Comments on news posted 2008-05-20 08:46:22: Netflix's broadband delivery system is nice idea, but until now, you were restricted to watching titles on your PC screen. I'm not sure about you, but watching movies at my desk is about as enjoyable as taking a bath in the kitchen sink. ..

Interesting...

We use Netflix and download movies sometimes. It works well on my Latitude D820. It would be even nicer using this set-top box.

Great idea.

A lot of good it would do

With capped services like mine. And those that aren't capped will certainly see themselves traffic shaped.

There is no doubt in my mind that recent traffic shaping efforts by providers like Cox and Comcast aren't about controlling piracy but about normalizing traffic shaping...getting that foot in the door.

What starts with the "evil pirates" will spread to competing services like iTunes, VoIP, Amazon Unbox and Netflix all under the guise of "reasonable network management".

Re: Interesting...

it's a great idea that will go nowhere. The available movies on their download service is ridiculous. And that is giving it credit.

It has possibilities...but not with the current selection.

We use Netflix more for my daughter, and they have a decent title selection for kids so far. When she is home sick and I am working downloading the movies can come in handy.

Tivo..

They need to team up with Tivo and offer the service that way like Amazon unbox.

Exactly what I was thinking...i have Tivo and Netflix, now if I could download my netflix to Tivo (current movies, not just the current downloadable ones), would save netflix a ton of postage, and I'd be hooked!

Just what the world needs, another low-def content delivery service. This will be like YouTube, except that the the running time will be longer.

I don't know where you get your movies, but a typical, well encoded 2 hour movie is about 1.3GB, and it looks just fine on an SD tv, and is acceptable on a HD tv. Sure, the 20 minute TV show in HD is about 1GB, but, again, the quality of a well ripped 720p TV show is virtually indistinguishable from the HD broadcast, and looks MUCH better than the same show on DVD. Of course, given that comcrap is going to limit you to 100GB/month, that means a HD movie (expect it to be about 6GB), will suck all your bandwidth after about 15 movies. Of course, if your willing to pay $15.00 (call it $9.00) for a DRM encumbered, expiring movie due to the overage charges, it will be great for you.

NONE of these plans will ever work until the US finally gets a sane (read: competitive) broadband policy.

Not everyone has an HD tv yet. And I can tell you use netflix, and already enjoy their high quality downloads.. Oh wait, you don't? What a surprise, a review, and an opinion without seeing or using the product..

how about some selection?

First, you need some better choices for what's available online to even make this idea halfway worthwhile.

Second, I don't care. Laptop works fine to pipe video to TV. Guess having a special box makes the people who like DRM happier.

If that's the case, I agree with other posts here - why not partner with Tivo and the cable companies to deliver a "Netflix Channel" with literally ANYTHING on demand???

Maybe someday there will be such a thing, but I won't hold my breath.

Rhapsody is close for music, even with constantly changing selection - movies online should have a similar deal. One should be able to pick out darn near anything and play it.

I created my own DVR/PVR using a older PC I am using software with a specially created plugin that accesses the Netflix site and allows me to watch it on my tv. It keeps the DRM active so that nothign is being done illegally

I refuse to watch most low-def programming anymore. The picture quality is awful... but that's more because of my cable provider then anything else.

I do have Comcast, so I am perfectly qualified to comment on the result of watching a video stream using their Internet service.

True, true. I am planning to make an investment in an upconverting DVD player in the near future so that the DVDs I do rent look somewhat watchable.

You're being generous.

I happen to think that if there were more bandwidth intensive applications, such as HD streaming, that might gin up demand for better broadband service in the USA. Of course, I seem to be one of the 5 people who actually watch HDTV on a regular basis.

lack of speed

Eh, with the current broadband database being limited to people that live in city's and on top of video stores, this doesn't excite me. Anytime those of us that live just on the outskirts get a possible good wireless option it gets FAPed and well, services like this will eat up the 5 gig cap (( read sprints 5 gig cap article ))..

Until some real broadband deployment happens, service's like these will only be available to people that aready have tons of entertainment options, so .. So, its like trying to sell firewood to someone that lives in a "rural" area...

Btw yes this feature is free with subscription.. For now, but once they get a larger amount of people downloading, there will be a sudden "emergency" reason that they have to put a small fee and then milk it from there.. Probably will have something to do with Data throughput cost recovery, or the dreaded RIAA or that one for movies MPAA ? One of them will appear and screw it up, as they always do..

@fujitsu.com

hahaha

You people honestly think that the major ISP's (cable providers in particular) will allow you to use their cheap bandwidth to stream VIDEO content to your TV's?

It would not make any since for TWC or COMCAST to allow you to pay someone $8.95/month for access to 10000 movies (VOD Services) that they already charge you $3.95/each for.

No, this is a not a technology that will last, since you need to have 28Mbps downstream to maintain an HD stream. Look at this math to prove the HD point, this is for a 25GB Blueray type film, over 2 hours.

((25 GB) / (2 hours)) to Mbps = 28.4444444 Mbps Google

I dont know any ISP's that give you anything close to that speed, espically one that can maintain that for 2 hours.

THE CABLE TV INDUSTRY WILL NOT ALLOW THIS TO EXIST ON THEIR LINES!!! WATCH WHAT I SAY!
