PC Magazine ends print version - online only now

»tech.yahoo.com/news/afp/20081119···magazine
PC Magazine, which has documented the explosive growth of the personal computer since 1982, announced on Wednesday that it was dropping its print edition next year and going online only.

PC Magazine publisher Ziff Davis Media, which recently exited Chapter 11 bankruptcy, said in a statement that the final edition of the iconic magazine would be the January 2009 issue.

Ziff Davis said PC Magazine, which has suffered a steep drop in advertising as scores of competing publications cropped up on the Internet, will go "all-digital" at PCMag.com.
I had a subscription to PC Magazine back in the 80's and until recently still had old copies sitting on a shelf in my library. Looks like magazines are going to be all online pretty soon. Or will be available in portable form on things like the Kindle.

Virgin America airline launching WiFi service Nov 22

»news.cnet.com/8301-1035_3-101025···1_3-0-20

The California-based airline will launch its Gogo Inflight Internet service on November 22 in a flight over San Francisco. To show off how robust the in-flight Internet service is, the company is planning to stream a live video feed from the plane down to the ground to an audience attending the YouTube Live concert in San Francisco.

The Gogo service will be available to all passengers on a single Wi-Fi enabled plane starting November 24. And by the second quarter of 2009, the company expects to offer Wi-Fi on its entire fleet of planes.

Virgin America isn't the only U.S. airline to launch in-flight Wi-Fi. American Airlines debuted its in-flight Internet access service in August on 15 of its 767-200 airplanes. Delta Air Lines has said that it will outfit its planes by the middle of next year with Wi-Fi.

American and Delta area also using the Gogo service from Aircell. The cost of the Gogo service is $9.95 on flights of three hours or less, and $12.95 on flights of more than three hours.

RIAA gets Tennessee schools to police music piracy

»news.cnet.com/8301-1023_3-101018···1_3-0-20
Tennessee has agreed to filter computer networks for unauthorized music downloads at the state's colleges and universities.

Tennessee Gov. Phil Bredesen signed into law a bill designed to thwart music piracy at the state's campuses, the Recording Industry Association of America said on its Web site.

The bill requires Tennessee public and private schools exercise "appropriate means" to ensure that campus computer networks aren't being used to download copyright material via peer-to-peer file-sharing programs, the RIAA said.

The Electronic Frontier Foundation, an Internet-user advocacy group, called the law "ridiculous," and said the costs of enforcing it would top $9 million.

"The entertainment industry lobby seems to be succeeding, bit-by-bit in persuading legislators to coerce universities into buying 'infringement suppression' technologies," the EFF said in a blog post, adding that these technologies are expensive and "won't stop file sharing on campus networks."
A trend is developing - schools in more and more states are required to police their networks. Will ISPs be next?

Re: PC Magazine ends print version - online only now

I have a few issues as well. Most of the magazines that I get today are electronically delivered (Zinio). It's just easier and you don't have the mess on the coffee table or magazine rack.

Anyone remember back in the '80's to mid '90's when Computer Shopper was 800 to 1000 pages and weight 5 to 10 pounds per issue? LOL. New print version is hardly 100 pages.

Ah, the good old days of print...

This trend is even more pervasive then people might imagine--- it's the trend of taxpayer money being used to police the best interests of private companies or industries. There are many examples, schools policing network for infractions being one; The abuse of eminent domain for private gain being another, etc etc

I would be happy to see US Cellular be acquired by Verizon. I have a few friends that use USC and it would be nice not to use up minutes.

Don't like the anti-competitive-ness of it all, however. More companies, the better.

This sort of thing has been happening for a long time.

1) Federal taxes collected from citizens, taking money out of the local economy.
2) Money flows to Washington
3) Washington takes its cut off the top.
4) Feel good legislation enacted putting strings on payout.
5) Local entities spend time writing Grants and complying with feel good restrictions to get some of the money back.

There are lots of things that can only be done by the Federal Government. However wherever possible the shorter the distance between tax collection and use the better.

i think ISPs will be hard to get to police their networks, because as we have seen it just isnt possible on ISP scale. however a school network is just like an office network and can have stricter policy then an ISP.

infact i think ISPs should never have to police for piracy, policing is the job of well the police. EZ-Pass permits access to the turnpike but its still the job of the cops to investigate crimes committed on it.

Re: PC Magazine ends print version - online only now

I currently have about 10 years of PC mag myself. I enjoy print versions versus electronic, so who know if I will continue reading.
