Excellent Idea

Hopefully this notion will spread to satellite TV as well. I think I speak for most here when I say that paying a high price for something proprietary to a particular entertainment medium.

While this is not quite related to satellite "broadband" I am glad I rent my cable box. If there is any problem that I do not personally cause I just tell Comcast to get me a replacement.

so?

sat broadband is still slow, expensive and has high latency.

but I guess now you're not stuck with expensive equipment when if real broadband comes around.

Expect explosion of new adds

Followed by even slower speeds and worse service for existing customers.

*BREAKING NEWS*

Due to an overwhelming number of new customers, WildBlue has been forced to lower the FAP limit from 250MB to 25MB. We are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause.

What do you mean spread to satellite?
You have been able to get free installs for awhile now. I just signed up for Dish's HD Absolute w/ DVR & Locals a few months ago. I paid no up front costs and simply pay $42.XX monthly for the majority of their HD stations. I didn't even have to pay for the first month.

at times with DirecTV you actually have to by the DVR.

sat net flaw

Ya know.. If there was some way that satellite internet could maintain 600ms ping or roughly there abouts and reasonable amount of daily traffic a day.. Or even a traffic roll over plan so if you don't use all your traffic for one day, the extra will roll over to the next and so forth.. This will keep the cool kiddies from hogging it all and still allow the average person with the occasional download burst to still enjoy their service....

Just a thought.. I like the lease plan that wildblue is starting.. Pretty good idea.. If we can just make a better usage plan they would do better...

Every time I have looked into getting satellite based HD service I have always been asked to buy the boxes. I don't know if that is still the case now though, as I have not looked in the past few months, so maybe things have changed.

Let's go on the assumption that I would still have to purchase the equipment. Even if I got the one box at a discount I would to purchase at least 2. That alone would mean a significant outflow of cash out of my pocket.

On top of that, if I decided I did not like the service, then I would be stuck with a box that would not work with any other provider.

Re: sat net flaw

No problems for satellite doing consistent 600ms pings, high speeds, and reasonable traffic levels. I have all that with my commercial connection, but the prices are not for those who think $60-$80 per month for consumer satellite are exhorbitant!

Let's see here...

Right now WildBlue, via online, offers free installation and $250 equipment. At $6 a month it'd take a little less than four years for WB to get back the money on the sat system versus having it as an install fee. Sounds good to me, as long as they don't tie you into a four-year contract

This way, the price to switch over to other providers from WB will be lower in terms of sunk equipment costs, so WB is actually helping anyone willing to compete with then in a given area out.

I think you misunderstood. The price of a commercial connection is many times the price of a consumer connection. There is no upper limit, depending on what you want.

Well, yeah i'm sure commecial is more expensive, maybe even comparable to a T1 in some places.. I"m just saying that the cheapest residential package compares to price of my current fees i'm willing to pay.. Only I want more stability and usability with my service..... This being said, i'd pay 60 a month in a heart beat for dsl or cable access... But that'll never happen from what i'm seeing...

I am with WildBlue and would like to clarify something to avoid the chance of any misinformation being spread. The above statement is false. We have not made any changes to our Fair Access Policy thresholds with the new lease program.

Thank you.

Re: Excellent Idea

Actually with the way DirecTV and Dish work, you have to return the receivers. You're not buying them, you're leasing them.

thar's money in them thar things

Eventually all those $5.95's add up to what the boxes cost, then its all gravy to the company then.

But it's available just about anywhere. Which is alot more places then where cable or DSL is available (especially if you are in Verizon territory).
