Comments on news posted 2008-07-28 08:45:24: Forum posters had hinted as much, but now it's official: Verizon has bumped their FiOSTV HD channel count and now offers 100HD channels in the New York area, something they claim is more than Time Warner or Cablevision. ..

11a EDT for webcast

Seems like the webcast will begin at 11a EDT if the current webcast feed is to be believed.

Time Warner + Cablevision = screwed

Now that Verizon has as much HD channels as the satellite guys in NYC, and not to mention faster internet and a franchise, Time Warner and Cablevision are pretty much screwed unless they push DOCSIS 3.0 deployment, and move to digital.

Grand Central TERMINAL

Karl, it's Grand Central TERMINAL. Grand Central Station is an entirely different place (it's a post office).

And TW would have to hold off on caps there too.

Cable companies will have to adapt fast or they will perish. I wouldn't count them out just yet. I can see DOSCIS3 over fiber somewhere in the future... it is inevitable.

Just in time for the Verizon strike next month...

Just kidding... Well, I'm hoping for some real competition here. I'm not so enthused by Verizon only because as they gain customers from TWC and become bigger and bigger in NYC - I have every reason to believe that their customer service will be as mediocre as TWC. I am really hoping, though, that the competition brings down the prices and improves the service because the way it is with satellite and TWC now is that while they both are "competitive" - their prices and service are almost the same. When one jacks up the price, so does the other. Maybe with FiOS being more widely available to those people in MUDs that don't have access to satellite will bring a real change and competition.

This whole rollout doesn't even affect my neighborhood probably for a few more years, but if I can benefit from price competition, it will make me happy enough.

(I have TWCNYC and Dish Network right now. - glutton for punishment)

Ps. It seems like all the Queens communities that have FiOS now are all closer to the Nassau County border with perhaps the exception of Whitestone. How about giving some access to the people on the East River side... People in Astoria don't have it, but people across the river in the Upper East Side do.

I already have 50mb/20mb FIOS. As soon as FIOS TV is available in my building I'm switching to that as well. Timewarner Cable sucks.

Brevity, Thy Name Is Verizon

Maybe we shouldn't read anything into it, but, it's the shortest Q&A session I've heard in quite a while. Mark F

Perhaps Verizon is holding the event in the original Grand Central Station? Granted, this would require time travel back to 1900.

Verizon is Lying to it's Customers

When I go to their site to specifically see if Verizon FIOS is available in my area it does not say no. It instead directs me to a bundle of their slow, bullshit dsl plus Direct TV. Fix your web site Verizon. I want to know if FIOS is available in my area and not be offered a DSL Direct TV bundle..I switched to TWC because your dsl service is terrible and you're not doing yourself any favors when a PC (potential customer) goes to your web site and clicks the link specifically labeled to see if I can get FIOS and you offer me a bundle of slow dsl and Direct TV. Your web site says to check here to see if FIOS is available. Stop lying to your customers.

What about those outside of New York

Texas would like to see some upgrades for once. I'm sure other locales would as well.

I see we get screwed to make a marketing point. Still what they call HD is not always HD. Just because it's blown up to match a set resolution does not mean it's HD.

Perhaps it's time to get the FCC to define HD so we get what were paying for.

Reality Check

We should take a deep breath and be realistic. The list Verizon put out listing where FIOS is available is practically meaningless when it comes to apartment inhabitants, i.e. if you live in Manhattan. Whether you get can FIOS depends completely on whether your landlord or building owner has reached an agreement with Verizon to wire the building. Time Warner and Cablevision are going to rely on this inherent inertia; unfortunately, it's going to be YEARS before FIOS is deployed to the point where you can just assume that the building you're living in has it available.

I just stopped off the Verizon event at Grand Central Terminal. They're giving away free stuff like bags and also promotional stuff like channel guide. They also have notebooks where they will look up your address. The website they use is the same one publicly available online. Unfortunately, my building located in West Side/Midtown of Manhattan (57th and 11th Ave) isn't wired, even though it was only built 3 years ago. I wish my management company would do something but I'm not going to hold my breath.

Re: Time Warner + Cablevision = screwed

I don't see "thousands" jumping ship yet when Verizon never makes the fees available. I don't know why I have to live in area serviced by them to see how much the services will cost. Also they don't make information available as to how much they will screw you for after the year term is over.

Aside from this the only information I have seen related to internet cost is at least 3 times as much as what OOL charges for the same speed. In addition are these 100 HD channels individual channels or are multiple feeds of the same channels? Can anyone share information related to their fees in order to make a fair comparison?

Cancel? How can they cancel when the service isn't available in most places in NYC yet which primarly consist of multiple dwellings??!!!! What service are they gonna cancel to, HughesNet Satellite internet? LMAO

Cable companies shiting in their pants? LMAO Okay yeah, Verizon Fios is available in all 5 boroughs of NYC and every Tom Dick and Harry can order it right? Oh yeah I'm sure TWC and Cablevision are petrified. Give me a f*ckin break. You fanboys don't get it. It's NOT FUCKING AVAILABLE YET! Especially in places that matter. By the time Verizon finishes cherry picking and deploying the service in the areas they want, it will be 20 years or more.

Let's see Verizon deploy area like Canarsie and East New York Brooklyn. Or places like the South Bronx. Houses dont count. No, lets see them deploy 20+ story buildings which there are a shit load of in the 5 boroughs of NYC. Let's see them deploy Co-Op City in the Bronx or it's distant cousin Starrett City in Brooklyn. Then you know what, I'd actually start taking them seriously and so should Cablevision but until then, it's all bull$hit that Verizon is spewing.

Not for nothing but I'd be first in line if Verizon offered Fios in my hood but you know what, it just isn't so and wont be for many years. By then the cable companies would have well caught up and not many will give two shit anymore. The novelty will be gone and Fios will just be another form of provider offering cable, internet and telephone service. Not anymore special then the cables companies who have offered it years before them
