Qualcomm is making it easier as they will be coming out with CDMA/LTE (and HSPA?) chipsets and base station cards. It may just be a card upgrade in the cellsites rather than a forklift upgrade.
If it turns out to be relatively cheap and easy to migrate CDMA to LTE, don't be surprised if Sprint also goes LTE in 5-7 years or so when Verizon does. Sprint will probably be owned by someone else by then anyway to help fund the upgrade.
WiMAX could become their consumer products wireless division and LTE becomes the cellphone division. Just speculating... |

I think there's a lot of money to be made during the 2010 Olympics (international roaming) that Bell/Telus have been currently losing to Rogers. Rogers (GSM) does actually sell WiMAX wireless service as well 
I suspect there will be different overall uses for WiMAX and LTE though.
WiMAX may end up more in various devices, I suspect a lot of 'non retail' devices, but more industrial or b2b in addition to many niche products. HSPA/LTE are too tied into the old corp mobile industry at the retail level for handsets.

| Telstra announced yesterday their HSPA update will be finished by years end. 21Mbps downloads where active now. Lord knows what kind of backhaul is necessary to maintain that with heavy traffic or what the cost will be.
I have to admit the acronyms are very confusing in these next steps of wireless evolution. |

In fact, on the biz side it's promoted as 'WiMax in Home', for example.
So, how is it NOT WiMax?

Actually it is kinda. We are talking about the Inukshuk network jointly owned by Bell/Rogers. It is pre-WiMAX but really it is more or less exactly the same as the ratified fixed WiMAX standard. |

HSPA is an upgrade to GSM that in many cases only requires updated software/firmware on the backend equipment. It is NOT a forklift upgrade to GSM like it is to CDMA. Also, it IS backward compatible with GSM unlike CDMA.
Don't get confused by the fact it uses a W-CDMA air interface as others have pointed.

CDMA 'wavelength' ?
WCDMA / HSPA is a 'CDMA' based air interface which uses 5MHz physical channels, and ties into GSM's MAP core infrastructure (same infrastructure as GSM phones)
CDMA 1x is also a CDMA based air interface, but uses 1.25MHz physical channels and ties into ANSI core (i.e. same core as AMPS and TDMA used)
CDMA EVDO is a data only (IP based) air interface which uses 1.25MHz channels and ties into an IP backend.
Basically... UMTS/WCDMA (HSPA) and GSM utilize the same 'core' and SIM cards.
CDMA2000 (CDMA 1x/EVDO) utilize a different core.
LTE is an IP only based system which 'should' be able to bridge both CDMA EVDO and UMTS/WCDMA (HSPA) and even possibly WiMAX.

Qualcomm got their CDMA patents into GSM, and decided to just license patents than worry about market share, and making products, and *gasp* competing. |
