| Great...
Now we're going to hear about VRAD drive-bys. Funny thing is there will be little sympathy out there for these victims. I've often thought about what I'd do if one of these were put onto the easement in front of my house.
Can't wait to see the first rap video where people get their street creds against the mean VRAD! -- "For duty and humanity!" - Moe Larry and Curly (MEN IN BLACK, 1934)...These are the guys we have in Congress |

They can stick it on my lawn only if they provide me with unlimited fiber access to it with free internet for as long as it remains their. |

1 edit | FTTH for the win :)
FTTH would not have had all these silly lawsuits and delays. No need for big cabinets on front lawns and no distance problems either and less maintenance.
FTTH for the win
PS: Harder to shoot fiber as well. |

| they have good placement in my area
In our area (benton, AR) All of them that I have seen so far are placed away from peoples yards. Well I think there is one close to a yard. But anyways ATT did a much better job with planning in our area than in others and I have not heard one person complain about the VRADS anywhere around here. Oh wait Charter did come to the city during planning stage to try to stop the deployment of the service, in interest of the community of course. :P |

| reply to mlundin I certainly hope that nobody is shooting VRADs with a high powered 30-06 rifle.
Note to people shooting VRADs. Do not shoot them with high powered rifles. You want to kill the VRAD not your neighbors. Any environment in which a VRAD is installed is far to dangerous to be firing a high powered rifle. You would want to use a 12 gauge shotgun with 00 buckshot at close range. This is also dangerous, but not nearly as dangerous as using a high powered rifle.
Know your environment and the background before discharging any firearm. Where will that high velocity projectile go if you miss your target or if it over penetrates the target? What about ricochets due to the fact that you a firing at a metal object?
It's bad enough that you will be going to prison when caught for shooting the VRAD and the last thing you want is to be going to prison for killing someone.
It's best just not to be shooting the VRADs in the first place! |

| Property Values
I see these VRADs as a good property value, because if I was looking at neighborhoods for a new house to buy, I would more than likely buy a house with a VRAD nearby, I don't see why these VRADs would drive down property values, if anything they'll raise property values. |

It will only raise the value if the buyer is a geek. Most of the housing market buyers are not geeks so therefore the value is less. |

1 edit | Karl, how do you know that a VRAD was shot?
It does not say anything in the article provided by your link that a VRAD was shot.
Cable Equipment Damaged By Bullet »www.theday.com/re.aspx?re=427448···7dd4298b
Did you call the local police and ask them if it was a VRAD that was mortally wounded or did you call AT&T and ask them about it?
Are you just speculating that it was a VRAD?
I guess it makes for a better story if it were a VRAD that was shot.
Could it have just been a cabinet where AT&T connects a bunch of wires together?
. .
Edit
This is another article from TheDay.com about the shooting.
Communications Device Struck by Bullet in Gales Ferry »www.theday.com/re.aspx?re=1993c3···ea1052fd
"It was later learned that a high-capacity communications device owned by AT&T, and located at that intersection, had received significant damage due to a bullet strike. The device, which houses about 14,000 wires, was destroyed, police said."
14,000 wires sounds like an awful lot of wires to be connected to a VRAD. |

| What is the problem?
Look, every company has its own views on how they should deploy some sort of broadband. AT&T chose FTTN. Get over it people! A VRAD is not going to go in front of every bodies house or near it at least. Yes they are huge but guess what they service many people in the neighborhood. I have driven by plenty of neighborhoods where I see that little green box sticking out of the ground in FRONT of people's homes. I have seen green cabinets triple the size as well. Do people complain about those? It still looks funny right in the middle of the yards. But whatever. I don't have U-Verse in my area anyways. |

Pistol rounds wouldn't penetrate it. Buckshot would have a hard time. A 30-06 wouldn't overpenetrate it.
I hope this jerk gets caught ans has to pay the 40k+ or so that it costs to set a VRAD. |

As opposed to the way most field electronics were placed for the past 20-30 years? CEVs are seldom used and only when they're the best choice. |
