wow

Didn't know centurytel had that kind of money....seems to me if they waited a little longer, like after XOHM fails, they'd get it cheaper.

Embarq doesn't have anything to do with XOHM. Sprint is the one with XOHM. They are separate companies.

Again?

It wasn't that long ago that Embarq popped up..and now they're going to be changing the name again. Cue round 3 of "Your ISP has changed names!"

hey, when you charge people $30-40 for 1.5mbps DSL YOU TOO can hoarde back a lot of money to go buy failed companies.

This merger won't happen. Once the dems take office FCC is going to get shitty. The corporate ecosystem has been perverted far too long by letting these mergers happen while the debt is just shifted around. Let that turd Embarq go under and let other companies buy up the pieces they want. That is how real competition happens.

Re: Again?

I have a friend who is an Embarq customer. He had dialup for a long time before he got DSL from them. I hope this doesn't mess up his service. He has no other choice where he is located.

It looks like Centurytel is buying Embarq, but when you look at who will own the combined company, it is really Embarq taking over CenturyTel.

after closing Embarq shareholders are expected to own about 66 percent of the combined company.

Re: Again?

All the more reason to not use your isp's email domain if you can avoid it. I remember when Comcast too over AT&T Broadband and all my neighbors were complaining about changing their email from @attbi to comcast.net. As long as I have my own domain I don't really care what they call themselves as long as the service works and they don't prevent me from hosting things like my email somewhere else.

Re: Again?

Waitaminute, isn't CenturyTel the company that still has 1.5 Mbps service in most areas for a lousy price? Or is their 36/8/10 Mbps service rolling out to other places now?

This just comes as a shocker. Wonder what Windstream is gonna do now.

In my area Centurytel offers phone, unlimited local and long distance, along with 10/768 internet for 79.99 + taxes. For the first 12 months I received a $10 discount off that price for a 12 month commitment.

Re: Again?

Ah that's right. WS will buy Frontier, creating a bigger Windstream. CenturyTel will acquire Embarq, leaving us with ???

n the end, three baby bells, two rural ILECs and a partridge in a pear tree.

Re: wow

Upon relfection, Embarq owning the majority of the company is a good thing. Their speeds are at least decent across the footprint, and the company won't be fiber-phobic.

Centurytel is running FTTH in new developments, along with rumor of some testing of FTTH in older service areas

While Embarq shareholders will own a majority the entity, it looks like at least most of the CenturyTel board of directors will keep their jobs and will run the merged company, not Embarq's. One wonders how the merged entity will be branded.

Re: here you go right off there websight!

Why because they don't give it away? CenturyTel customers are in some very rural areas where the per customer prices are much more expensive than in urban areas.

iansltx_

@spcsdns.net

Windstream serves similarly out-in-the-boonies areas, and they have 12 Mbps service at rates competitive with cable, across most of their footprint.

Also, interesting to know, about the FTTH deal. Guess it's similar with all these rural ILECs: fiber in new developments, copper in old.
