Clarification?

I thought Motorola was getting out of the cell phone handset business?

Or does this device not count at as cell phone, but rather a PDA which happens to have cell phone functionality?

lower expectations

the bar for "smart phones" is so low, that anything released by companies is great stuff.. bad thing is with the economy the way it is, dont' expect big sales numbers especially with a fat profit margin earned on each handset... along the lines of how Apple gouges its customers.

Could this be

Motorola could take back some serious market share if they get this right. I'm looking forward to the G1, and i guess the G1.1.

yuck

I would wait like a year before I decided to go with another motorola. The last two phones I had from them have been crap. My razr sucked and I went through three of them then I got the Sidekick slide they make and it has horrible battery issues and turns off and on randomly.
For the foreseeable future I won't be purchasing anything from motorola.

Re: Clarification?

The plan was to split Motorola into two companies, one of which would solely be the handset unit and the other would be everything else. The hope was that someone would buy the handset division of Motorola off of them for some money, but with the financial markets being what they are I don't think anyone's going to be buying a risky debt-ridden struggling cellphone company anytime soon (they are still the best-selling handset company in the US, but not profitable), so I don't know if Moto is still planning on the split.

The Razr (and even my Razr2) had tons of issues. Pure junk.

My Moto Q9c is rock solid though. Easily the best phone I've ever owned ... and I've owned a LOT.

It'd be a very possible form factor for a future Motorola Android smartphone though- IIRC the MOTOMING phones they sell in China use that form factor and a (non-Android) variant of Linux as the OS.

Yes.

Nothing has surfaced online to give us an idea of what the new phone will look like, although it will reportedly resemble Motorola's Krave ZN4 (pictured above).

Re: yuck

I've had better luck from Motorola than I have from Samsung

Past phones:
Motorola
Motorola Timeport P7328i (excellent, but arcane menu)
Motorola V505 - still works, antenna is broken though
Motorola RAZR - +2 years and still running
Morotola V3xx - worked well until it was lost/stolen

Samsung X426 - nice inexpensive phone, garbled calls
Samsung E316 - nice phone, non standard power adapter, garbled calls
Sassung ZX-20 - looks nice VERY non standard power adapter, drops calls (3 warranty replacements didn't help)

What's wrong with the economy? Recently a homeless guy saved himself getting crushed in a dumpster by using his CELLPHONE. The economy is so bad, even our homeless have cellphones.

Funny how different people have different problems.

My 1st razr is still going, used by my wife.
I use a krzr every day - never had a problem.
I've had Moto cellphones for years - iDEN, CDMA, GSM, TDMA, analog(!). The only one that every crapped on me was dropped onto the concrete driveway very hard.

Maybe you need to stop putting them through the wash or dropping them in the toilet or whatever

I guess people nearly getting crushed in dumpsters isn't disturbing enough?

Ummm OK, the article I read said he was. I never actually called the guy on his cell phone to verify the story.

TRENTON, N.J. — A man who fell asleep in a trash container awoke inside a garbage truck that was about to compact its load but was saved after making a frantic cell phone call to police, authorities said.
...
"He's not homeless but is unemployed and trying to make ends meet," Pousak said. "If I was him I would go to church and play the lottery, because today was his lucky day."
