| par for the course just another part of the war on file stealers.
every part of American society and government must be enlisted to fight infringement, because the media companies are so important for our existence, ya know (even more important than terraism).

Colleges have knowingly permitted their networkes to be used for wholesale copyright infringement for years, and have refused to do any self-policing. If you don't clean up your own house, and continue to permit illegal activity that a multibillion dollar business says is hurting the bottom line, you're gonna get stomped on by the government. Not only can the entertainment industry afford plenty of lobbyists, it is one of the few industries than contributes a positive export cash flow; i.e., they've got lots of friends in D.C.
Yea, lots of posters here want to do whatever they want online, and rationalize that they're only hurting "greedy" corporations. Well, those corporations send alot of money to D.C., and when was the last time you sent a check to the EFF?

| | | | | | Re: par for the course Actually, songs sell at a fraction of that cost. Try mp3sparks.com, it's less than .05 cents per song. Guess what, the prices they set in the US don't have much meaning on a GLOBAL internet. And movies? FREE, from netflix. Just save the stream, and you have a movie that you PAID FOR (by subscribing to NexFlix).
Granted, in your world, the megacorps control what you watch, when you watch it, where you watch it, and how much you pay, EVERY TIME you watch it. But the good news is, they don't control the rest of the world. And the REST OF THE WORLD has determined that the prices they charge in the US, well, just aren't worth it.

Seriously I think you must be stupid. Let's just say everyone pirated everything. Would new stuff ever get made? If you think so why? What is the motivation to create new movies, Tv shows or music if the artist won't get paid? what just to please you? If your boss said from now you you will work but not get paid, how long would you stay at that job? Not long.

Let's just say that the amount of crap that gets funding (honestly, how many good movies get made? 5%? How many good cds? 2%?) proves that the industry is too rich still.
I wish that people would stop paying for the crap they produce.
Also, their problem is not people making copies, it's their business model that doesn't work. Great movies still register great sales (record sales even). People will buy the good stuff. It's the bad stuff that gets killed by the copying (since then people can watch it without paying and won't get their greens out for crap).

its not illegal saving the stream is no different then pushing record on a VCR while you have the cable box tuned to HBO while a movie is on, HBO isnt free either but no law states one cant tape it. -- [65 Arcanist]Filan(High Elf) Zone: Broadband Reports

| I just hope this doesn't result in higher tuition and fees, I wouldn't mind if the RIAA/MPAA policed my school's network, just as long as they foot the bill for software, and hardware support and maintenance relating to this.
I think if students really wanted to screw with their schools, they could just rescind their Master Promissory Note for their student loans, so the school couldn't get their loan money without a fight. If 17,000 students did that at my school maybe the administration wouldn't be so likely to be copyright cops. -- NIL ILLEGITIMUS CARBORUNDUM!

| | The possible slippery slope effects still unknown But this paragraph pretty much raises questions as to why the hell they'd even bother: quote: Still, a representative from the House Education and Labor Committee said that the law does not require universities to police students, but rather to inform them of their campus policies and the legal implications of downloading and disseminating copyrighted materials. It asks that universities develop a plan for deterring file-sharing, but it does not mandate any specific program.
If this is the extent of it, wonder why the Congress bothered with yet another pointless mandate. -- Moore/Alexander 2008

Yes: 45 Dems, 36 Reps, 2 Inds No: 0 Dems, 8 Reps, 0 Inds No vote: 4 Dems, 4 Reps, 0 Inds
So there you have it, all but 8 voted for it not counting the 4 democrats and 4 republicans who didn't cast a vote.

| Blame this one on your local library The library is mostly to blame for all this. They have every audio CD known to man that a person can check out for free. Then the audio CD can be encoded on to his or her computer in the MP3 or WMA format. If a person were to check out 50 or more audio CD's a day just think of how many audio files a person would with in a year. OK lets use little poor me for example. I have a; Internal 250GB SATA 3.0Gb/s Internal 320GB SATA 3.0Gb/s External 500GB USB 2.0 60Mb/s External 500GB USB 2.0 60Mb/s External 500GB USB 2.0 60Mb/s External 500GB USB 2.0 60Mb/s I go to the Kent Library and much as possible and every time I go I check out 100 audio CD's at a time. I encode them on to my computer in the WMA @ 192Kbps but not to worry I don't share them vs a P2P network. Just goes to show you how easy it is to get music on to your computer. | |

| | | Re: Blame this one on your local library not my university they're not | |

| | Illegality of litigation and actions need to be taken by all Harvard is the sole university publicly standing against the RIAA/MPAA in a direct face down. However, the industries do not want this publicized because Harvard's just a bunch of the greatest lawyers America has ever seen; what harm could they do to the industries illegal, immoral and insensible litigation? Oh, that's right; they could set a legal precedent outlawing the industries from litigating at such high costs (they sue for thousands per violation; legally they are only allowed to sue for cost + punitive and subjective charges somewhere in the range of say less than $50 per violation...)
»cyber.law.harvard.edu/node/479 »arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20···ent.html
More people need to fire back at the industries as well as the government. I for one struck down a policy at my own university which was overly cruel; I encourage others to fight for their rights as students in a restricted country supposedly "free."
