Thats only if you pay the $300 upfront fee, otherwise it's $209.99! Most people would call it highway robbery.

I think the 500Mb daily cap would be the bigger issue for me though. Back when I had DirecWay, they advertised speeds up to 1800 down, which is/was fast enough for general web browsing. But I couldn't download a windows service pack without exceeding the daily limits.

Yep, hell even some games in today's world, just UPDATES exceed that!

It would be better, better uploads, better SLA, no caps on download limits, etc..

You're right. A full T1 is around $300 to $350, and you get an SLA too.

These guys are nuts.

Very, very true. I just downloaded almost 3 gigs from the Xbox LIVE Marketplace yesterday.

I'll stick with my 8/2 Comcast connection for $43/month.

Good luck getting that rate out in the middle of BFE. Thats where all these people are getting satellite in the first place. They aren't in the city. They are out in the sticks. Getting a T1 run all the way out there is almost double that rate depending on how far outside the city you are.

That's the key thing- HughesNet isn't trying to steal customers from Verizon, Comcast, TWC, or at&t, they're going for customers who have no other option except for dialup (and sometimes not even that)... That's what lets them get away with such huge costs. (Plus, running a satellite operation isn't cheap)

Uhh, double? Try $1000-$1500 a month and that isn't even out in the middle of nowhere...

OTOH sub-100 kbps uploads from WildBlue are sooo lame. Oh, and 1.3 second pings to anywhere. Plus, WildBlue's website isn't even hosted on their own network :/

It just depends. I've got a remote site which could be classified as BFE and the cost for a full T1 is under $400 a month. Obviously this varies wildly.

500 MB a day = 14.65 GB a month. And people complain about possible 250 GB caps from cable

actually geo synch orbit is 1/8 of a sec.

speed of light 186,282 mps geo synch orbit 22,500 miles 1/8 of 186,282 = 23,285. 22,500 is pretty close to 23,285

true but thats as the laser goes
1/4 of a sec from base to your home not counting time it takes A. processing on the ground be for broadcast and B.Processing that the bird has to do
1/2 sec and 1/2 down is more of just a good number to live by

 This would be awesome if...

the 2.0 Meg was $89.99 a month and the 3.0 Meg was $99.99 a month, and had the same caps.

As it stands, that's way too expensive, though I have no doubt that there will be some wealthy individuals out in the country who will get the 3 meg plan just because it's faster and has a larger cap....heh, if I was a multi-millionaire, I may do it.

I would have liked to see the 3 meg package have something like 400-500 kilobits down and a 600-700 MB daily cap though.

interesting step and advance, but it's just too expensive as it stands.
