Comments on news posted 2008-09-08 11:47:34: The second quarter was the worst quarter ever for DSL additions, with AT&T and Verizon barely adding 100,000 broadband customers, but collectively losing 220,000 DSL customers (130,000 for Verizon, 90,000 for AT&T). ..

Unable to compete?

DSL: $32/mo
Cable: $45/mo

DSL looks competitive to me.

DSL is an interim technology

Unfortunately, DSL is an interim technology. You simply can't send large amounts of data over long pieces of copper.

That said, I still have 6000/768 dry line DSL from AT&T.
I'm one mile from the C.O. and had to jump through hoops to make it stable (new wire to Network Interface, soldered all connections, new DSL modem, switched to interleaved profile).

Where DSL excels is in an instance such as U-Verse, where fiber feeds the neighborhood and copper each house within it. You can use copper for a 'big pipe' to distances of about 3300 feet (2/3 mile). That way you don't have to do major installs at each house-the most expensive aspect of FIOS and other FTTH schemes. You also get to put all your batteries in one place, since copper can power the voice telephone and DSL modem located inside the home.

Re: Geez....

My 10Mbps ADSL line is actually really great.

But if people want to get off it and move to cable, that's just more bandwidth for me!

Yep, dropping my $56/mth cable ISP for a $42/mth DSL connection with about the same throughput wasn't too tough of a choice for me.

dying phone companys

at&t could add many, many, many more customers just by expanding to their entire footprint, but they just worry about adding more speed to existing customers.if they kept that up cable is always going to spank them.they better get all they can with entire footprint.then add speed

there is still alot of rural customers that cant get dsl,and can always forget cable quote from charter in north Georgia

(we are not adding new customers even in new sub divisions they get together to pay for cable to get run to them)

that's what they told me if that's true then rural customers will never get cable, but they do have phone service which equals many dsl customers because that's all they can get unless they are lucky enough to get evdo or sat. in which i don't recommend to anyone although is better than dialup

3300 feet? That's pretty close to U-verse's limit for 19mbps VDSL. That's a pretty small pipe if you're trying to get HD video into a home.

I think AT&T's VDSL strategy is a good one, but they should have targeted 2000' and 50mbps per home. That would have given them so much more wiggle room to increase the HD quality, offer faster broadband, and more incoming streams.

yes lot of people.dsl stops 1700 feet from me,and IM about 3 1/2 miles from the co,and cable is 1 1/2 miles from me on the same road.to stop all the stupid comments such as just move or you decided to move there.I moved here in 1988 when there was no internet or cell phones, and this property has been in the family for many years, and was about to be lost when we moved here and took over payments, and even in 2008 we still have no cable, dsl, and no cell service

I agree. Hopefully they can squeeze a little more out with pair bonding, rather than higher compression.

Personally...

I'd have no problem with 3-6Mbps DSL.
The telco's are being too greedy, making a slower ADSL and even Uverse VDSL pricier than Cable HSI.

a) Bundled triple play(close)
TWC 6Mbps/VoIP/Digital TV (and analog) = $89/month (1 year)
AT&T: Lowest price bundle: $44/month Ufamily + $25/month 1.5Mbps VDSL + $30/month VoIP
AT&T: Best deal: $84/month U200+ 1.5Mbps Internet, $30/month VoIP with $200 cashback

b) ADSL: ADSL standalone... $30/month for 1.5Mbps, $40/month for 3Mbps. 10Mbps for $55 (Uverse)

Cable HSI: 1.5Mbps for $35, 6Mbps for $45, 10Mbps for $55
These are actually pretty competitive on standalone. Slight advantage to ADSL on the bottom end.

c) ADSL + Voice (POTS): $35/month for 6Mbps, $40 ($53 after fees) for POTS unlimited: $88, $83 for 3Mbps
TWC: Voice + HSI = $79.99 for 6Mbps, VoIP.

$32 = 1.5/256
$45 = 6/1

At least in my area.

Price isn't everything.

For me, 3mb/768k DSL for that vs 12mb cable for $10 more a month.

DSL is a dying technology.

Re: Personally...

I had POTS unlimited for quite a while, and was using DSL-Extreme (great service) for Internet, as it was as cheap, if not cheaper than AT&T, with better CS, and less B.S.
DirecTv was getting pricey, and TWC bundle made it worth my while.
I've been paying $40 POTS unlimited + $4.99 Canada = +$57/month on POTS.

Uverse has been available for +1 year, but not Uverse Voice, and they've recently canned new signups for Call Vantage (I guess they _really_ didn't want me as a customer)

OK by me...

I'd take "slowsky" DSL from Verizon over capped "high speed" cable from Comcast any day. Granted, I have FiOS now, but the DSL connection I used to have from Verizon was better than the cable connection I used to have from Comcast (but that was then and this is now). Frankly, I'd take dial-up over Comcast--I'll never, ever be a Comcast customer again.

Welcome to DSLReports!

Well, then there ya go friend.
No amount of posting here will change the fact that the service providers - DSL or cable - do not see you as profitable enough to extend their lines to provide you with something better than what you currently have(Sat, right?).

Sorry for the dilemma, but other than paying for the extension yourself(thousands of dollars I imagine), I doubt that the ISPs will do it.

As I stated last time... I have relatives that can't get anything better than 24kbps dialup.
Sat is not an option for them - LOS is blocked and the price is a hell of a deterrent even if it was doable.

So, with them as is with you - at this point in time, the only options are pay for it to be extended or... move. Right?

Is that with or without a POTS line?

Regardless, you can get 768Kbps/128kbps cable here for $14.99/month and 1.5Mbps/256Kbps for $29.99 ... The $14.99 is only a promo, but it's a 12-month promo that can be renewed. No cable required.

DSL was always the inferior product (distance issues, speed issues, PPPoE requirements) but, at least initially, had an edge because it wasn't a "node shared" medium and wasn't subject the slowdowns of cable.

Since the MSOs have started to perfect their DOCSIS rollouts, the cable product has improved significantly to the point where it is not the big issue Ma Bell would like you to believe.

I said the same thing about Verizon a few years back and I am glad to no longer get a bill from them anymore. Even though FiOS is now available at my home, I have not jumped ship yet, mostly because of my previously horrible experience and the fact that any savings would only be seen by committing to long contracts. I'm keeping my month-to-month billing with Comcast for now. Admittedly, I'm not much of a power user when it comes to the internet, but if things change, or Comcast ever harasses me about usage, I'm switching again.

Re: Unable to compete?

DSL: $35 for 6/768... but I don't have a POTS line so we'll have to include that - plus a contract.

Cable: $52.95 for 16/2 - no contract.

Hmmm... Bang for buck goes to cable
$3.31 per mb via cable
$5.83 per mb via DSL
I'll stick with cable.
