| | Will I need to upgrade my Linksys Cable Modem? My Linksys Cable modem is about 2 yrs old (docsis 2.0 compliant). Will I need to buy a new modem to get these newer speeds? Do the new, faster service speeds require docsis 3.0? If so, can my Linksys modem be upgraded (firmware) that will work with the faster speeds? | |

Your current D2 modem can do this. All you need to do is probably power cycle after the new speeds make their way to your area.

Yes, unless you have the Comcast phone service, then you need to hit the reset button, as pulling the power cord only will do nothing as the battery will keep the modem on.
(There are people who reset these modems by pulling both the battery and power cord, but personally, I find hitting the reset button on the back a lot easier.)

Sure, you'll be able to get your email attachment in 1.2 seconds instead of 2.7 seconds - but good luck downloading any video files.
I am starting to hate Comcast more and more these days.. it used to be a passive "they suck" - which is now turning into "why the hell am I not in Fios territory?!?".

| sweet That's good news, hopefully they will lower the price on the 50/10 tier a bit and deploy it in North Texas soon (FiOS heavy area). Then Verizon will have to lower their 50/20 tier to a more affordable price and I can get it. | |
|
| | lag They can deploy docsis 3.0. , 4.0 , 5.0 . verizon will always be one step ahead. | |
|
| | 6/1 to 12/2 for free?
Too sweet!!! | |

| | Verizon is superior because it is Fiber to the Home
The real story here is that Comcast has a dilemma: The more it devotes spectrum for data the fewer number of HDTV channels it can offer. Verizon on the other hand because of its GPON fiber to the home architecture provides video on a separate wavelength and has an enormous pipe for data. They can significantly increase data speeds on the fly. That's why the same HD channel on FIOS looks better than on the Comcast network. They have the bandwidth so they don't need to compress as much. I don't see how Comcast will be able to compete head to head with fiber to the home in the long term.
|
| | Comcast prices Why is comcast so much cheaper for everyone else? I live in Central Illinois, and for me to just get Comcast Cable internet it would be 80 a month for 16 speed. No tv, no phone, just internet. | |

| | | | Re: Comcast prices True, however there are 2 dsl companies in this area, and neighbors of mine are paying $43 for the same service. I don't understand why they are charging so much for new customers. | |

12/2 $ 42.95
16/2 $ 52.95
Just 4+ down, same up for an extra $ 10.00
This is a really bad move. They should re-think about it. Many people will downgrade, no doubts.

| | | K3 join:2008-05-06 Kankakee, IL 1 edit | yea but what are their speeds? anywhere close to 16Mb? If not then it cant be considered as competition, thats why the higher prices, same story in my town, at&t is the only competition and their fastest speed is 6/768 | |

SlyLoK join:2007-10-19 Sugar Grove, VA | Tiring I am honestly getting tired of these companies increasing speeds and at the same time leaving large portions of the areas they are supposed to cover untouched. And the whole " unprofitable " bs just gets old.
Kudos to anyone who can get the new tiers anyway.

| | comcast docsis 3.0 Thats great about the speed, but what about the number of hops it takes to get out of comcast to the internet??? Do a trace route and you'll find about 10 hops in comcast alone. Can anyone tell me why is?? | |
|
| | caps need to go up If I'm getting 50 down I'm gonna download Blueray movies instead of DVD-9, and HD Videos and contents rather then lower quality. This will add up very quickly, and its not a matter of me being greedy. | |
|
| | Fool me once, Fool me twice, Not gonna fool me thrice I went to Comcast's new "Is it here yet?" part of their site, and even though it claims it's not here yet for my area, people I know [who live all over my Comcast coverage (new and old houses) area] are already getting 2mb up, while I'm still stuck at 786kb, and I'm paying for performance plus while their only playing for performance and I'm also closer to the Comcast CO then them also. Also, this isn't gonna be able to compete with Verizon's fios option. | |
