On the positive side; Rigas Sr will still die in prison

Even with the reduction in sentence, the odds are still good that Rigas Sr will still die in prison. And his son will still spend the majority of the prime of his life in prison as well.

Perhaps the reduction in sentences will create more room for more of their type. Buffalo views them as mere POS (and thats not Point of Sale)

This was a federal case right? In case you didn't know, the most you can reduce your time in federal cases is about 10%. That means maybe an extra 1.2 years reduction for dad and 1.7 years for sonny boy.

That's odd, because 15-3=13 and 3/15!=0.1

He's talking about parole. The appeals court reduction was for charges that were thrown out, and the appellate court could have tossed their entire sentence... but not likely.

I have mixed feelings about this. I agree that the Senior Rigas will die in prison and that is a shame.

Well Hobes he did the crime and gets the time. Several small suppliers locally where I used to live also filed bk because of him and it ruined their lives. So there is not much sympathy for him.

From investments? Or unpaid debt from Adelphia to them?

Why is it a shame? Just because he was an old man when he committed the crimes doesn't me he should be treated any differently than if he was 20 years old. Like the other guy said, don't do the crime if you can't do the time.

Its a shame because I happened to know John personally.

It's a shame because what does putting an 83 year old man in prison accomplish? It would have been more fitting to simply confiscate all of his personal/family assets and leave him penniless, but free. Now YOUR tax dollars are being used to keep an 83 year old man behind bars.

Also have you ever visited someone in a low security prison similar to the one John is housed in at Butner? I have and I'll tell you right now while it's no vacation it's certainly nothing like any prison you may be thinking of.

So now tell me, what does it accomplish keeping him behind bars? I assure you it's not "justice".

I'm pro locking up criminals for rehabilitation, i'm pro death penalty, but I will never agree with a punishment that serves no justice other then to please the public.

Because it is a "punishment"/"penalty"/"revenge" or whatever you want to call it. Without punishing those who do damage to others, then people will then take the law in to their own hands.

So what is preferable? Locking him up or have those he harmed take revenge by shooting his sorry ass. For society, punishment serves a valid purpose - it stops people from taking revenge personally.

Hopefully it deters some other old crook from ruining a bunch of people's lives thinking he'll walk because of his age.

So instead of getting out at age 98, he'll get out at 95? Outrage!

I agree with you. And I can't say I feel bad for him or his son. There are two things that upset me about this.

First, it is a waste of court time to reduce an 83 year old man's sentence by three years. What's the point, since in all likelihood he WILL die in prison?

Second, his son deserves the time he got.

What this family did was bankrupt a town and destroyed the financial well-being of thousands of hard-working and decent people. And why? So they could upgrade their personal jet? They are the scum of earth and should commit suicide on their own so that nobody has to pay for their rotten lives any longer. It's a good thing I am not God.

Yes those are federal prisoners and they could walk out at any time.

Re: RE

That picture doesn't really do justice to the campus. It is REALLY nice, but i took that from the road as i was driving away. They wouldn't let us take pics on the tour. They have a program where inmate can become certified master gardners and that's why the grounds a re so nice. THey also have a good tennis program from what i've heard.

BTW they also pay for you to go to college if you want, while i have to take out student loans... they also get free personal care items like shampoo ect.

The state pen we went to they have to pay for college themselves and they have to buy their own personal care items.

Federal is the way to go for sure.

BTW something like 88% of the people in the federal prison were there for drug charges. So basically, sell drugs and party, then get a free ride through college while living in luxury.

yeah looks much better than maximum secuity, but let me ask you this, would you trade your FREEDOM and spend 20 years there? A prison no matter how nice is still a prison.

True, but the point is prisoners shouldn't be living in accommodations like that just because they committed white collar crime. They should be in the same "pound me in the ass" prisons that everyone else ends up in.

Why? What would it accomplish? Why not simply confiscate all of the criminals possessions leaving them penniless, atleast that would be more fitting.

Otherwise, you explain to me with one clear rational thought what putting a white collar criminal in with murderers and rapists accomplishes.

Leave them penniless? Then we'd be supporting them via welfare, etc.

I will not exactly call it freedom just because you may be able to move about when you want, when in reality you are subjet to law enforcement intervention for no reason whatsoever and have to be looking over your shoulder all the time.

The lesson to be learned here is that if you are going to steal, steal millions. If you steal something small like a car, you'll wind up in a prison with fewer amenities.

better make it bigger than a car tho...that barely gets you enough time for a vacation break around here. They finally locked up a car thief for 5 years i think it was......after 25 various arrests/convictions

Maybe if the car you steal has a quarter ounce of weed in the glove box.....

Meh, they still got some real time at least even if it ain't much of a real prison.

Many of the residents still love him!

Believe it or not, Rigas is still loved in his old stomping grounds in Potter County, PA by a lot of people. They blame his accountants and workers for his crimes. Although he cost them their jobs, their homes and their futures, the people say John did no wrong.

Naivete is the rule in that rural area of Pennsyltucky where there are 18,000 people and 1,000,000 deer. From wikipedia, "Potter County was formerly home to the compound of the Aryan Nations, who established themselves here in 2002 after losing their compound in Hayden Lake, Idaho."

The residents don't use names for the months of the year but rather use the terms "First day of buck, First day of doe, First day of Bear, First day of trout" .......etc.

Save your flames Hob, I lived in Wharton and Roulette.

There may have been 3 in the trailer but there were at least 20 at one of their last meetings. The leader, August Kreiss, was selling Chinese SKS rifles (similar in style to the Ak-47) to the locals. AFAIK, he decided to move when he found out there was a black kid in the school his child attended and he was outraged that the school district allowed it to happen. The idiot thought that the county would stand by him. Foolish man moved to NY state and then South Carolina.

hmm

They are both thieves, both deserve to rot in prison and I contend they will continue to do so until they receive parole or finish their sentences.

The fallacy that the father is too old to be in prison is an appeal to pity.

It also is another fallacy when saying 'people like him'.

Being old and no matter how many people like you doesn't change the fact. A criminal is a criminal is a criminal.

Any way you spin it.
