| Where will it end? You expect the WWW when you PAY for internet access. You also expect other perks like FTP (21) SMTP (25) and usenet (119). All this is going to do is give a big boost to independent companies like DSLExtreme.com If the large ISPs don't give what consumers want, they'll be plenty of smaller ISPs that will. The big companies will lose money as people begin to rely on smaller ISPs who aren't concerned about policing their systems. | |

1 edit | Re: well then I have AT@T and they still haven't shut down the Bellsouth newsserver yet which has 8 days retention and excellent completion rates and I can max out my connection as far as DL speed. Other than a.b.bonless, I can't think of any group that its missing that I care about. I'm able to download any movie or game that you suckers paying for Giganews and the like can download. If what I'm looking for has expired of the server, no big deal, theres always Bit Torrent. 8 days is pretty damned good for an ISP newsserver.
But keep this under your hat. Maybe they just forgot about the newsserver in the chaos of the merger. Ok probably not.

| TW, Verizon, Sprint - all ending usenet access You guys should read »news.cnet.com/8301-13578_3-99648···efd.lede
I've been using usenet since 1988 when taking a High School computer programming class.
Most people use newsgroups for access to so-called "pirated" material, including TV shows (gasp! the VCR must be illegal too), fonts, movies, etc...
When calling my TW Road Runner rep to complain - guess what - she had never even heard of usenet. ISP tech support rep that has NEVER heard of usenet? Wow. Nuts. Anyhow she says TW will be shutting down usenet access on 23 June 2008.
Looks like torrents for me from now on.

| A little kiss would be nice before the ******g
As a TWC customer, they still have made no contact with me to let me know their intentions.
Child Porn is the pretense, but look how successful it will be in limiting access to other legal sharing of ideas?
But my guess TWC and the ilk will be back in, but this time newsgroups will be a package option.

@rr.com | Re: A little kiss would be nice before the ******g Look again, there were no official warning to users, but there are no more active feeds to their servers as of today.
Today newsgroups... tomorrow ftp?
More money for the Corporation, thats all

| Re: Time to move on, I guess... :( Giganews and PowerUsenet both offer good service but are a bit on the expensive side since you only need 100 days binary retention.
I would suggest looking at Newsdemon and NewsgroupDirect. Both offer secure, unlimited accounts with around 115 days binary retention.
»www.newsgroupreviews.com has 20% off coupon codes for both services and a number of free Usenet trials.
