Verizon has made it so if you try to connect through your phone it will display a generic verizon page telling you that you need to subscribe to there service in order to tether which is BS seeing that i already subscribe to there data plan for like 45 beans a month is that not enough? then they want Monthly Allowance Monthly Access Per MB Rate

Cellular broadband is too ridiculously expensive and restrictive that's what's keeping it from taking off. It's quite clear that they don't need to charge as much as they do, especially when they're willing to lower a fee from $50 to $15 just like that.
Cellular broadband for the price you pay isn't worth shit!

I did some tethering on my AT&T 3G phone under the $15 media plan, and never got burned. You just have to ensure that you connect to 'wap' access point name and not 'isp'

As stated in the article, one really only gets a $4.99 discount. The whole unofficial tethering idea is like playing Russian roulette since they could legally zing you will a large bill.
However, Sprint used to make PDA/Pocket PC owners pay extra for email access, but now is included in their $15/month plan. Also, they have a share plan (2 lines) with unlimited SMS and "unlimited data" + 1500 min. for $130 which isn't a bad deal.
It really is too bad that Sprint did implement a 5GB cap. I do wonder if AT&T and other backbone providers forced them into that situation. |

I pay $15 for unlimited data and use a program called wmwifi router that basically uses ICS to share my phones internet connection.
I've never paid a dime in additional fees and have been downloading HUGE files. Been using it for well over a year now. |

I've been tethering since the days of the A800 phone (the one that looked like an egg). I've been tethering about 6 years. Then with the PPC6700 and now with the Mogul.
I've never tethered more than a couple of gigs in a month... So far nothing.
As a matter of fact, one time I made my phone dial a number via my laptop, and I was charged, I called sprint and told them, hey I have an unlimited data plan, what's the issue here. So promptly credited my account the 2 dollars they over charging me. |

The programs like usbmodem, wmwifirouter, and pdanet make it darn near impossible to nail you, as it disables the tethered nai and uses the phone's mobile browser identification for the data connection...thus it looks like you're simply using the internet on your phone (keep in mind this mainly applies to smartphones/pda phones.)
Been tethering my mogul for a year now, and before that I was tethering my Q for six months, nary a word.
In fact the 5GB caps don't even really apply to the "under the radar" people either, though when you start being a data hog like that, I wouldn't feel bad if they did catch ya. I probably use 500-800MB/month between the actual data used by my phone and light tethering while on the road a couple times a week. |

| I've been tethering on my Treo with Sprint for several years. Don't tend to use much more than 1GB/month even when streaming radio often (radioio). Works very well for a laptop connection anywhere there is a call signal.
I do have a Sprint broadband card on my work laptop too. There isn't too much performance difference.
The price drop is great for more than casual use but not as you primary connection. Many of the new WiFi/3G routers do work with Sprint phones though. |

I have a Mac book with bluetooth, and a Palm Treo 755p. Is there a freeware program that I can use to get on the net with my phone tethered? I also have the data cable and the data plan on my phone. I don't need this very often but it sure would be nice to use and also fly under the radar.

Thanks I don't think there's any free software for it, but usbmodem works with mac I think. It's a one-time fee of $25 for the software. Considering what you get for the money, I feel it's definitely worth it.

Phone as a modem on Sprint has been free on the Blackberry plan, at least for me it was. I paid the $39 data plan fee and it was always included. |
