Comments on news posted 2008-07-25 15:24:11: After Earthlink pulled out of the muni-fi business, the company couldn't find anyone to buy their network in Philadelphia. Just as it appeared the project would be shuttered, several local investors stepped in and purchased the network. ..

p2p and pr0n

I wonder how much of that new traffic is p2p and pr0n from broke teenagers.

The 1 mbit/s upload on Philly wifi is faster than 384 kbit/s on Comcast.

Money?

The new owners hope to actually make something called "money" by offering higher grade wired/wireless service to local businesses, hospitals and universities.
After the mayor, city council, licenses and inspections department, and the unions get their take I doubt there will be any money left.

Philly is a very corrupt city from the mayor down to the trash men.

Lots of users...

I wonder what's fueling the Wi-Fi network to hold that many users online at once. Otherwise, glad to hear the Wi-Fi project that Earthlink failed to work with is going nicely with the new guys. Free is better!

Hey,
Don't forget the govt up too. Mr Ed Rendell, Govenor, will want some of that too. He was from Philly.

But not faster than the 1 Mbps that most of Comcast's customers now see.

Go ahead, talk about the caps and throttling. Don't disappoint us!

The unions are there to protect the city's employee's, I work for a philadelphia AFSCME local and I see the work that they do practically everyday.

The building trade unions that the wifi people will have to deal with will demand money for their leaders to get anything done. Ask Rick Mariano or Bob Dougherty. I know because I live in Philly and witnessed the corruption for many, many years.

The Last Union Town

The city has long been held economic hostage by trade unions that overcharge for everything from building skyscrapers to screwing in light bulbs at the Convention Center.

But free doesn't pay the bills. Someone has to pay for atleast a T3 to run the network, if not more (its mention in the wifi contract with Earthlink what kind of bandwidth earthlink will feed the network with, i forgot it off the top of my head).

And I'm sure whoever can, will demand to be paid the electric bill for the APS.

competition

with the competition from: a)philly politicians who expect their pockets to be lined; b) philly unions which will break legs to ensure they get their share; and c) comcastic which does what it has to do to crush competition, i'm not sure this free wifi has a prayer. many will agree in theory it's a great idea but when it comes to $$$$$, mobster politicians/union members & comcast will seal its fate.
