Let's All Declare Our Independance from GOOGLE!

As many of us here either know as a fact, or somehow sensee:

    •Stored data is a asset of value.
    •Cross-referenced data is a powerful asset; it's value is usually several times more vaulable than the sum of its sources.
    •Asses who posses too much power, always become corrupt tyrants, if not already.


With sites like their search engine, MySpace, Gmail, and Google Apps, among others, they can direcly observe any darn mouse-click they please. Google Ads, Maps, AdSense, their flash-based video player, and other products of theirs placed in 3rd-party sites are infiltrating the rest of the net, and provide "a place on nearly every corner" where they toss cookies at our brosers.

Does that scare you yet? A "one stop shop" for search and browsing habits, the Gmail messages and Google Apps documents of those foolish enough to use those services, plus Google's interest in storing our medical records probably makes their datacenter look like Disneyland to the surveilence-mad control freaks who infest our governments.

STEP ONE: Let's find another search engine to use, and rally behind it.

MSN is obviously out. Yahoo is a takeover target. Ask.com has diversified their business into spyware (toolbar). My "old favorite", Alta Vista, is no more.

How about Lycos? Lycos/HotBot is still alive and kicking. Are they pursuing the less-than-noble?

WE CAN SUCCEED! Remember when Microsoft had better than 90% of the browser market? From the ashes of Netscape rose Mozilla. Since it's flagship, Mozilla, set sail from its home port on the San Francisco Bay, it keeps gaining the momentun with which it will somday reach the Puget Sound, and soon be visible from Steve "DOS is dead" Ballmer's Office Window (damn, a good pun could go here!)

I'm going to test drive Lycos vigoruosly over the next few days. begin keeping logs of all the "googlegoo" I come across in my www travels, assess the the potential threats, and possibly start writing a small utility, code-named "google-gone".

UPDATE: WOW! I type my last name into their search box, and *MY* site is at the top of the list! Amazing.. my (lastname).org site beat out my more-famous distant cousin in Minnesota, who is fairly well-known on the BSD Unix scene. He has the ".net", but does noy host a website there.

You're kidding right? Do you honestly think that any other search engine will be any different? Do you really think that what you do on the internet is private in any way?

If you want to use Lycos/Hotbot, see ya. Google is by far the best search engine out there..hands down. If Google actually wants to go through the terabytes/petabytes worth od data that they collect and then use that to target ads during search results or whatever, its a small price to pay for a free search service. No one is making you click the ads you know. As for the latest ruling where Google is being asked to turn over YouTube records, its not the end of the world. They can see your IP and where you went, but without your ISP providing your user name, there isn't much that can be derived from it except what is the more popular views.

The idea is to not allow too much data documenting our web usage -- search history, page visits, inbox contents, et.al. to collect and "pool" at any on location, or collection of locations that are controlled by the same entity, in any amount that may become attractable to those who might see it as a "fishing pond" for underhanded exploits common to entrepenurial trial lawyers (blackmail-via-lawsuit), and Constitution-burning bureaucrats (NSA, TSA).

Why doesn't someone write a browser that does automatic random web site visits that you could turn on when you are away from your computer. If you can't get surfing anonymity at least you could pollute the db. Would that be illegal? I, for one, don't realy care about data collection. Just, saying, there are other choices.

If you are concerned about keyword collection, then for every real search you do, you could do a search using nonsense keywords. If that was being done enough, their keyword DB would become worthless. If ggl's data collection bothers you then there are other choices out there.

I thought that had become the historical point of July 4th?

Of course it's the never ending rainy season around here, today included. Happy 4th for those that can bridge the storms. Have to figure out an alternative to the lake, not going through this next year; I believe if my bad memory serves me there have only been three clear July 4th's in my area since 1983!

Anyway, best to everyone and for those who have ideas for enjoying the 4th, aside water activities, I'm all ears

Let's not forget the document that made our nation possible, the Declaration of independence.

When in the Course of human events it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.

Thanks for posting this, as the majority of Americans I am sure have not take the time to read it or even attempt to truly understand what it means, what rights it does give us and the power of the people over Government. Our elected officials will do what ever they want until the people stand up and demand change, and not the empty rhetoric being currently spouted. I will let you be the judge of who the reference is to.

Fireworks Video in High Definition- Happy Independance Day!

I shot these fireworks last night at the Danbury Fair Mall with two full-raster high def video cameras, @ 1920x1080, with DAT-quality digital sound capture from two large-diaphragm studio condenser mics. Mix of overcranked (slow motio) and normal speed video to this clip to make it very 'busy'.
