Who would you rather have running the country? The US government, that's already proven that they can't, or Google?

I'm leaning towards Google now cause when their spying on you, it's only to make a buck.

When does the whistleblower claim that Google works for NSA?

Should we now expect some Google whistleblower to come forward claiming that Google is supplying search info to the NSA in a "quid pro quo" for Google getting all the sat images for Google maps? But at least Google will be protected from privacy lawsuits.

AT&T must be really enjoying this announcement.

Uh... it's not Google spying for the Government.... It's the Government spy satellite spying for Google!

at&t is jealous!

Well at least tho it only takes pictures of public areas outside people's homes and businesses.

We think.

You've got it wrong TK. Google is the beneficiary of this Government's taxpayer built and funded satellite launch. What a croc!

And besides some money, what else is Google paying to the US for use of the satellite - some search data perhaps.

GeoEye is a commercial venture, right? What does taxpayer funding have to do with this? »www.geoeye.com/CorpSite/corporat···ult.aspx

The Gov't contracted with GeoEye and Google contracted with GeoEye. GeoEye thinks that it's good to have an exclusive deal with Google.

Build your own satellite and sell the data to whomever you want.

It isn't just a CONTRACT. The US funded its construction.

Re: When does the whistleblower claim that Google works for NSA?

Yes, the satellite was built with money that the U.S. National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency once owned, but they paid that money to GeoEye so that they could get real-time satellite imagery from GeoEye. Did you expect GeoEye to just give the government the data for free? Don't believe in the free-enterprise system? Would you be happier if the government simply took the information from GeoEye without compensation? Maybe, in your world, we should all just bow down to the government and give them all our earnings and just be happy to live. Have a good day comrade.

Yippie!!!

Now I can see my roof in greater detail!
I actually prefer MS MapPoint, where the satellite image is angled to where you can actually recognize landmarks.

It wasn't a Google satellite;but US spy sat funded by gov't

Google Satellite Successfully Launched

Actually the title of this item is misleading. It was a satellite built for and funded by the US Gov't spy agencies. Google gets rights to slightly lower resolution images and the money they pay will help underwrite the costs of the system.

What about copyright?

If google takes a pic of your property and uses it to sell something shouldn't you get a cut?

Re: What about copyright?

nope because except for a few cases their pictures are taken from public land, and in the case of orbit its nobody's land. if i could get space in orbit and had the money i could legally launch an imaging sat and snap photos of anyone's land i want and not have to pay them a cent.

Google World YEA

I certainly hope Google takes over the world. I believe we would have a much better sphere of inhabitance if it was controlled by Google rather than the whorish, self-aggrandizing idiots currently in every public office and running most major corporations.

And I like high resolution views of my roof.

Quality limitations

"GeoEye-1 will be able to capture images at .41 meters (16 inches) resolution in black and white and 1.65 meters (5.5 feet) in color, but under current government rules, the company can only offer the public half-meter (1.64 feet) images."

I would love to see the ".41 meters (16 inches)". That would surely be interesting.

Why has Google launched a satellite into space?

The cover: To provide Commercial Super High Definition Satellite imagery.

The plot: To begin a "legitmate" operation that sells images to public sector clients. However, the private sector (military, government agencies) will be the main focus, forming government contracts worth millions if not more.

Not that great resolution

Compared with the resolution of imagery that google already has on major cities from aircraft based cameras, this will be markedly underwhelming. However it will bring all remote areas of the globe up to a decent minimum resolution.
