So how will Verizon answer the loss of copper subs?

Price increases and new junk fees. But it looks like putting customers over a barrel with endless crap fees works give their profit increase.

Re: Why upkeep DSL when....

Especially when they intend to switch to an all fios network. It requires less maintenance then dsl and the regular copper network. SO long term they save on how many employees they need to keep the network up.

They do not intend on switching to an all FIOS network. When will that get through to some of you. If you live in the big city, upscale neighborhood, or a politically favorable area, you may get it. Those of us in rural areas will never see it.

If Verizon gets their way, you won't be seeing big Red as your ILEC for long either- the long-term plans appears to be to convert what's profitable to FiOS, and sell off the rest to someone else, ideally with huge tax benefits.

Nah. It's an all FiOS network. if you look back they've talked about running xDSL to rural areas instead of fiber :/

I live next to Lawrence, MA, one of the 5 poorest places in the US. They were wired for FIOS before we were. Does this fall under "politically favorable"? In that case, what doesn't fall under one of the three.

I expect them to install their network everywhere they can get an adequate ROE. Would you expect otherwise?

Lets not forget

While Verizon is pushing FIOS to SINGLE OCCUPANCY HOMES, all I get in my APARTMENT mailbox is Verizon offer “amazing fast” 768K/128K. At the same time, Comcast offered me an upgrade to 8Mbps tier. MDU FIOS still vaporware and I will be switching to digital voice. Can it be Verizon putting all its attention to fiber and neglecting its copper customers is the reason for loss of DSL customers? Nah says the cult of fiber.

Uh, I thought it was commonly accepted that Verizon was neglecting its DSL infrastructure to push out FiOS faster?

I'd expect their VZW division is carrying the company.. When they are charging 20 cents PER text message for no-plan customers is just highway robbery. I remember reading how much it costs per MB of data was huge!

DSL is slow, FIOS is much better

Why would I get DSL when the fastest tier is 3mb? I had Verizon for home phone service and with the Caller ID, Call Waiting, Long Distance, etc... that we wanted, the bill was about $60 a month. With Comcast I have the triple play bundle and the phone with all of those features (plus web access) is $33 a month (will be $39 a month) which is cheaper. Plus Comcast HSI with Powerboost is MUCH FASTER than crappy DSL.

BUT on the flipside, if Verizon invested in a FIOS network in Berks County, PA, I would go with them. Verizon knows they need to spend money to make money. Build it and we will come. I'd love to have 100 HD channels and Verizon Fios TV, plus sustaned up and downstream speeds. Multi Room DVR, advanced DVR software with PC connectivity, reliable service and all in a triple play bundle. Verizon do you hear me? Build it and I will come!

Re: Why upkeep DSL when....

Depends how you define poor. $1,100 of per capita income goes A LOT farther in Texas than it does in Mass. My info is dated, I'll admit, but I don't think its gotten any better over there. At least not according to the daily police log in the local paper.

Verizon nerds! Question

What if I want to go hard core and tell the verizon sales people I have a fiber optic nic card in my pc.

Could I possibly be able to still use it and bypass all that extra junk that they might try and rent to me?

Anecdotely

90% of the DSL I take out in the CO are customers moving to Fios.

No, I'm sure ROE plays into most of the reason an area get FIOS, but I'm sure politics also does. Perhaps Lawrence, MA is in the district of some hotshot politican, or maybe they are deploying there to avoid charges of red lining. All I can tell you is that FIOS will never reach 100% of Verizon's copper customers. The only way Verizon will be 100% FIOS is if they are able to sell off areas that they don't plan on deploying it to.
