before the halt to the fttn deployment, i would see qwest vehicles parked along one of the surface streets that i would take to school.
while i am a cox sub, i am glad that qwest is pushing *a little* as it is keeping cox *a little* more honest (in terms of speed, but not price). however, if qwest really wants to compete in markets with an mso, they really have to give something special on price, because their speeds aren't anything to really write home about (especially with their limited availability).
i was looking to see if i could cut down the cost of my internet service by going with qwests 1.5meg tier and was *shocked* at the price they wanted. details as follows
*qwest high speed internet with office basic
*1.5m/896k tier
*purchase a simple dsl modem
*no bundle with qwest pots (dry-loop dsl) or long-term contract
price per month: $55.50
one time cost: $69.98
granted, i know the price is inflated with the lack of pots or a contract, but seriously!
when looking at qwest, we always see that they are only spending $300 million to upgrade *a portion* of their subs, but to really see how big of a deal, that needs to be compared to the revenue stream that qwest is taking in. if we have a proportion like that and can compare that against numbers from att and verizon, we can really see who is taking more of a financial hurt.

Cleveland, OH | AT&T pricing isnt much better for dry-loop. Actually roughly right around the same price then just find out that "can't" install it due to being too far away. Order POTS service along with it and BOOM! instant DSL. |

Qwest continues to cherry pick where they are installing fiber. They continue to ignore the north central area of Phoenix where many very expensive homes are unable to get higher than 1.5 down because of the very old copper. They should wise up to the reality that long established home owners are more likely to stay customers than the outskirts that were financed with the flaky mortgages. But then we know that living at high altitudes with lessened oxygen causes brains to slow down.

Here Dry loop is more than the POS POTS only because DSL starts at $10 per month and you can have a phone line for about $6.75 before "taxes and fees" but are still paying $50+ for a shitting 2Wire or Mot DSL modem when you can have a better one had at BestBuy for the same price and never have to worry about the telco having remote access to it. |

$40 for 1.5/896? How about no...
$47 for 5/896? Not for me either...
I'm in a college town where people would value a decently high speed connection for a reasonable price. The only provider who offers such a connection here is Comcast IMO...aside from upload speed issues, Qwest here is not FTTN and I haven't definitively heard that they'll upgrade this area any time soon. I'd be willing to switch to the $57-a-month 12/896 Titanium plan or at least the 7/896 ADSL2+ mid-tier offering if Qwest offered it here, but they don't, so I use Comcast.
What's funny is that the $175 per customer upgrade cost could be recouped in about 18 months by that customer choosing the 12 Mbps tier over a lower one, or the 7 Mbps ADSL2+ tier over 1.5 over the course of 24 months or so. Or look at it this way: that $175 upgrade could actually bring more Qwest customers on board with a more expensive ADSL2+ plan, so at $57 per month you're looking at a dang quick ROI.
Why they're only aiming for 40% FTTN penetration I just don't know...in non-FTTN areas the price for DSL is high enough compared to cable that using the MSO instead of the telco gives extra speed at a minimal price increase. Not good for customer retention... |

I dont know if this means anything but up north here Around the Davis SL County Line there has been alot of Qwest, SCI Trucks around. I have seen them as far southeast as 2100 south and 2300-2400 East Foothill Area. I talked to someone who lives in bountiful and they told me they were looking at some huge cabinet that looked kind of like a refridgerator in a neghiborhood. I dont know whats going on but its something. I dont know if this means anything or what any ideas? or anyone on the boards have any idea really? |

| yeah I see them putting something like that in on 700 East and around 7800 South (actually around 7700th south).
Right by Hollywood Video in the Harmons shopping center. Though being that is far from where I live I doubt that means much to my neighborhood.

With those 12mbps and 20mbps do they still use interleave? i know that Billings Area will probably be one of the last places they will put down fiber but im still wondering. Right now i have Cable Montana 5/384 and qwest only offers 1.5/3 meg services here now. |
