| A little context, FWIW The URL listed is for a Speed Test site used by our technicians. They go to that URL and can jump off to the closest regional datacenter to their market in order to run a speed test (many local services are distributed down to these regional sites). As we are rolling out DOCSIS 3.0 speeds nationwide from 2008 - 2010, we located a speed test server in each one of those regional sites and labeled them as such. There is not a correlation between the regional sites (since we're in each of them) and the markets that we'll be launching in 2008.
Also, the fact that there is a special speed test for DOCSIS 3.0, is simply a reflection of our testing that special speed tests were needed when a customer has such a great amount of bandwidth. I would venture that the many public speed test sites may end up bandwidth constrained due to the bandwidth they purchase being limited (ex: how many simultaneous 50Mbps tests could be performed at the same time, as compared to 10Mbps tests).

Now, don't get me wrong, I would love to see those prices, but it just isn't going to happen.
FiOS: 20/5 - $52.99 20/20 - $62.99 50/20 - $139.99
*These prices are with home phone service on top of this.
Comcast: 16/2 - $52.95 22/5 - $62.95 50/10 - $139.99
I would say that FiOS is a better bang for the buck, but considering I'm in Qwest territory it just won't happen as they are a joke at best. -- Duct tape is like The Force it has a light side and a dark side, and it binds the Universe together

Outside NY Metro (or the northeast corridor, where the majority of fiber is laid) things get more expensive due to limited infrastructure. Taking slower upstream into consideration... 50/10 should be $79.. However, competition sucks outside this market so, your stuck.. unless you build it yourself *OR MOVE*

@spcsdns.net | Cap non sense If they raise the speed limit to 100 MPH on the freeway you take to work, do you drive more or just get there faster ?

@comcast.net
| Re: Cap non sense Well, the way I look at it is this: In dialup days, it would take what, 10 minutes to download a 1 meg file, an hour to download a 6 meg one? Now under optimal conditions on the 6 meg tier, you can download the same file in 6 seconds. Not only are you not tying up the network for an hour, by getting your file faster, the network is available for others to use. The problem here is upload speed. It doesn't matter if you have a 50 mb connection on your node and you happen to be the only one on at the moment. If Aunt Mary is sending you a file and her upload speed is 256k, you're going to see slightly less than 256k due to TCP overhead, but near 256k will be the max speed no matter how fast your download speed is. Asymetric speeds should go the way of the dinosaur. In an ideal world, faster speeds will increase network efficiency because people would spend less time on the network, but we don't live in an ideal world do we? People WILL find a way to use whatever speed is offered to them. Some will argue no speed can be too fast. Either way, in a few years as faster PC's come out and more and more appliances etc. are hooked to the internet, they'll just have to raise speeds again. If there were a way to block all the spam and viruses from ever getting onto the network in the first place, that would also free up bandwidth. Popups and flash ads need to go too. Waste of space IMHO.

I remember when someone automated the message SIGs on Compuserve (an old pay-by-the-minute service). The automation would jump online, download the messages, and go offline. Then you wouldn't be chewing up per-minute charges.
Result: Bills went down? NOPE! Instead, people joined even more SIGs. -- Robb Topolski -= funchords.com =- Hillsboro, Oregon More features, more fun, Join BroadbandReports.com, it's free...

| Soon enough, all of them
I think most areas have the plans for which cable spectrum to be set aside for docsis 3 rollout. FWIW, Comcast has tentative plans to have it in markets that are 750+ MHz by summer '09.
I'm posting this because I'm on an 8/2 plan (powerboosted I know) but this is still done with docsis 1.1, the difference for most who choose these newer plans will be that their speed isn't temporary.

| They can take their time here..... Plenty of speed where I'm currently at. Probably won't even notice the boost once it does happen-since most sites don't send files at the full speed I have now. I'm not a downloader, nor a gamer, so I could care less.
Take your time, guys Keep the uptime going, so my weather station can keep uploading like it has been. That is more important to me than more speed.
