Some other countries allow cell phone use in flight. Anyone know how that is working out. Personally I do not want to listen to cell phone conversations in the confined environment of a plane. -- Registered Bandwidth Offender #40812 |

A failed congress has it all wrong. We have an ENERGY crisis in America at the moment. I want to thank each and every one of my reps for taking the time to address cell phone use which is already not allowed on flights. I want to thank them for taking this up ESPECIALLY at a time where airlines are hurting and people are not flying now anyway. I want to thank them for ignoring oil prices that affects everything we buy, and not just the tank. I want to thank them for addressing an issue which is so low on the totem pole it's buried in the ground.
WTF?
I think if anything they should spend their time working to give some operating ability to airlines so that the American traveler can actually get back in the sky, so they aren't forced to pay per bag, or pay for a drink of water on the plane, and are not seeing skyrocketing prices of fares.
But damn it! They did it! We can't do something we already can't do! BRAVO! |

| One bill I hope Passes
I think this is one bill that should pass. Who wants to hear other peoples crap (usually loudly) on a 3 hour flight. It's bad enough on local commuter trains for 1 hour.
While they are at it ban them in cars while the car is moving. The technology to do that should be easy with all the electronics in modern cars. Every car you come across in the passing lane going 30 in a 40 zone has a cell phone stuck in their ear. |

| Thank goodness.
In public places, you can walk away from someone who's talking obnoxiously loud on a cellphone. In a plane, you're stuck. I'm in favor of the ban. With Internet services beginning to be deployed on many carriers, those addicted to constant chatter can opt to connect with their friends online. |

1 edit | Why a Law?
Why does this need to be a federal law? Couldn't the individual Airlines just ban cell phone usage as they see fit, if it's even a problem? Seems like Europe and Asia don't really care.
This is just wasteful Gov't spending! I hope this Bill does not pass! Where's the damn telecom lobby when you actually need them.. lol.

While we're at it, let's ban mobile phones anywhere except your home.. that would certainly make mobile phones, aka car phones, and all the money invested to bring this technology to life.
I personally am not so worried about "others people's crap" taking into account that I have no desire to use my phone on a plane, while in flight. I don't need nanny government telling me how to regulate my life. I believe that the FCC and the Airlines have the ability to control those big bad cell phone users already.
Now to you personally.. please tell me that you have NEVER EVER in your life EVER put a cell phone to your ear while driving. Each one of you egotistical people who cry about cell phone use in the car REALLY should come clean and say "EVERYONE ELSE should not have a cell phone in their ear" because that is more accurate. Seriously.. no one can agree with me at large when I say that everyone that gripes about cell phone use in the car, in the store, in a public place, in a restaurant, etc. has done it themselves, only THEY believe they are fine since it's probably a "short call" or they're "being polite".. when in fact, how does anyone know that people are not also one timers or short callers or polite callers themselves? Its easy to look out of the window and round everyone else up but themselves..
(Disclaimer: Yes, there are people that "yap" and are "loud" however, I think people exaggerate when they say "everyone" does it or EVERYONE is loud or EVERYONE is rude.. that simply isn't true.
These soap box "people are bad" or "rude" comments are really self-serving and old. This thread took off quick too. ANY cell phone on a plane thread is just like the next. No matter WHAT the reason for posting it, you are GUARANTEED that it will always be filled with "I don't want no one yapping on the phone next to me" ... so why bother posting these stories at all? Everyone feel better now?

said by antwanp :Couldn't the individual Airlines just ban cell phone usage as they see fit Again I agree. BUT, we all know the EFF, the ACLU, and every other group that cares more about a few individuals rather than the public at large would be suing the airlines and petitioning the FCC to force the airlines to allow cellphones in flight. So a law may be the only way to do this.

LOL, right-wingers just can't resist taking a swing at the EFF and ACLU.
FYI, the EFF and ACLU exist because corporations and our government have a long history of trampling on people's rights. For example, years ago if a black guy was driving thru a white neighborhood, the cops would pull him over and question him. If a crime had been committed recently in the neighborhood, the cops would probably haul him in for questioning. Often, the innocent were wrongly convicted. If not for the ACLU, that scenario would occur more frequently than it does today. |

| So why not a Shut Up Act...
to keep everyone from talking "obnoxiously loud" no matter where they are? (Freedom of Speech anyone? ...anyone? Bueller?)
The airlines should "get smart" and install a cone of silence for each passenger. |

said by TKJunkMail :I hope it passes just to stop the annoying people who would talk non-stop during a flight. It clearly violates the 1st Amendment. There is no public safety issue involved. The proof is that internet access and text messaging would be allowed. $4.00/gal is just sooooo bad. I think our neighbors across the pond in London would disagree with that sentiment.
But if the government and the people of America were really interested in solving the "crisis", instead of wasting time trying to drill for more oil (which won't produce anything for at least five to ten years), perhaps the effort of the government should go to asking why so much of the domestic oil and gas production is EXPORTED to other countries. -- --- Eleven years of carrying The Clue Bat... |

You do realize that a law banning the using of cell phones for reasons other than possible avionic equipment intereference actually DOES run afoul of the first Amendment, no?
Contrary to what you have said, the government enacting a law that bans cell phone usage on planes actually would be THE catalyst for a lawsuit, not the other way around.
And before anyone mentions laws banning cell phone usage in cars, the public safety considerations and mountains of data on the effect of cell phone usage in vehicles is why those laws probably won't get struck down. -- --- Eleven years of carrying The Clue Bat... |

Each one of you egotistical people who cry about cell phone use in the car REALLY should come clean and say "EVERYONE ELSE should not have a cell phone in their ear" because that is more accurate. I'll admit I've use a cell phone while driving but I will also admit that my driving suffered because of it. When I see someone doing 40 MPH on the freeway in the middle lane or weaving all over the road, 99% of the time, the driver is on a cell phone.
Of course, here in California, it's now illegal to yap on a phone while driving unless it's "hands free" and I think the law is a good thing. Have I seen a difference? You bet. From what I've seen the number of stupid things done on the road has decreased since July 1st.
FWIW, I use a bluetooth visor hands-free set when I take or make calls while driving.
Edit: I passed a pick-up doing 50 MPH with Nevada plates on the freeway today. Sure enough, he had a phone stuck in his ear. |

| reply to fiberguy I for one, do not answer the cell when I am driving.
Driving while talking on cell phones has repeatedly been shown to distract the driver (with or without hands free). Ask any cop, the vast majority(certainly not all) of accidents involve one or both parties being on a cell phone. The first thing an attorney does is get the other person's cell phone records. So I would agree that cell phones in cars should be banned.
As for the aircraft, only allow the calls to be made in certain areas. If you are going to ban cell calls then ban ALL in flight calls, including the airplanes phone (forget what the name is). |

| Need a Screaming Brat In The Box Law first.
Have you ever found yourself sitting within one seat in any direction of a screaming brat. I would be a lot happier with the noise created by someone chatting on a cell phone than the sound of a screaming brat. I was on one flight where a brat was screaming so loud that I thought someone was jaming ice picks in my ears. All aircraft should be required to carry one or more soundproof containers similar to a child carrier with windows and with sufficient ventilation to sustain life, for the purpose of placing a screaming brat. That way the other passengers will not have to suffer hearing damage. |
