hacking is a pretty poor term

most people probably don't realize, but in a CO every ones line makes an appearance on the main rack and all a technician (or the FBI) has to do is walk over to where your line makes an appearance, attach a butt-in set (or some recording technology) and they can listen to every call you make. The idea that your phone line is private is sort of a joke in some respects.

Re: hacking is a pretty poor term

Nobody taps analog lines for wiretapping anymore. Its done digitally. The first thing that happens to your line when it enters the CO is goes into a digitalizer.

Thats called the main frame. The main rack is found at Hooters not in the CO.

Verizon is Stuck.

Having worked for a baby bell I soon learned the following: If the technician or any employee is a member of the union and has any seniority Verizon will find it almost impossible to fire them unless they goes to jail. If they try to fire the employee the union will threaten to strike. A trainer and union member employed by the baby bell that I worked for, was stopped twice for DUI. The company wanted to fire her because she was required to drive a company vehicle while on the job. The union insisted that she be rehabilitated. She was stopped again for DUI and the union took the same position. During her third DUI while driving a company vehicle she struck and killed a motorist that was changing a tire along the road. She was finally put in the slammer. In my opinion from experience, only way Verizon will be able to fire the technician is if he is prosecuted and goes to jail.

I failed to mention that this situation is nothing new except that in the Mid Nineties juvenile delinquents were responsible. They were caught plugging a telephone their neighbors network interface after school and calling 900/976 telephone sex lines. Unfortunately for them and fortunately for their neighbors they could not read. They connected their telephone to a network interface that had a notice: Cutting Line will summon police. They did not pay attention and did not realize their burglar alarm system had radio backup and did summon police. They were caught red handed.

In the mid-80's, when cordless phones were just becoming popular and cheap, a local home-improvement warehouse had one for 19.99. The catch was, it was before there was any security coding on them and they were all on the same frequency. You could take a handset, walk down the street in any neighborhood in town, and find dozens of responding bases. The bases would respond even if the phone was charging at the time. No telling how many fraudulent calls were made from that.

Actually in this case even if the guy is represented he more than likely be toast. While in most cases the Union will go balls to the walls to keep a techs job when it comes to stealing from either the company or the subscriber in most cases the Union will simply toss their hands up and say sorry bub you screwed up there's the door.

Funny! I almost did the same thing..

About 12 years ago I use to do the exact same thing except insted of calling 1-900 numbers. I would call my isp to get on the internet. Now you might be asking, Why would i want to do that, Well i used to lived in the boonies up in idaho at that time and there where no isp i could call with a local number and since i like to use the internet for 6 hours a day, You can see what kind for a phone bill that would be, what i would do is hike throught the woods and find the green telco boxes and hook up my laptop's modem to a line not being use. I was doing this for almost 18 months until an isp finaly got some local number in this area and the rest is history..

Its easy

A phone hack like what he was doing could be done with a rusty butter knife and a salvation army .50 cent phone.

Well, he'll be getting some quality sexual time in prison. I agree that his part is probably very soar from all the action but now he can worry about that gaping chasm he'll have.
