Kaspersky is in ZAPro

FWIW, Checkpoint licensed Kaspersky a year or two ago, and it's been the AV (and maybe the Anti-Spyware) stuff for ZA since release 7.1. Now, I am not going to say that v8.0.059 absolutely has Kaspersky in it, but it's likely that it does. It wouldn't surprise me if the KIS's suite stuff is based on ZA either.

The best thing about ZAPro especially the suite version is that the software allows two distinct high levels of customized protection, what they call 'Trusted' and 'UnTrusted' network protection. (Besides the program and component level protection.) A single click and you can switch from one to the other. Every time you connect to a network, via wireless or via wire you can select the network's trustworthiness. Even to the point of when at home, safely behind a router/firewall that you trust, to turn off protection. Go to the local sandwich shop and set it for the max. Each profile is fully configurable, and you can also predefine trusted websites.

As for bloatware all combo AV/AS etc take cyles, at least unlike Symantec's products once the software license is applied, and the interface utilized, it doesn't seem to go out of it's mind and tell you that you're not authorized to use it every few hours. I've only once had to uninstall and reinstall ZAPro and that was due to MS's update service which applied something to the PC and I lost connectivity. Uninstall and reinstall is a Symantec first-line given.
You can easily choose to not enable the parental controls or ID protection services, just as you can the firewalls or AV protection.

Version 8 plays much better with UPnP. If you use software such as P2P stuff, so you don't need special router and settings anymore in ZA to support these applications. I've dropped a whole slew of special rules in v8 and in my router.

Finally for multi-PC licensees, it pretty cheap 1-3 pcs have the same price: $49.95/yr for the Suite which is $30 LESS than the ZA+AV only. While you can get Symantec on sale or rebated to the same, it's a PITA, and they should just lower the pricing.

Free software and people still complain

Its been said numerous times in this thread the activation key will be emailed to you within 48 hours.

What is the problem with some of you guys?

I think its pretty simple to understand. You wait up to 48 hours and check your email. You get a download link and activation key. You download and install. You just got a free year of there Pro service.

Yet a bunch of arrogant assholes are posting complaining they couldn't download a free offer today. Damn 48 hours is a such a long time to wait....

ZA alternative

I'd go with Vista Firewall Control if you are running Vista, IMO this is an excellent FREE firewall.

here's the links for the 32 & 64 bit (free) versions:

Zoobin Meta

@verizon.net

It's compromised.

This free version is no big deal. The old ZONE ALARM (4.5.538) is better. It's one of the last versions before the product was bought by Israelis and given huge back doors for the US feds, as demanded by the Patriot Act.

Zonealarm pro - what it is? Firewall and Anti spyware?

Can you just disable the add-on like AV and anti spyware and keep using the firewall indefinitely? Since a firewall is just a firewall. It should know where the packet will come from(stateful). Since it is a PRO- How many interface can it support? I hope it can support 2 or 3 individual NICs.

I just signed up hoping I can install it on a PC with 3 NICs.

Hmmm. I had it once recently on a PC that had a Intel Dual Port Server card. The card was setup to bond the two ports together, and ZA didn't have a problem with it (and you could see on the system tray the data that was being passed on one or the other), but I don't think this answers your question. I think that ZA would only be able to apply one setting/profile to all the NICs. That is all the nics would have to be either trusted or untrusted.

I did a quick search of the user forum and could not find any reference to multiple nics, but maybe my search criteria was poor.

The subscription provides AV/AS and software program updates for 1 (or more) years. I *think* that you could configure it just for the firewall forever (though it might nag).

Never Heard Back From Them

I filled out the info when I went to the download link and filled out what was needed for the free firewall. The message said I would get a email within 24 hours. Well it's past 24 hours later and I have no email from them. Neither has my neighbor and we signed up at about the same time.

You simply got lucky. But, you know we are an 'instant gratification' society. We want what we want, and we want it now!! BTW, it's been two days ago (not a full 48 hours yet), and I haven't received the download link either. I'm not fretting though. I only want to install it on one computer anyway, and it already has firewall software activated.

Got one on my Earthlink.net address and the other one on my older Mindspring.com address without any problems. I have all spam and virus controls at EL disabled.

Hope this helps.

Well, I signed up on Tuesday using two different e-mail addresses so it's been well over 48 hours. I haven't received an e-mail at either one, and yes I have checked my junk mail folders. My last experience with Zone Alarm was in 2005 and I wasn't impressed then. I'm certainly not impressed now. Guess I won't be using any of their products either because I can't find sales support on their site. Of course, they want to charge for over-the-phone tech support, too.

EDIT: I found chat support, but they're off on the weekends. I sent a message on their contact form, but it bounced back to me as undeliverable.

I never got mine either. I'm not running any spam filters as I don't trust them to get it right. I'm still waiting but this is getting ridiculous.

I run ThreatFire and a Smoothwall so it isn't like I wanted it or needed it. But they were the one's who offered it for free to all takers. I thought I would see what's changed over the years. I'd forgotten what a nag it is.\

Still though, it was really nice of them to put it out there like that. I would keep it around for a while if they would pony up the key. I could tell it to be quiet and just work. Oh well, no harm no foul...
