Anyone know where a decent slingbox can be purchased? Most just offer standard AV connections.

Also, I am assuming this eats a ton of bandwidth. Anyone know exact numbers?

It is pretty bandwidth intensive. Ideally you'd want at least 512kbps-1mbps upload speed on your home connection to sling with decent quality to another computer. More is better, obviously. I have 2mbps upload and it looks great!

Sounds like you might be wanting the slingbox pro which does HD and has loads of inputs, but it's kind of expensive.

Re: Bandwidth

On my home network it runs in HQ mode (not the new Software but the previous version) about 3Mbps. I have the Slinbox AV (Just the AV inputs, not the tuner)

Over the net it was set at about 600Kbps. Haven't used it at the office since comcast upped my upstream so I'm not sure how much it will use now. The picture was good at 600K before though. I'm going to be upgrading to the new software once I get home.

Re: Purchased

I know the software is free, I was asking about the hardware. I do have the 16/2 connection that Comcast offers, but I do a lot of xbox live, and I wouldnt want to see any lag there.

I have never had one, but it may be worth it to stream it to my laptop to watch TV in bed.

You would only need to utilize your wireless router's speed for streaming to your laptop at home. Regardless, it would not be uploading unless you were connecting, so it should not affect your game performance. It's not constantly streaming video over your network unless you access it with the sling player software.

Re: Purchased

The Slingbox Pro has an "HDMI" jack - not standard HDMI. You have to buy a doodad from them that will let you input a component signal and also has a pass-through.

I get a decent picture with 384 kbps up, that is when my RoadRunner connection is up.

I would love to see it work with media center.

Vista currently supports the broadcast flag and as a result any channel with that set cannot be viewed anymore. I already have two channels blocked on my cable. If sling integrated with media center it could be used as the tuner and let vista ignore the tag. I have a hava, but it's quality is terrible.

Re: Purchased

I was in the same situation as you and bought a Slingbox last week (should be here on Monday).

No Slingbox currently supports an HDMI connection. The HDMI port on the Slingbox Pro is just a plug-in for a dongle that can accept component inputs.

If you want multiple inputs, your choices are boiled down to the SLingbox Solo and the Slingbox Pro. Neither will output in high def, but both can accept component inputs.

The major differences between the two is the Pro can control and accept inputs from several sources, and costs the most. The Solo will only accept input and control one source, but is a bit cheaper.

I went with the Solo myself since I will only be using my HD DVR over the connection. The cheapest I was able to find it was at Amazon for about $150 USD with free shipping.

There is nothing wrong the Hava. I think the quality of the Hava is better. I have a Hava, Sling Solo, Sling AV and Sling Tuner. Sling has a better user interface with shortcut buttons and keyboard shortcuts while Hava has nada.

I love the SBox

Love the new player. I have the FiOS 20/20 connection and it looks great. Sorry I couldn't help but mention that

Re: Purchased

If you don't need any HD, try to find one of the older versions. The new versions are more specialized in what they can and can't do. I have a slinbox classic and it works great.
Input:
RCA audio (LR)
Composite video
S-video
RF Coaxial

RJ-45 Ethernet
IR emitter

Output:
RCA audio (LR)
Composite video
S-video

Re: I love the SBox

Are you slinging FiOS TV with the SlingBox? Which SB do you have and how is it set up? My in-Laws just had FiOS installed and I'd like to drop a slingbox down there, but I'm not sure which box to use and may not be able to monopolize a tuner.
I might need to pay for a dedicated tuner to handle it.

I dropped a SlingBox at a customer's site w/ a 15/2 connection and a BrightHouse basic package they use for 10 minutes a year. As I don't own a tv, it allows me to watch those few channels I might be willing to pay for but BH won't sell to me unless they crap it up with a package.

I just picked up a AT&T tilt with unlimited data. I'll get the sling mobile player and sweet 5" tv bliss will be mine.

It's proof of something that I am the proud owner of "Wireless Cable".

Broken thru a proxy server

Wow this beta version sucks. Won't even open thru a proxy connection. Kinda defeats the purpose of place-shifting(remote viewing) when I can't watch my slingbox at home from work...

I just updated to it and have had no problems with it that I did not have with the old version, which is not being able to control the DVR functions. Everything else works fine. I am in Mississippi now watching my box in Houston with good quality video. The new version seems to have less lag.

Re: I love the SBox

Sorry I don't have FiOS TV just their Internet. I have the SBox AV hooked up to our Dish HD receiver ViP622 and the quality is just fine. Everything works like a charm. I can view programming while traveling with no problems. I just wish there would be a SlingPlayer for the BlackBerry. X'ing fingers.

Good luck.

It is called a beta for a reason people. You test it out if something doesn't work you report it and they tweak and when the final release comes out and it still don't work or is missing feature then it's a problem. As of right now it should be problem hence the word 'beta'.
