Comments on news posted 2008-11-06 08:52:03: Earlier this week, we reported that AT&T was planning a trail of caps and $1 per gigabyte overage fees in the Reno, Nevada market, with plans to expand the trial into one additional market before the end of the year. ..

it was fun

As much as i hate my local cable company , im willing to pay extra for their bundled services than have a cap on my line. ( im not even sure how much i use but i dont want to worry about it)

I have a choice

I have the 10/1.5. At 150 meg cap @ $55, thats $2.7/meg. Thats way too damn high. I will either switch or do without internet before being ripped like this.

and I am what AT&T calls a "high value customer" I have 2 iphones, Uverse 300/ Max 10 internet and Uverse voice. Not to mention all the PPVs we get.

I could easily take my business (all of it) elsewhere. And will if this comes to my area. I pay a flat fee for unlimited internet. Not a fee for "upto" some predetermined amount. I might have to start paying "upto" $55 a month.. Bet they wont like that.

Re: I have a choice

its a gig not meg a meg is actually .000358 cents if you figure it down. Also your math is wrong its 0.3666666 cents a gig. 55/150 not 150/55

your right... don't know what I was thinking.. maybe I need more coffee this morning

This sucks

@bellsouth.net

just a thought

they want to meter us well i think we need to meter ourselves to. how do we know they will be accurate. if you get a virus or malware on your computer or any number of things you dont have any idea is going on it will count toward your limit. all the content they have loading on there pages is not something i want to count against me cause they get paid froms adds from disney the limit sucks been with them for 10 yrs have 4 kids at home that uses the internet for school, play box live, ps3 online and even the wii is online from time to time so 3 game units and 5 computers what is it good to pay for home networking. i know im not the only one like this that has att anyways hope i made since hard to think when your falling asleep

AT&T better deliver

OK, you want to put caps on usage, and want to be like every other utility with metered usage, fine. You better work like one then. If you sell me a 10Mb line it better be 10Mbit. I don't pay my electric utility for the quoted electricity 'sometimes' and I will not pay for metered service that doesn't work as advertised.

If it doesn't work as described 24/7 I would call them 24/7 until it does.

I believe Comcast started it, so it needs some recognition.

How Do I Measure My Use

I don't like the idea of a service provider of any kind - electricity, water, telephone, subscriptions, etc. not telling you first how to measure the product before restrictions are placed. I have no idea if I would be considered a low or heavy user since there is no "meter" to see what my consumption is before someone tells me I'm using "too much." Phone rates are in time and distance units even if I am not talking. Water has to be turned on and running. Before someone tells me THEIR measurement of my web use, I want to see the "meter" at my end. I don't trust the bastards. SO let's have an information campaign for the consumers so we can translate GB per month into a language of use we would understand.

Re: How Do I Measure My Use

I don't know how you will measure your use but have fun trying to predict your use (which is more important as a customer AFAIC).

This whole "bandwidth overage" model is flawed IMO. The reason being a lot of data is "pushed" to a user's box although the user did not ask for it.

AT&T is a horrible company. There is a AT&T regional building two blocks away from where I work. Would you guys like me to go egg it at lunch today?

switching

when i read the first article about this on Tuesday i immediately called my cable company. they're installing service this afternoon. as much as it pains me to go back to Charter for internet service, at least i won't have caps. i'll be sure to tell ATT exactly why i'm leaving them too.

No caps, for now... It will soon be who offers the best cap in your area. Charter is my other option as well and looks like I will be going back also. However, I don't see Charter being the company to stand as the beacon of hope against this type of thing.

BFD

How many of us here will actually hit these caps? I know I don't even top 15GB a month with 3 computers and VOIP.

Re: BFD

It is a BFD because it chills the innovation by and restrains the trade of those (AT&T competitors if AT&T is more than just a dumb pipe) who will provide valuable services over the internet.

Re: BFD

My complaint is all the people complaining about the caps who either A, don't know how much bandwidth they use, and are always under the cap, or B, the people who know how much they use, and are also still under the cap.

Also

If AT&T is going to impose this on U-verse customers then, they should offer a software update for the 2wire RG that has a nice bandwidth monitor.

Reno Users: Make a Statement by Ditching AT&T

Take advantage of the cable company's promotional price. If you guys can make a statement, AT&T will have to consider the consequences of implementing their greed nationwide. Hopefully after your cable promo has ended, AT&T will have backed off on the caps.

Caps

I really hope they don't as I love the U-Verse service and was going to sign up for voice when I could get it, but in my area I have a choice and I will vote with my wallet if I have to. See ya AT&T.

What about people with less usage

1. Are they planning to have "rollover" if someone uses less than the maximum cap for a month
2. Can anyone opt for pure usage based connection i.e. just a bare minimum fee to have service and then billed just on used GBs (PAYG)

So sad

Caps/Bandwidth limits - We're in the 21st century, and companies are pushing early 1990's data limits. The sad part is, you're paying for a premium service, and paying the highest mark-up on data.

This really bad business move for ATT

ATT should at least match Comcast Bandwidth Cap or offer higher Bandwidth Cap plan to stay competitive in the market place. I am now seriously thinking of switching back to Comcast for only Internet access. Their Tier 12/2 with 250gig cap for $52.99 a mouth is better deal then ATT MAX Tier 10/1.5 150gig cap for $55.

150gb isnt enough

150gb isn't near enough. I used over 300gb last month and I haven't had p2p software on any computer in well over a year I'm using my connection for normal everyday stuff this aint gonna work for me I'm not going to start using my broadband like a cell phone and watching my monthly gigs. hell cell companies are even going unlimited I just saw an ad for the sprint unlimited everything for $99 that's a world a difference compared to my first cell phone plan in 98. So this to me seems like a step backwards. so now if I continue to use the internet like normal I'm going to get over $150 in charges??? soon we'll see internet star stickers on devices that save bandwidth.

You are limited to a 5GB per month cap on data with Sprint. Read the fine print.

Re: 150gb isnt enough

yes but unless you're tethering how much data are you going to pull from that phone? Either way the voice is unlimited which is what I was getting at. My first cell phone (sprint) I ran up $300 in in overages my first month because there were hardly any minutes . Now most moderate plans offer the average joe more than enough and there are unlimited plans aswell. You now get more bang for you're buck. Att on the otherhand is taking a step backwards and giving less for more $

I can't imagine VOIP taking up that much data unless you are on the phone 24/7. I am more worried about actual Internet usage and things like Xbox Live or PSN eating bandwidth.

we need FIOS now.

those caps are ridiculous. Will these caps apply for the Southeast?
If so, why not match the prices of Bellsouth to AT&T DSL prices while we are on it.

Don't be surprised if the V puts caps on and throttles down the upload speeds on FIOS.

My question is...

Ok, if they are going to impose these caps, are they also going to provide us with a way to monitor our monthly usage? And by that I mean, not just what our own network monitors tell us, but their official numbers.

If they don't, it would be like giving a speeding ticket to people who cannot tell how fast they are going.

I am betting they won't.

I'm not going to wait - I'm switching today!!

I didn't sign up to have limited bandwidth; in fact I'm disappointed that I can't get GB level service like they offer in Japan.....

Thanks FCC for making our Country 19th in the world for total overall broadband - this from the Country that invented the Internet!!!
