Why should they go that route when they are in the process of upgrading their equipment for more channel space? After the upgrade, they will have plenty of room for more HD's. If their IPTV would work anything like VOD does now, then I will not look forward to it. VOD still has some problems. Why risk it? Why rush it? |

| i gotta agree with the two people above. whats the issue with keeping with the current solution in existing areas and in all new markets going all IPTV. the only big downside of this i can see is support and maintence, but since physical crews are in different cities you have a new market where you are training the crews fresh go IPTV. |

You need to have router capable of passing the data at the home site if all say...7 tvs are watching a different HD show thats 15.5mps(MPEG-2) x 7. Sure the odds are low but we see reports of 8-9 and 10 tv homes....
More typical is 2-3 tvs watching a HD stream at 15.5mbps per stream.
Now with MPEG-4 that gets cut by 30-50% so really you are back to decent hardware thats readily available off the shelf today. |

I always thought the "all-IPTV within three years" thing was fantasy. They have enough trouble with the IP-based VOD they've got.

i would love to see an mpeg4 based IPTV provider. i dont live in verizon land, but i would like to see more companies offer this. currently i have a 7 mb DSL, upgradable to 20, which should work fine for my single HDTV. |

They're also in no rush to provide local public access channels even though they collect municipal excise fees based upon percentage of the subscription fees; typically 2-5% extra in addition to the per month charge less any bundling discounts. At the time I had FIOS TV there was no municipal public access channel for my town.. so they offered only two others.. if it costs Verizon money to do something.. they'll stall doing it for as long as possible. There is very little incentive to subscribe to FIOS tv, IMO. The offering just isn't robust enough. |

No public access? I get the city council channel, the county commissioner channel, a local science channel, two PBS stations, a local Spanish language channel... the only thing FiOS doesn't give me that cable did is a 24-hour local news channel.
Not robust? All the nationals, all the locals, many in HD and with SD picture quality that looks better than the HD on BriteHouse.
I'm sorry you didn't like it, but I don't have a problem with FiOS.

From there one coax goes into the router and the other two go into motorola set top boxes. It's my understanding that HD VOD and informational services (widgets, guides, etc.) are delivered via ip done via MOCA which is the coaxial networking standard used by verizon. Both my set top boxes have ip addresses registered in the router.

BB & YMMV... acronyms to know.. Buyer beware & Your Mileage May Vary.. One thing is for sure, the FIOS experience is not homogeneous across the footprint. I say buyer beware because Verizon and many other companies really make it tough for you to cancel service once you subscribe to it. I had some billing issues and nonsense when I canceled.. so maybe Verizon is doing right by a certain segment of the FIOS customer base.. but I don't have enough information to say whether this is a majority or minority case.. but seeing as Verizon more closely monitors these forums; extremely negative comments seem to get swatted down more aggressively than in the past. Who knows what that means.. (Comcast & Cablevision are also known to troll for comments that seem to cost them customers) Fortunately, I tolerate no crap especially because I know what I'm talking about am not a newbie in all things telecom. Even though my screen name says my account is from 2004.. I've been on this forum when it was in its infancy around 1997. |

Actually those are PEG (without the "P") channels not public access. Public access channels are channels that have citizen produced content. On Comcast's public access channel (channel 80 here) there were actually many infomercials but also some citizen produced content. Some were good and some were bad but many were somewhat entertaining nonetheless. I actually liked the commercials (most were for products or services that were made by some small businesses) and were not of the quality of the more professional infomercials. I actually found many of them funny and laughed while they were on.
Here in Prince George's County Verizon does not have a public access channel.

| I get the difference, but the key word is "public." If a citizen wants to be on TV, they can go to the council meeting and complain about something on camera. As for the "Wayne's World" channels, we're lucky to NOT have that level of programming...
