Gogo will not enable any voice-based functions. And the system will prioritize the flow of data so that passengers downloading movies or large documents won't prevent other passengers from getting their e-mail. Glad they are restricting voice traffic.
I'll bet their lowering priority of streaming video traffic will cause some complaints though.
And the 2 mbps figure per customer is VERY optimistic since the plane can only do 3 mbps total for all customers. If more than a couple people use the service, the claimed speed of 2 mbps per customer will not be possible(even with their claimed compression technology).

I wonder if it will have caps as well. All the airlines are nickel and dimeing us to death already. Imagine a $5 overage for each 10MB over a very small cap to begin with.
I know there are workaholics that are chomping at the bit for this but I would think most business travelers find the flight as a refuge from the boss and the rest of the world. |

If so, then isn't 3.0 per subscriber (which would really be the airplane) exceedingly optimistic??
Will be interesting to see how the handoffs between towers are handled.
Does anyone know if these are simply cell antennas mounted facing upward? |

The technology being used for radio transmissions is a customized version of Qualcomm’s EV-DO Rev A technology. Blumenstein said that they can migrate to Rev B or LTE if and when those higher-speed technologies become available. The base stations for the system come from ZTE Corp., the Chinese telecom hardware vendor that is desperately trying to make a name for itself in the U.S. market. Aircell is using technology developed by Meru Networks to ensure that the on-board systems don’t run into capacity issues and all passengers can connect with the on-board 802.11 routers.
Aircell expects to deploy about 500 antennas, enough to cover the entire country and support as many as 250,000 broadband users. --

This service is geared towards Business customers. Not everyone will be willing to pay $12.95 to go online. I doubt Caps will be a consideration.
Also, Airlines are in business to make money, not loose money like any other company. They aren't nickel and dimeing anyone. Most airlines are just "breaking even" if you really think about it.
Picture this A320-200 Fuel capacity 6,300 Gallons / (JetA $8.22) with a capacity of 156 people on board (seat configuration can change this#)
Fully loaded 6300 X 8.22(JFK price) = 51,786 / 156 Pass = $331.96 a head... This is excluding Crew + Snacks + etc.
So don't be shocked when an airline cancels a flight because there are only 50 people onboard.

And I bet the useless 10000 feet restriction exists. If a cellphone can bring down a plane, perhaps the terrorists need to stop buying SAM missles and simple take an cellphone with analog on it. That baby is like an EMP bomb. |

| Not the case. You don't want people making cell phone calls while the flight crew is shooting a Cat IIIB ILS approach. Not to confuse the issue, but technically speaking, there are soooo many variables that its a much more prudent decision to maintain an altitude restriction. Much more. I don't think people yapping on their phones is worth more than a safe approach/landing. |

so let's see here... the last thing I need is a 747 in the same air space I'm flying my little single engine cessna 172... oh wait better yet, flying VFR in the middle of now where with no flight following service, so I don't have someone saying skyhawk traffic at 270 2 miles out.
Not a good idea... Leave the big boys at 20k+ feet. |

Even if they got to 3 Mb/s per plane, that's just not enough. Sure, it'll do text email, but that's about it. You want to watch a video, even YouTube?: fuhgetaboutit.
I remember some news a while back about Harris working on a system with a California company to do about 30 Mb/s per plane. That sounds much cooler... |
