Re: ...

Betting Pool:

1 to 2 odds we don't even see 10mbit symmetrical in the U.S. by 2012 in more than 10 percent of American homes.

1 to 50 odds we actually see download speeds of 50mbit by 2012 but upload speeds of about 5 mbit in say 20 percent of homes.

Incalculable odds we see 100mbit in homes by 2012.

Since we're apt to toss out numbers, I got 100 percent odds that lobbyists will be keen to throw around their weight in order to prevent any real broadband development or improvements. All the while, ISPS go backwards in contrast to the world, and install more strict caps.

What the US absolutely must have by 2012 is universal health care. I'd willingly go back to dial-up if every resident of this country got health-care as a result.

Sure, having a decent broadband infrastructure would help competitiveness, but that boat sailed a long time ago when we shipped our factories to China and our software development to India and imported Mexicans to make our fast food and cut our grass. 100Mbps won't fix that.

We need 100mbps, better health care, electric cars, bridges rebuilt, hospitals built, rebuilt school systems. If only the US would stop wasting so much money on stupid things.

It will never happen. Issawi's Law of Conservation of Evil states: "The total amount of evil in any system remains constant. Hence, any diminution in one direction - for instance, a reduction in poverty or unemployment - is accompanied by an increase in another, e.g. crime or air pollution."

Therefore, you can never remove all the waste or inefficiency because it will only pop up in some other form. Also, as an immutable law of the Universe, it cannot be changed.

I believe the current administration has caused this law to become out of whack and that the supply of evil has increased substantially. This implies that we are due for an uptick in good to bring the supply of evil back to it's original balance.

that being said, it ain't gonna happen with broadband, because the government of this country just doesn't seem to give a sh1t if we have fast, inexpensive, widely deployed broadband or not.

its not the Feds that screw Public School Systems. It's the states that won't turn the money over to them. I went to two school districts in HS. One received only State money. One received Federal Money. Want to know which one was more maintained? the Federally Funded. Buildings that were always being remodeled to be more Eco-Friendly today, computer systems that were always being updated, school buses that weren't broken down all the time, bus drivers that were paid like they should have been, Text books that were new every 3 years (like they should be). and smaller class sizes. The most I had one one class at the Fed. Funded school was 23. The Public State funded the most was 35. BIG difference in terms of weather or not you had a text book that day with all the pages still there or one that was missing half of the chapter, or a Xerox copy.

The US already has universal health care. You get hurt or sick anywhere in the country you can go to a doctor ANYWHERE. What YOU want is for the government (ie ME) to pay for your health care.

That's not true and you know it.

As far as YOU paying for it . Leet me ask yo is peoel wthout health get sick and don't go to the doctor and misses work and that hurts the economy that's going to cost you a lot more. If they end up so bad the end up in the ER sure then you'll pay REAL big for their health care. $50 doctor visit or $500 ER visit you're paying for one or the other, CHOOSE.

that's not the same as walking into ANY doctors office you want which the poster alludes to. HUGE difference.

Oh and by the way since WE, the taxpayers do pay for the ER visit wouldn't it be cheaper just to pay for the guy to go to a regular doctor? Probably 1/10 the cost.

BS. In 1994 I had a car wreck was in the hospital for a week had surgery on my leg and the entire bill was 16 grand which included the ambulance service.

Three year ago my son cuts open the bottom of his foot on some broken glass. ER visit which included stiches and return visit 2 weeks later totaled $700. Where in the fuck do you get $5000 grand for "minor" stuff?

Only if you have insurance coverage. Otherwise, you go to a county hospital and let the rest of us pick up the tab for you. At least here in New York, if you do not pay taxes, you are under 18 or over 65 you get Universal Health Care. Those of us who do not fall into those categories, pay for it.

get a clue dude, who do you think pays the bill when someone without health insurance or the ability to pay walks into an emergency room? [note: I assume you are talking about emergency room care, because this is the repuglican talking point and you sure as hell ain't gonna get to see a private physician with no health insurance and no means to pay].

they may write some of the cost off, but the rest of it goes into making YOUR health care cost more.

The US does NOT need 'universal health care' what the health care system needs is a series of laws past and enforce that put the doctors in charge of the patient's health and not the health insurance companies. universal health care is another way to improving the health care of people, but not the only way. who know, maybe what i'm proposing would morph into a for of universal health care.

Re: No

Cornelius you are so crazy. Doctors make you wait like a beggar dog in double waiting rooms, because of no compition and total power over you.

We need to put the PATIENTS IN CHARGE not the Doctors - already Doctors are in charge like you are a little baby who needs them to write and order treatments for you.

As an adult I should decide what Meds and what treatment and tests I need.

A doctor told this model friend of mine to get a Colonoscopy for Ulcerative Colits, she refused, and the doctor dumped her, told her to get out of the office for refusing medical advice.

BTW the Doctor runs the Colonoscopy facility, and will make allot of Insurance money doing the coloscopy. So my friend knows what she needs for body and health, not some stupid Doctor.

USA really spoils the doctors, makes them behave exactly like Cops! Both proffetions are unique in ability to talk down at you and you have to take it, the Cop will put you in Jail if you look at him wrong or if he doesn't like your religion etc... Well A DOCTOR will mess up your operation or screw up your health if he feels you did not praise him enough or because you are wrong ethinicity... We can advocaate for our Cars health to a mechanic, but we can never advocate for our own body with a doctor without the doctor getting reven for irritating him with too many inteligent questions. MD's do not like smart patients as they make the MD work too hard, a dumb patient the love, as dumb patients will think the Doctor is GOD even as the Doctor is screwing up.

So, you want the government to do to health care what it did to retirement (bankrupted Social Security by abusing it and using the money for everything not related to social security/retirement) and education (churning out uneducated folks by giving them passing grades so their feelings don't get hurt)?

Every time government tries to run something, it bloats the cost and usually corrupts it so bad, the system fails miserably, at which point the politicians' only "solution" is to throw more money at it. Repeat cycle.

Actually, social security is a VERY efficient system. The funding problems are due to successive administrations raiding the trust fund for budget shortfalls.

...and until NCLB, the feds had very little to do with local schools besides providing some funding in some cases. ...and some other related benefits like funding for the school lunch program etc.

Universal health care is a joke. Look at every country that has implemented it and compare their system with our current system. I would rather see 100Mbs broadband speeds and deal with what is sometimes a hassle in terms of health care than have to wait a month to see a doctor that I don't even get to choose.

I agree with this part. Mainly is what good is a 100Mbps connection for $40/month if you are not going to live long enough to enjoy it, or are denied a life saving surgery.

I would go back to dial up as well. Ironically it's not too slow now a days. I have had some wireless AP's I have connected to that were slower than a dial up equivalent.

It did NOT include the government taking care of people with health care. This is what the private sector is for.

Get it straight, the federal governments job is NOT, I repeat, is NOT to take care of you from the cradle to the grave. When the liberals take office, and your paycheck gets slashed by another 20-30%, you WILL complain becuse your universal health care won't do a GD thing for you. So you can use your new 100Mbs speeds for about an hour a month. Seems about right to me.

As for 1Gbs in 2015, no amount of powerboost, SDV or DOCSIS 3.0 will accomplish that. You'd need an Internet 2 connection.

In other news...

Another recent report "insists" that I must have a 10,000 square foot house, and a 500% raise by 2012 in order to "stay competitive" in the US workforce. Furthermore, it also "insists" that I must have at least 3 luxury vehicles at my disposal at all times.

Seriously, all these "reports" that come out are a bunch of nonsense. Consumer broadband speeds have nothing to do with anything. The reality is that for businesses, both 100Mbps and GigE speeds are available in most urban or developed areas today. Given that business is what drives the economy, perhaps the report should have been more focused on that. Now I wont argue that business grade 100Mbps (+) connections are cheap ($1000 to $6000 per month), but that cost will surely come down in the next 4 years.

As for consumer connections, I can also argue that this report is baseless. With DOCIS 3.0 rollouts happening as we speak, 100Mbps will be available to large numbers of customers within the next 4 years. There will clearly be large rural areas that will struggle to be served by anything other than dialup, but thats a technical limitation that cant be rectified.

The bottom line is that these "doom and gloom" reports do nothing but stir up the malcontents on this website. The people who really need high capacity connections in the next 4 years will either have them, or they will move to where they are available (assuming that its so necessary for them).

I agree that houses with multiple devices make good use of high-speed connections, but it brings up a problem with many of the speedtest-based ways of condemning American broadband... If a bunch of people are using a 20/5 FiOS connection, that may show up on a speedtest as a bunch of 5/2 or whatever, while in reality they're actually making a good use of a high-speed connection.

100 meters.
Just what I was going to say. Exactly right, and it takes 2 pairs. We all knew that.

K-Street Mafia will do anything to stop national broadband.

Club Gov's K-Street Mafia won't do anything for the average citizen. I hate to repeat myself but I am sure that it costs a fraction per mile to install fiber along a road when compared to the cost of building the road. If there were a discussion by our government about creating a fiber infrastructure the lobbyists for the broadband cartel would do whatever they needed to, to prevent the construction of the network. With the exception of Verizon the current Telecom and CATV ISP's are satisfactory with no new wires and mediocre service. Remember when the government attempted to create the Tennessee Valley Authority to deliver electricity to rural America, the commercial power industry fought T.V.A.'s creation tooth and nail. If it was not for Franklin Delano Roosevelt, most farmers would still be lighting their homes with Kerosene Lamps.

I haven't priced it recently, but if Kerosene is an oil based product (as I think it is) just imagine the cost to light your home enough to cook and read ($3 / gallon ?)!

I'll gladly settle for 10Mbps, symmetric

All I need is 10Mbps, at most 50Mbps, symmetric... Anything more than that would be overkill, since I don't plan on watching multiple streams of HD in real-time over IP. I'd rather just be able to download them to a video server and watch them later.

keep dreaming

instead of spending more money on reports that talk about the same thing of how crappy US broadband is compared (a 'apples to oranges' comparison type=>somewhat flawed) to the rest of the world. why not figure out how to accomplish the goal by figuring out if it would be possible for the government to do all the work (which i think would result in a multi-trillion dollar blunder) or how to entice companies to do the wiring. i'd like to see how a partial reimbursement from the government (only after deployment) would work. it'll lessen the likeliness that the government is the one to get screwed.

It seems to me the idea is sound...

A country with second rate infrastructure will ultimately become a second rate economy. America's infrastructure development in the last century was central to its being an economic powerhouse. That is what everything else is built on.

We are a post-industrial information economy. Communications infrastructure is as central to an information economy as transportation infrastructure was to the industrial economy.

We're already not competitive.

For the past 3 decades, we've allowed the politicians to cater to the multi-national corporations and allow the majority of our manufacturing capability to be moved offshore (along with the jobs). Not the smartest move with respect to national security. About the only thing we do produce is food; however, I worry about our over dependence on technology and the price we may ultimately pay for over use of our lands. The topsoil in all most every area is very thin--we're talking only a few inches. The Internet will not revive the American economy. We're on the slippery slope of decline when 70% of our GDP is consumer spending. Good paying jobs are the only answer to our declining world status, which means re-establishing a manufacturing base in this country. However, that means standing up to the multi-national corporations and undoing the tax breaks and laws that allow them to import foreign-made goods with little or no tariffs.

concur

Some of us in rural areas still have no dsl, we can't begin to imagine some of the speeds others have had for years. If EMBARQ was the next door neighbor i would walk over there and kick him in the groan!!!
But seriously if you think about it the problem becomes pretty clear. It's simply the way people do business in this country. HONESTY? PRIDE? RESPECT? What's that? Nowadays the typical business meeting in this country will consist mainly how to rip-off the american public(think ENRON). The solution? Import some guys and gals from the japanese to replace these jokers!

and 3.2.1.........

Absolute Bull

We don't need 100Mbps.

We need cheap energy, cheap fuel, and low taxes to attract and create jobs.

The drive to 100Mbps-everywhere is just another loony idea to create yet another tax system, which will only lead to our downfall.

Re: Absolute Bull

We still need a 100Mbits or 1Gbits to catch up with a foreign world broadband markets cuz U.S.A. is falling so far away from having top of broadband rank if U.S.A. don't do it to make up then I'll be leave America for japan to get a 100Mbits so cheaper cuz japan island is small I could afford ¥6,000 to ¥6,500 for 100Mbits connection.
