| Price/performance ratio too high
DSL for years cost less than cable, offering a better value ratio for many consumers and prosumers.
Not the case these days. In my area, Comcast offers price competitive cable now, and static IP service with better speeds.
AT&T needs to drop the DSL pricing if they want to keep the marketshare. |

| Closer look at DSL
Although the heady days of 500k DSL net adds may be over, at least for 3Q08, they are reversing the dramatic slowdown in DSL. They only had 34K net DSL adds, but in 3Q08, they had 148K. I think this could be driven in part by wireless/DSL bundles, sans a voice wireline.

| Slow economy
Analysists who thought AT&T U-verse would miss their target probably didn't think it through.
A slower economy may very well slow deployment, but the big stock market crash didn't happen until almost October. At a minimum, AT&T would at least finish out whatever they had started so they can begin to recoup their investment. That sort of pinch is something we'd see more next year.
However, more immediately, people are looking to save a quick buck, and AT&T's generous promotions do just that. They're essentially offering you $200 just to give their services a try, without a contract. AT&T retentions was also offering very aggressive incentives to keep existing customers.
AT&T is no longer offering the first free month of TV, and from what I've read, they've significantly clamped down on the retentions promos. That's a good sign that things are going as planned. They've managed to get their Total Home DVR going and it looks like faster internet speeds and signficantly more HD channels are coming in November. They may not have the most cutting-edge network, and the system still has bugs to be worked out, but overall things are looking pretty good for AT&T U-Verse right now. -- AT&T U-Hearse Your funeral. I agree. Neither are 'cheap', however, cable has become fairly competitive (at least here in SoCal) for the basic price.
Eg. (1 year) TWC: 'All the Best': $89.99 - 6Mbps/512kbps - Digital 'Choice' and Analog TV (as many TV's as you can attach) - Unlimited VoIP
AT&T: 30/30/30 (only where VoIP exists) - 1 year - U100 (1 TV) - Uverse VoIP - 3Mbps/1Mbps
The problem with AT&T is.. they STILL don't have VoIP service available, adding another $25-$30 to the overall price. -- Canada = Hollywood North |

| Asheville area
I noticed driving around the Asheville, NC area over the weekend that there was a brand new big metal box near where my mother lives. It does not appear like the regular boxes that have been used for DSL before. In fact, it appeared there was already a DSLAM at that site before. In fact, the new box was much bigger, the size of a refrigerator or even larger. It appeared very similar to pictures I have seen of AT&T VRAD's for U-Verse. I wonder if this means that AT&T will be offering U-Verse in the Asheville area within the coming months and year. |

I would rather be in a Verizon area than this crappy AT&T service with very limited speeds (3Mb is the max I can get and it took some help from people here to get that). Cable is not any better here, cost is higher and less reliable. -- There's no place like ~ |

| Hmm Dsl addons slowing down... Hmmm Oh... They aren't building out dsl anymore... Its all Uverse/dsl capable equipment now.. And from what i've seen, they are only putting it in places with cable/dsl service already in place... NO build out deployment equals "much" less DSL subscribers.. I mean hell man its basic math... Deploy in areas that aren't serviced by anyone and BAM you get the market there first!... I'm seriously starting to believe that there are some major tards in the mix screwing things up with over guessed plans.
In short, want more subscribers? Deploy to areas not service by anyone yet, and you will get them.. Till then hold back the fake tears of "lack of interest" and get to work! |

We'll have to see how many are going to 'keep' service in the coming months. This is becoming a pretty bleak quarter, and I don't expect things to turn around until spring/summer.

I just had one installed at my old office, highest tier is 3Mb/386Kb for $40 for 1 dynamic IP. I had to talk the CSR in to that price from the new $52 rate for the pro tier. Now that's pathetic!
ATT's website still shows the 'old' rate of $35, but you'd have to get full on phone service on the line to get that. ATT also tried to stick me with their $135 phone drop installation fee to put a phone jack 3 inches from the MPOE, at least the tech found the line for the drop I ran for it. Plus I have to deal with ATT's typical problems of only completing orders half way, totally wrong, or not at all; they managed to only get the order in for having the POTS line and totally lost the one for having DSL turned up on it. |

In their analyst call, they cited an attach rate of "over 85%" for U-verse broadband. That means that about 200k of the 232k U-verse video adds also added U-verse broadband.
Total broadband net adds were 148k.
That means that vanilla DSL had a net loss of about 52k. (Disregarding WildBlue.)
OK, that's better than 2Q, when the same math puts DSL with a net loss of about 100k, but I wouldn't say that the slowdown in DSL was by any means "reversed". "Attenuated", perhaps. |

I can say first-hand that I have done U-Verse installs in a semi-rural neighborhood & town where before AT&T installed the VRAD & the Fiber to it, there was NO existing Cable OR DSL. For TV, these people had OTA Antennas, or had to go with one of the Dishes, and for Internet, it was either Dial Up or Satellite Internet. AT&T installed the VRAD, well more people could get hardwire based TV & internet, at HSI speeds.
U-Verse deployment is NOT limited to Current DSL and/or Cable green areas. |

| I don't want to give anyone false hope either. I don't know if U-Verse will ever be as universal as, say, POTS phone service.
My point was more that it is already turning some old cable & dsl dead zones, to Green for land-line based TV & HSI services. |
