NCTA

The NCTA commercials are doing a good job of informing the public the cable TV is the only solution to not loose your TV in February 2009. Thanks FCC.

Depends

What Channels are we gonna get?

I'd go for $10 if there were at least 35 basic channels that I liked.

I still think it's BS that when the transition occurs, I'll loose more than half of my channels, and the ones that I can get are frequently touchy. Also the fact that I can get a Dual-DSL account here and we have a FIBER vault less than 300 feet from the building (which has been there for at least 5 years), but still can't get digital TV.

You will get the local channels, and the PEG channels. Probbaly the home shopping network too.

Oh, but wait, that will be until Comcast requires you to rent a DCE or STB. $5/mo extra per tv. Oh, yeah, and all the channels you get will be so compressed, it won't be worth watching.

Free for how long?

I'm just going to have to assume that this is another one of their 'free for a year' deals, before the price balloons into the standard rate

Re: Depends

Why/when will Comcast require you to get a cablebox?

Yes thank you FCC for FINALLY doing this. The analog transmissions are a massive waste of bandwidth. If you still use analog broadcast services then please get your coupon for your gov't cheese STB and move along.

Re: Free for how long?

Straight from the article and Karl's write-up.

New customers who choose not to subscribe to additional Comcast services can get basic cable for just $10 a month for a full year.

Excuses

So is Comcast using the FCC as an excuse for telling users that they have to change over to digital cable?

Re: Depends

Why: Because analog channels on cable is also a waste of bandwidth/spectrum, and because they can make more $$ with digital services. Eg. Your TV viewing habits can be resold to data mining on digital, but not analog. You can be sold 'on demand' items, and extra services (Football/Hockey, etc).

When: Probably when Comcast decides to push switched digital

This is stupid

I would hazzard a guess that the VAST majority of those using only rabbit ears do so because there isn't any cable avilable where they live.

Re: Excuses

I wouldn't say excuse, more like an incentive. To Comcast's delight, the analog transition in Feb. will help Comcast get more digital cable switchovers. I fully expect them to take advantage of customer confusion.
Who wouldn't?

Re: This is stupid

Not really... many just don't want to pay for cable service.
Eg. My inlaws in the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles have never had cable. TWC is ~$15/month + franchise fees.
~$240/year can go elsewhere to get the SAME channels as 'basic'. Since I put them on the digital converter box, they actually have MORE channels (and they come in HD as well) than comes with 'basic' cable.

NOTE: 'Access basic $10-15/month' is not the same as the 'standard analog' package which gives ~60 channels.
Access basic is primarily the locals and possibly a few others tossed in (eg weather)

Re: Excuses

It will only help them for the customers they are willing or able to install coax to. If you read the numbers there are far more people who will be in broadcast AND wired "dead zones" come Feb '09 (sat. being the exception of course, and even then some people can't get sat due to geographic location, trees mountains, etc.)

Re: Depends

And Comcast is increasing it's rates by 500%.

When: Probably when Comcast decides to increase their price.

Re: Stick to rabid ears

You're forgetting about the old and or ingnorant people that think the converter required to continue OTA use is too complex a device. They'll choose Comcast.

So, your ex-Comcast analog was grainy?
That would suck, I imagine.

My current Comcast analog is pretty clear(for SD) - even when displayed on these 1920x1200 screens(point blank).

BTW, it's *Rabbit* ears, not rabid.

meh nothing big

This level of service they are talking about is called "Limited Basic" and includes local broadcast networks and local gov't/PEG channels.

What isn't clear is if you get them free with ANY new activation of HSI or are they only free if you sign up for HSI directly through Comcast at the regular rate of say, $42.95/year.

The cost of limited basic with HSI is right about the same as HSI without any cable service at all. So you might as well get limited basic+HSI anyway. Now if they are offering limited basic for free along with 42.95 internet, that's about a $15/month savings, not too bad. But after a year you'll pay another $15 a month for what you used to get free.

Re: Stick to rabid ears

Who knows dadkins they might just eat you T.V.

Well in my case mine might eat my house... (huge outdoor antenna amplified an all...)

If anything the Comcast HD was grainy and pixelated... they fixed that in our area by removing more analog channels...

Good thing too just cant wait till they get rid of all our analog's except locals...
