Comments on news posted 2008-07-12 10:04:05: At the beginning of this year, VoIP provider ViaTalk was booted from the Better Business Bureau following an excessive number of customer complaints. Those customers that decided to hang in there with the company still have concerns. ..

Live and learn?

VOIP is not, and will never be, ready for prime time.

Why all the bad rep???

I'm not sure why this site keeps on beating ViaTalk? I've been with them for a good 8 months now and haven't had any issues with them. When ever I've had to call tech support, I've reached them with reasonable times. One thing I keep on pointing out on VOIP issue.....YOU NEED TO HAVE A GOOD RELIABLE BROADBAND PROVIDER!!! I'm with Time Warner in LA and am both very happy with my ISP and VOIP provider.

Maybe all the customers with issues don't know how to use/configure their home routers and thus the confusion?

Nonetheless, I'm very happy with my ViaTalk VOIP service.

Love the service and international rates

I have nothing but great things to say about ViaTalk. They have been a reliable service and they have the best rates around for international calls to Belize. Comcast and other telcos charge 65 cents whereas ViaTalk charges 26 cents. How can I beat that? Not even calling cards hit that!

Now I only wish they would offer existing customers the option to purchase 1 year for $99 bucks again.

Re: Love the service and international rates

There are several other companies that offer the rates to Belize at or lower than what VT does. Not to say you're not happy with them. I had connection problems with VT when dialing to Belize and still got charged for the calls.

I compared another provider next to them since my ATA allows 2 Line configuration. Calls were fine with the other provider and cheaper so I dropped VT. So maybe I just had a bad experience, and you're one of the lucky ones.

Care to PM me with details and a link to this other provider? We call Belize quite frequently and lower rates would be great.

All Kinds of service problems

I've had nothing but service problems for the last month. Calls that hang up immediately upon answering or calls that just go directly to voice mail. Now while on the phone it'll just hang up and I get a fast busy signal. I've opened two different tickets for this issue in the last few days and neither have been acted upon. I'm thinking I'll have to find an alternative phone service provider if I want reliable service. Quite frankly I'm a little shocked at just how unresponsive Viatalk's technical support has become. Seems once again a typical case of a company having terrific service to gather market share then screwing customers to increase profits by eliminating one of the very things that got them there in the first place.

I think this is more widespread ...

than most of the proponents are caring to talk about. The service has always been mediocre for me but every since this upgrade about 2 months ago, could not get incoming calls (could not hear the other person). Long story short and hours of my time trying to talk to personnel in support, I cancelled the service yesterday... bottom line, wireless pcs are more reliable than LAN lines and VOIP speaks for itself in the reliability category. To have someone say that my router (and they admit they have issues with DLINK) needs to be replaced, forget it and I refuse to shell out money to get their service to work on existing hardware that was working. Before the proponents chime in on buying a better router, I could have excepted a warning before the new system was put in place to allow me to make a decision on whether to keep the service or buy new hardware and continue to use it, then there would not been any hard feelings since I was on my free year anyway. Some of us don't live at home in mommy's basement and can afford to buy routers and switches at will, some of us have responsibilities and I think I made the right one yesterday.

Re: I think this is more widespread ...

the fact that it doesn't work on your router is not your problem...that is on viatalk. DLink is a very common router, it should work with it. Period.

I have been having the same issue with a Checkpoint Safe@Office. What are they going to say to me, my Checkpoint is too cheap a router?! Highly doubtful...

However, I am giving them the opportunity to furnish one of the new Grandstream adapters to solve the problem and keep a generally happy customer onboard. (the Grandstream you can put infront of your router, so shouldn't have issues)

Re: I think this is more widespread ...

they never offered to swap out the adapter (Linksys), they just fed me the same BS over and over again and since the switch had been implemented across all servers, the service was useless. After deciding they were refusing to work with me until I got another router, they got dropped and I do not regret the decision. Wireless PCS is fine with me, I was going that route before giving VOIP a shot about 5 years ago, now it's official.

IMO, if you are not willing to learn about your router's configuration options, nor research how to switch VOIP proxy servers -then you are at risk of having a bad VOIP experience. Also you should have a backup plan should your VOIP provider suddenly shut-down.

I got flushed when SunRocket melted. Viatalk let me use the SunRocket adapters and I never lost phone service. I've only called Viatalk Support once, that was to inquire of my order status the day after I signed-up. & I'm no SE -zero LAN/WAN experience, but willing to learn. If I can make this work without issue then (imo) any can.

Re: I think this is more widespread ...

well i know my router's config backwards and forwards and I bent over backwards to get it to work with what I had, DMZ, static IP,,, you name it!! But when support says that its MY PROBLEM and it was fine before the upgrade, I for one am not going to purchase more equipment to get their service to work,,,that defeats the whole "Savings" selling point. Sure, routers are relatively inexpensive, but if they are the only issue, I'm satisified with my decision, not everyone has the same experience. I think companies like this have long way to go.

most people that have voip through anyone other than their cable provider likely know at least the basics of home routers...including logging into the admin interface to change a setting...IMHO
