Comments on news posted 2008-06-17 11:33:15: Last week I noted that for the first time ever, Verizon would be competing directly with AT&T by deploying FiOS into a portion of Texas already wired with U-Verse. The Dallas Morning News has more detail. ..

Thats the way it should be. It what made capitalism better than communism. Competition is a way forward to expansion and growth.

Ofcourse

Of course it's logical to crush your competitors with a GOOD service.

Even at matching price points I think it's a better value to go with FiOS rather than U-Crap.

Verizon already in area; don't see Verizon moving in ...

... where they don't already have a presence.

Some may think that this is an indication that Verizon may try to take Fios national and become a major overbuilder around the country. I just don't see that happening.

Verizon was already in the DFW area.
quote:
Verizon will extend its fiber-optic lines into neighborhoods covered by AT&T in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, a region the two companies share, Verizon said Monday. The company said it might do the same in other parts of the United States.
In areas where they already have a major presence, they may try and expand within the area. But in cities where they aren't doing landline business already, I don't see them moving in on other incumbents.

awesome

i live in a verizon black hole in my town. 2 frontier CO's surrounded 360 degrees by verizon territory. this is a good sign they may just build over the whole area.

They are Welcome Here

I hope they come into the Qwest controlled markets (Denver, Boise and other cities).

Qwest needs a good kick in butt. They don't want to do anything to upgrade their network and if they had their way I'm sure it would stay that way for another 20 years.

Frisco Resident

I live in Frisco and it is currently split 1/2 verizon 1/2 at&t. I live on the at&t side unfortunately and they just rolled the sub-par u-verse by my door. Had guys going door-to-door to recruit for weeks and all I had to do was convince them that I actually "understand" how inferior "advanced" offering was and they left me alone. I will be the first verizon sub on the block if verizon brings fios to my door and I imagine many would follow.

WOW!

This is great news! It’s nice to see the phone companies respond to marketing demand. I don’t have a landline; don’t need one. I do, however, have a cell phone and broadband. I’m calling today!!

VZ is also in the LA area around Long Beach and a couple smaller areas. I could see them cherry picking some of the higher end suburbs or apt complexes around there. I dont think it would be much of a reach for them.

one way attack

AT&T can't really fight back by deploying in VZ territory. or at least it will be much more difficult due to the technology disadvantage...

Maybe, if we are lucky, Verizon will just buy Qwest...probably just wishful thinking.

They weren't sharing the same cities however. Much like Cox and Time Warner share DFW, and Comcast and TWC share Kansas City, ATT and Verizon share the metroplex along county and city lines.

In other words, Verizon is in fact going into areas where it had no actual presence, and is laying new lines down in ATT areas which it previously had no access to, and provided no services in.

Cherry Picking

Its discrimination on the part of these LEC's

Going after populated areas to make the most $.

and not even building a carrier class network on top of it.

Re: Frisco Resident

I am a Frisco resident, too. I can't wait for this to happen. An internet article I've found claimed that the building permits for Allen are already in process, and that service should be active within 12 months.

No word on whether Frisco and north Plano will be on the same schedule or not.

Re: Cherry Picking

Because a private company should lose money wiring 1 or 2 areas in the boonies.
