They already exist.
I believe existing 2G iPhone plans do not yet have at&t's traditional 5GB cap, though? That may very well change with 3G, but then again, at&t has in the past given up a lot of concessions to Apple. |

They still have a 5GB cap. New iPhone users just reach the cap sooner.
EDIT - Since some are confused, my point is I don't see how you can get to 5GB without tethering and AT&T doesn't offer unlimited BW and tethering, at least that I've seen. $20 unlimited has always been there as an EDGE only service. I'm unaware of any AT&T 3G plan that is unlimited data. From EVERYTHING I've seen all 3G AT&T services are part of a dataconnect plan. If they don't permit tethering, 3G use with the iPhone is going to be limited ot the same youtube, browsing, email crap...not enough traffic to be an issue. |

Compared to how many for EV-DO 3G?
Apple could have made a CDMA iPhone, RIMM somehow manages to support both GSM and CDMA. |

| Finally Catching Up To The Rest
So AT&T is finally catching up to the rest of the world. 3G data/voice networks exist almost everywhere else in the world (and have for a while).
Not to knock the iPhone, but most of the capabilities of it have been available from Nokia, Samsung, HTC, Sony Ericsson, and others for two years now.
T better realize that people actually want to use the features of the phone/handheld but will balk at limitations (cost, speed, crippling, etc). Will their network hold?? Probably, but they'll end up charging users in overage fees and then you'll start seeing plenty of complaints about how someone has spent $400+ on a phone that they can't use because it is too expensive.
In this part of the world, ~$50 gets you "all-you-can-eat" of 3G. No caps. My laptop is tethered all the time and 3G is my source of the interwebs. Why can't it be like this Stateside?? -- Thanks for reading! |

Perfect timing for ATT's 3G upgrades!
Supposedly there was some sort of June deadline for 3G upgrades on ATT's network??? Can anyone confirm this?
I finally got 3G service at my house about 2 weeks ago. Until then, I only had Edge.
Coincidentally... about 2 miles down the road, there has been 3G service for at least 1 year.
I may purchase a 3G iPhone... -- QUAD!!!! |

| Backhaul from cell towers the chokepoint
Getting the data from the cell towers to the internet is where quickly growing 3G use will break the system. »gigaom.com/2008/06/08/3g-network-iphone/
Most of the problem, if any, will crop up at the backhaul level. At present, the current 3G networks have a backhaul capacity of between 10-to-15 megabits per second, which is enough for the very short term, but it could become a big issue as more and more 3G iPhones and other new 3G phones go online. Bandwidth at the back end is going to start getting choked.
It’s already happening in Europe, where carriers are scrambling to add backhaul connections of either the microwave or the Ethernet kind to meet the growing bandwidth demand from 3G handsets. John Roese, CTO of Nortel, would describe it as the side effect of hyperconnectivity. And as AT&T has to beef up the backhaul, that is when issues about cost and caps will come in to play. Now, AT&T is beefing that up - but will it be enough to avoid a crunch in many areas - especially in suburban and rural areas? -- My BLOG .. .. Internet News .. .. My Web Page |

| Short answer: They shouldn't have to
Enough already! I don't know why AT&T ever agreed to such a lop-sided deal in the first place. Apple has downright abused AT&T with this phone. From the cost for AT&T to manage a phone like this to the monthly extortion payments, it's been a bad deal for AT&T.
The best thing AT&T could do is let Apple sell this phone to other providers. |

Guess you missed this part said by AT&T iPhone agreement : Except as may otherwise be specifically permitted or prohibited for select data plans, data sessions may be conducted only for the following purposes: (i) Internet browsing; (ii) email; and (iii) intranet access (including access to corporate intranets, email, and individual productivity applications like customer relationship management, sales force, and field service automation
How the hell are you going to get to 5GB on an iPhone without tethering? What devices does AT&T allow tethering that aren't subject to their regular dataconnect plans like my 875U is? I've read rumors about a separate AT&T iPhone tethering plan but haven't seen any details and whether or not it will have caps or not. Given every other bit of AT&T hardware, a tethering plan would be a dataconnect plan.
Also the $20 has ALWAYS been there for unlimited EDGE speed. 3G on the otherhand has always been tied to a data connect plan. |

2 edits | Given no memory stick, and iPhone capacity currently being 16GB, possibly 32GB, not "too" big. We also don't know if download store purchases would count against bandwith or if there are apps that won't be downloadable directly from an iPhone software store (meaning larger apps having to be installed through iTunes). I'm avoiding any WWDC notes so I can watch the video tonight and be awed. |
