1 edit | I'll believe it when I see the data
said by Dish Network : Starting August 1, Warner Bros. Pictures' blockbuster "I Am Legend" starring Will Smith will be available in 1080p resolution -- same as Blu-ray(R) Disc quality -- on DISH Network's VOD service, DISH On Demand, at a discounted price. Subscribers with MPEG-4 HD DVRs may order the movie on DISH Network Channel 501.
So we're to expect Blu-Ray quality? Sorry, I don't believe it. Of course it wouldn't be the first time I've been wrong but I will not believe it until I see actual bitrate (and other) data. |

.... and not the satellite. 1080P is for their VOD component.
So all their bragging depends on the cable companies and telco to deliver their hot new product for them. »www.dishnetwork.com/content/what···ex.shtml |

They wouldn't be announcing it if that were true. Obviously it does support 1080p, just doesn't have it listed as supported because they didn't previously provide it. If the chips in the DVR are capable then all they needed was to update the software to handle it and I bet most of the IC's used in production support 1080p even if the provider doesn't implement the support. |

1 edit | reply to TKJunkMail Re: 1080P comes over your broadband connection ....
The Telcos other than Verizon where there's FiOS rely on the satellite companies. Because of that, they'd obviously not want to tick off their bundled Satellite TV customers by capping their VOD. But it is possible to do 1080p over a satellite. We'll just have to see what Dish can cough up.
And for anyone who doesn't think Dish's DVR/HD receivers can do 1080p, guess again. My family relatives have their latest box, and it is delivering their TV 1080p via HDMI. It even shows up in a setting in the HDMI setup in the receiver which it is set for. |

How can DTV show something in 1080p? No receiver I've seen from them offers that output format to your TV (highest/best I've seen is 1080i). Is there a new receiver they have that does this? |

| n/m. not only am i asking about the wrong company here but TK Junkmail already answered this.
(though I can assume DTV is doing what Dish is going to do to offer this - broadband delivery. So does this require a ethernet connection to your receiver? Is this new?)
And I'm at work so I'm not logged into to edit my own post... |

| So which 1080p?
said by »www.hdtvprimer.com/ISSUES/what_is_ATSC.html : What is 1080p? The term 1080p causes a lot of confusion because people are using it in conflicting ways: 1. The transmission formats 1080 24p and 1080 30p are sometimes called 1080p. But the term 1080p should never be used to refer to a transmission format.
2. If 1080p is to 1080i what 480p is to 480i then 1080p is a 60 frames per second monitor interface format. 1080 60p is becoming a common interface format. But since there are no 1080 60p sources, there is no need for it. (When a 24 frame source is converted to 1080i, no information is lost. A smart monitor can convert this 1080i into a perfect 1080 60p or 120p.)
3. When the maker of a digital display finds a way to improve upon 1080i he will usually say his display does 1080p. The improvement is often just a way to reduce flicker. The sets internally do 1080p but only accept 1080i at the interface.
If you want to be understood unambiguously, you should refrain from using the term 1080p. Instead use 1080p60, etc.
