Comments on news posted 2008-11-05 12:31:29: Cable operators have been outperforming their telco counterparts the last few quarters, largely thanks to true triple play bundles and faster speeds luring customers from the telcos. ..

small pipe, pots taxes, and high rates are deal breakers....

it's obvious the loss by telco is obvious why...

small pipe (at&t), high rates (verizon) POTS taxes/fees (both). telcos need to do a better job in competing if they want customers. FIOS & Uverse on their terms (adverse to the customer) just doesn't cut it anymore.. the honeymoon is over.

I agree.
The 'main' reason that I picked Cable over Uverse was the bottom line.

TWC: 'All The Best' $89.95 package
6Mbps/512kbps Internet
Digital TV Choice or Variety - 1 STB
Analog TV (as many sets as I want)
VoIP unlimited

AT&T Uverse '30/30/30' = $90 package
3Mbps/1Mbps (competitive)
Digital TV U100 - 1 STB
VoIP Unlimited

AT&T loses out because of the following:
1. VoIP isn't available yet in SoCal ... STILL. AT&T claimed that they'd sell me POTS for $30, but once you add in all the extra fees imposed on POTS, its not worth it.
2. No analog sets - gotta pay extra for each set.

You can't really blame the telcos for most of those taxes & fees (even though a few of them are totally bogus)--the govt has done a really great job there (/sarcasm). You can, however, blame the telcos for how they've broken them out--something they lobbied for (line items) so as to "prove" just how much your bill is not for actual service, which has had entirely the opposite effect that they wanted. The cablecos bills are quite simpler--few line items. The fact that the cableco phone service makes long distance vs. local irrelevant is also a simplicity factor. Will the telcos learn anything from this? Not likely. Will the govt? Very unlikely.

You can blame the telco for scrapping VoIP (Call Vantage), and not allowing for Uverse Voice in Uverse markets.

Yeah, totally... I didn't mean to imply that there weren't other significantly stupid things that telcos have done... and will do... repeatedly (not that cablecos are exempt from being magnificently stupid, too.

Hmmm...

And despite losing (or at least not gaining new) subscribers, AT&T decides that implementing a metered usage model (at least in Reno) and suggesting that all of their customers might soon have to follow, is a good idea...

Telco's grew up in regulated markets.

The government guaranteed them profits. The were treated as utilities. Now they want to act like they got where they are like companies that had to compete for markets - until they realize they don't know how to operate like a true for profit company. They now want to do whatever they want to but expect the government to rein in their competition.

Telco's can't compete, don't know how to compete and will never be able to compete without the government covering their backs.

Re: Make cableco's share their lines!

or how about they make you let me use your car. its simple the cable companies used there own money to build the system. the phone company used our money to build the system. hell in pennsylvania we paid verizon like 15 years ago to run fiber to every house and we still dont have it. even tho the cable company could technically tap into that free money they dont. because if they do they then they could be made to share the lines. the telephone companies could do the exact thing and not have to pay the fees. start a cable company or phone ccompany and build it with private funds and guess what. they dont have to share or pay the fees. but with free money also comes regulations of sharing. not sharing is a reward for not taking free money. the fees are just a way for the goverment to get our money back that we all also have to pay. the cable companies are just smarter and dont apply for the money. that way they are not saddled with the extra fees and they dont have to share the lines. once you took what amounts to billions of dollars you simply cant say im done with taking it so i dont want to share.

It's obvious why.

Time Warner Cable is one of the best ISPs in the U.S. at this moment. They provide 15/2 Mbps in many markets. I pay $40/month for this service where I live.

They have no bandwidth caps. There is no throttling. Basically, they provide good service and leave us the fuck alone to use it as we desire.

If and when they start instituting these foolish caps they've been trialing in some backwater town in Texas, they can expect their subscriptions to plummet along with AT&T and Verizon.

na, comcast is the best. they throttle after some ungodly amount but who really cares. not me thats for sure. 16/2 for 43 dollars a month with 50/5 coming this year. very few people reach it and i sure dont care about those that do.

Re: Let's not forget

pay for what you use. no problem here with that. let the market determine what that rate is. the USA was built on that theory. the internet will never die. in fact the internet could survive just fine without these people that think they deserve everything for nothing. you know how you dont leave your lights on because it gets expensive. well turn the dam computer off and dont download everything if you cant afford it. i dont want to pay one nickel more because some people want to abuse a service. think about it. im 100 percent for pay for what you use. explain why you think thats wrong.

Go ahead and bitch and complain about the USF and how the cablecos built their networks with their own money because that is correct......but they also have always got to choose where they want to build. I can't get cable services of any kind where I live but I can get DSL from VZ due to the phone company (then Contel) having access to that cash. What kind of shape would these cable companies be in if they HAD to supply even basic analog TV service to every living unit that currently has power and phones?

The USF served the purpose it was intended for but I have no idea how it should be handled today. *shrug*

The same state Mcndonalds would be if you made them build a franchise on every street, out of business without any government handouts.
