What???

People would pay 175 bucks to use a program you could get on this site for free?

Not me!

»/drtcp is all I need to get my speed up to spec and keep it there. 8.88/2200 constantly.

Yeah, but then the 175 pounds is basically the fee for the tech to come out and do all that crap.

Cable & DSL have different strengths

DSL works really well in heavily urban areas where the CO's are close together and distance to customers are short. But it doesn't work well in suburban areas were distance runs are long - then speeds suffer for many of their users. And while remote terminals can be used to improve things, the distances can still be long.

Cable can be just the opposite. In heavily built up areas, cable nodes are often oversubscribed and when prime time hits speeds can slow down for everyone. But in suburban areas where nodes are often sparsely populated full speeds are often maintained all the time.

So it wasn't surprising to see the UK study numbers showing rural areas getting lower DSL speeds.
A survey earlier this month suggested people living in the country were suffering from an average speed of just 2.3Mbps, compared to 4.5Mbps in London.

If BT can do it...

More power to them... That's no different than Geek Squad charging $129 to come to your house and add a device to your existing wireless network.

1. Turn on laptop
2. Select SSID
3. Input WEP/WPA key
4. Cash in

Wow, BT surely has some nerve to pull this out of greed to dupe some poor idiots when it can be done for no charge here.

This kind of stuff has been around for ever.
Use to be big business selling tweak programs for dial up. They didn't do anything you can't.

Pounds v Dollars

I see some people posting the price as $175, but we are talking about 175 British Pounds, or roughly $340 in US dollars. That seems like a pretty serious rip-off to me.

No. Did you even read the article you silly sally?

It says £90. Not £175. So yes, its only $175 American.

To convert the currency is also not accurate since people there get paid in pounds, not dollars.

Re: What???

Yeah, they must really have some nerve to charge to come out and do something that the end-user want but is not willing or able to do themselves.

Seriously, though, I'm no fan of telecoms in general, but 9 out of 10 end-users couldn't/wouldn't do this stuff themselves, so I see no problem in someone coming out to do it for them.

80% of the stuff IT techs do is stuff that the end-user could do themselves if they had the interest/knowledge/desire to do so. Fact is, most end-users don't want to sit down and page through tons of posts by geeks speaking in a language they don't understand, they just want their stuff to go faster.

Yes, but we're not paying the crazy taxes that they pay over there, either.

exactly right. this would be closer to paying $90 for someone there then it would be to $175
