Comments on news posted 2008-08-28 18:31:56: Qwest has been the least aggressive of the three baby bells in upgrading their broadband network, partially because they lack a cash cow wireless division (charging a million dollars per SMS really helps your bottom line), but also because they were .. ..

Aaaaand...Qwest still uses interleave practically everywhere (+45 ms latency on the first hop around here) and PROVISIONED (not actual) speeds top out at 5120/896 for a $47 a month dry line. They must be copper-fed or something; downloads are absolutely SMOKING to get up to 4.25 Mbps down, 700k up. Usually more like 3.5/600. However with ComCaps they could take over the market if they intro'd FTTN ADSL2+ here.

Yes it does, cleaver ads help

They are beating on Cox in Omaha on the radio.

"Powerboost is GREAT!.... for 7 seconds, then it's back to waiting for your download to finish."

"It's like love found and love lost, cox will leave you going slow in just 7 seconds."

Then again I have said before, I am 3 blocks from a fiber fed DSLAM and I don't qualify for 20mb, but my 6MB still kicks *ss!

Re: verizon

Don't be so sure. They're spending a LOT on each customer (the cost averages out to $4,000 per residential customer according to a recent NYT article) so it may get there sooner than later...

I am waiting for a little sweeter Direct TV deal to switch. Long enough to get a decent deal, not so long as waiting in a line. Qwest has a decent amount of TV VDSL customers so if wait till last minute Direct TV or if leave entirely COX may have a waiting list switching all the customers along with their normal work.

Not here in Phoenix, at least in my area, if the bandwidth is available Cox powerboost stays active, I've gone at least 30 min at 23/4

no reason for them to upgrade

Mostly because Qwest covers a huge rural area and next to no competition in those areas, no reason for them to upgrade.

Qwest

"Sticking with ADSL2+ (896kbps upstream) and hoping they'll be able to compete with DOCSIS 3.0 cable speeds? Less so."
-
Hate to break it to them but cablevision was beating 896kbps upload in the NINETIES on DOCSIS 1.0 gear!
Qwest is to telcos what charter communications is to cablecos. "the bottomfeeder"

Re: no reason for them to upgrade

Qwest has cities and more densely populated areas in its region- though less than VZ or T- and from what I hear, they're getting killed in the cities and other places by cable.

Really, Qwest has several issues in addition to the population thing... the biggest being the company's massive debt (VZ and T aren't exactly debt-free either, but their size compensates), years of inept and corrupt management, and no cash-cow wireless division to prop up and help fund upgrades to the landlines.

Stock-wise, Q trades at a Price to earnings ratio of around 3. Comparatively, VZ is around 17, T 14- the market has absolutely zero confidence in Qwest right now, and the company's shareholders would likely be very annoyed at taking a risky route of massive capital expenses that might never cover the return.

Personally....

I'd rather a telco around my neighborhood like Qwest rather than AT&T.

For starters..there's nothing wrong at all with a 12 or 20Mb adsl connection. It's very competitive with the best that cable has to offer today.

And second? They're a more realistic company that's not trying to be all things to all people. There's nothing wrong with being a good telco provider who offers these kinds of adsl speeds. The thing that people just aren't buying from the likes of Grandma bell is the fact that they are trying to be all things to all people. Jack of all trades..and master of none in particular. Will you get 20Mb speeds off pewverse? Nope. Because they're too busy trying to be a TV company as well. What they wind up with instead is being a second rate provider across the board in virtually everything they offer. Ho hum HSI speeds. Questionable TV service. It just doesn't work as a good corporate strategy IMHO.

As for Qwest..ok..so money is tight. But, they dedicate it to what they can and realize that people do want fast HSI speeds. It's a good strategy and one that makes sense.

Everyone doesn't want or need any company to be their sole provider of everything. If qwest can provide good landline and adsl service..more power to them.

 Wanna be sold?

....because they were trying to remain lean for a potential sale.

What are they hoping for here? That one of the "big boys" will snap them up?

Re: vdsl to be discontinued in phx metro area

It's to bad, without interleave, Qwest has some of the lowest, most stable pings out there.

Missing out on another marketing opportunity.
