Welcome to the credit market failure

Even though good deals may be available.. unless you have cash, nobody's going to be purchasing other companies, unless its through government intervention, or chapter 13 liquidation.

Cash only

And even then they'll check the bills to make sure they aren't counterfeit.

Don't worry, Qwest doesn't/didn't even have the credit rating to buy them before the "september suprise" (no one watching the market should have been suprised )
now they're lucky the power company hasn't cut them off. (yet!)

Verizon would be great for a lucky few, and virtual abandonment for the rest of us.

I'd go for Windstream buying Embarq. The markets are similar, the network topology isn't that different, pricing of services are reasonably close. What's not to like?

Though if anyone buys it'll be interesting to see what happens to the network topology on the backbone side...if WS were to buy things would have to be switched from SprintLink to Level3. If Qwest bought (oh noes!) things would be switched onto their network, which, to be frank, itsn't that great.

I'd just see it as odd if Qwest actually did buy...Embarq is all over the place as far as places covered go, and Qwest...well...isn't. You've got a contiguous Bell buying what ends up being a bit of a CLEC...*shrugs*

Don't think Verizon would buy. But WS on the other hand...too bad they don't have 896k upload. At least download is good and they overprovision so you get what you pay for. Unlike...ahem...Qworst!

EXACTLY what I was thinking/hoping excpept I envisioning Las Vegas, NV instead of Naples, FL.

besides the credit crunch, of course, why shouldn't Verizon buy Embarq? with VZW's upcoming purchase of Alltel, they've shown that they want to become as large as the government will allow. And yes I know that wireless division is separate from the landline division, but they're both greedy all the same.

Please buy them.....someone.

In FL, these guys are the worst. Service & price.

I hear so much of one telco buying another. Last year it was TWTC and Qwest. Now it is Level3 and TWTC. It will be all one big telco in the end...just like it started.

To me it would make good sense for L3 to buy them so they get a bigger market share on the west coast of FL.

I hope not VZ...just got too big.

Verizon is reducing their wired footprint. Hawaii, NE states come to mind ? Increasing their wired coverage is for their major profit center now. Sorry, I seriously doubt your dream will come true.

Here! Here! Verizon is all around my area and a few towns are stuck with Embarq. I hope Verizon sucks this little area up quick.

Sounds a lot like Windstream now...I know of two companies that definitely have been absorbed into the big green truck as of late...I take this to mean you agree with my statement?

Here in Vegas, Embarq's DSL service is actually pretty good and reliable...The ONLY reason why I wouldn't mind having Verizon take over is for Fios.

 Ruh-roh

I sure hope Embarq doesn't get bought out...at least, not until they deploy a DSLAM at my fiber-fed remote terminal (HINT HINT!)...otherwise, I fear, I'll never get DSL, and will be stuck with my ever increasingly problematic EVDO service until I get so mad I switch to satellite or back to dial-up (or XOHM takes off and eventually becomes available here...which, given the speed at which EVDO was deployed, would probably take about...3-4 years, at best).

Too bad I wasn't some mega-rich billionaire; I'd purchase this company, just to save it from anyone else (then do a thing or two to improve service ).

that would be sweet, maybe Verizon could buy Embarq and Quest

that would be sweet, maybe Verizon could buy Embarq and Quest. I would like to see that too, seen a few posts on here of people hoping for FIOS in those areas. This might be the best time to do it too.

crazy idea or 2

Get this. What if a company like Clearwire had the capital for the buyout. Use the existing backbone then add towers where needed to get full coverage. CLEARBARQ?

Ok, here's another one. A japanese company such as KDDI who along with the 10mbps offers 100mbps symmetrical! Sure it would take awhile but they have proven they got their s@%&@ together.

Re: Please buy them.....someone.

My comments were not from a consumer side but a business. Half of my remote sites are in Embarq area and the service we get wtih them is less than to be desired.
In one case I have a 6 node MPLS with them and they have all the connections going back to one core because they cant get it to work when they plug a site into another core. Not good.
I have gotten DSL from them a couple of times for some events and they do know what they are doing there.
