We dropped Comcast trip play

because I was laid off last January.

We signed up for AT&T Naked DSL (1.5) for $37/mo. The triple play was going to go up to 120/mo, so we are saving a lot of money. Most of the stuff on TV is CRAP anyway - USA DOES have a lot of good, smart series, which we watch online.

We also use MAjicJAck (VOIP) for or phone service - not great, but it gets the job done.

The net is our lifeline to finding work - The closest library and/or job center is more than 5 miles away - It is MUCH cheaper to spend the $37 bucks on Internet service, then spending a small fortune in GAS to drive back and forth to some place to get access to check e-mail, search for jobs, do research for job hunting, etc...

I also use the internet to troubleshoot computer problems, PC repair/spyware/malware removeal/updates etc for people - which is about the only way I have of making any money for now.

SO for us - it is essential...

Re: We dropped Comcast trip play

Exactly. If you're unemployed, the Internet is essential in job hunting these days. Most companies don't accept mailed in or dropped off resumes, requiring applicants to either email or use the company's website to submit applications.

Email addresses are as important as phone numbers these days as well. While you can get a free email account almost anywhere, you still need a method to check your email.

Also with the internet, you can go far beyond what your local paper's classified ads have to offer. If you're interested in a company, you can check their website instead of hoping for a job listing or a random phone call to HR.

It used to be

that in the Sunday Atlanta Journal there were pages and pages of help wanted ad - this is no longer true. It seems virtually all the help wanted ad are almost exclusively ONLINE now. If anyone were stuck relying on newspapers these days, they will NEVER find work.

I know that another big thing to find work these days is "networking", but practically all my other prior jobs WERE actually obtained through help wanted ad's in the paper.

But:
I'm not so convinced that "networking" will help me - I'm 48, and though no one would admit to it, I am now "considered" an "older" worker, with all that entails (i.e. higher probability of actually needing a living wage) :-(

I'm also convinced that though I've sent out many hundreds of Resumes, there is quite a good probability that very few have actually been seen by human eyes - ahhh the wonders of technology.

It truly is a "brave new world" we live in today - sadly.

I hope this is true, if my neighbor drops broadband I will have to start paying for it.

call of order & depends on pocket rather than what to keep..

2nd to my mortgage, car payment, electric and heat, I want my PC's (& internet), phone & TV. Something to watch, listening to the news, ability to make a call in an emergency or make & receive regular calls, im'ing on the net, browsing the net, checking email, stocks, watching a show off the net, going to sleep to nick at nite, watching a good movie, a good online game and on and on. The cellphone.. its nice to have so one can go mobile with all its great features but to me wouldn't take the place of the above so its 3rd most important to me. A vacation, recreation, these things are nice but their more like 1 shot deals, you go on vacation 5 days, your home again, you go to an amusement park one day your back but no TV, phone or internet at home, i'd pull my hair out..lol.

Yeah, if I didn't have a job, I would have to make cutbacks somehow but we still want the link.
