I can see this lasting until the first dumb ass wrecks while typing an email. At that point the whole mess will become a liability and insurance companies will be charging higher premiums if you have this in a new car. You can't trust idiots as it is and you certainly won't be able to once people start having internet access in the car. One good idea would be to have it shut off if the car is in drive and there is no one in any of the passenger seats, much like they do airbags.

Kids are sitting on school buses for up to an hour or more per day going back and forth to school. Autonet should be pitching their product to school boards and how having a router on a school bus would allow all the rugrats to access the internet on their long rides.

Not sure if this applies in this or any other case, but I found multiple users pretty much killed usability on a Sprint provisioned account. Not sure if it is Sprint's service, the EVDO modem (Sierra Wireless Compass 597 USB modem), or the router (a firmware updated Cradlepoint EVDO/Wi-Fi router) that's causing the problem. |

As Carpooling gains popularity I can see the other three/four members of a ride hoping on to take care of some work issues or just browsing.
I use the nets' regularly on the train. sometimes I take the bus, which is a huge unproductive waste of two hours to get in/out of town.
I guess alot of the common folk don't have enough i-business to worry about toting their portables (minus phone) all over the place. |

I have the Sprint SERO plan with HTC touch. I know the plan is gone but many have it.
I recently played World of Warcraft in the car on my laptop using my phone on a 2 hour long trip. Only dropped connection once and pings were actually in the low 100ms.
This seems like the same thing to me. |

I already pay $15/mo for 3G unlimited on my cell phone from ATT. So, I can tether my laptop when I need it. What's so hard about it? Why do I have to pay another carrier more money?
Unless I was the passenger or had the thing picking up emails for reading later, this is a big waste, imho. Though I liked the school bus or commercial transit idea as a 'convenience' where they don't charge for it.
Last time I stayed at a hotel that charged for wireless, I used my phone instead. Have to stop staying at Hilton owned chains...unless I get a gratis on the connection.

Imagine communicating with other drivers by contacting them thru mic, checking news channels by telling the os to acces news, checking email and having it read by voice, etc.
Anything can be good if someone isn't too dumb to not think outside the box.
Honestly, paying a fee per month to be able to tell a driver who can't see you in his/her blindspot exactly where you are would pay for itself in less accidents.
With all this said, I doubt my ideas will be implemented. I only said these to give people an idea that this type of idea would be excellent in the right hands. |

I don't think this is all that bad of an idea. If you think it's going to increase accidents, hasn't cell phone usage already taken care of that stat? People have data plans on their phones, so pretty much the same thing. They can turn over and look at their laptop as much as they can whip out their blackberry and check their email or shoot a text.
As an internet radio broadcaster, I'm seeing possibilities. Perhaps this is an easy way for people to literally tune in "on the road", just like traditional radio.

Actually its already been implemented to quite an extent. With software like AIVMS (an artificial intelligence for carpc's and home theater PC's), you can even do a web search just by asking the AI for the info. It reads email, and has real time traffic and weather reporting by voice. Its similar to Fords' SYNC system in that you can play songs using simple voice command. It also provides voice command control of a PC interfaced HD Radio tuner. |
