The backlash on this is going to be HUGE. I'd hate to be a member of the CRTC for the next few weeks. It just proves that Ma Bell, even in another country, has the best lobbyists in the world and would rather litigate than innovate.

You have an entrenched board which is quasi independent of the Your Government, much like our FCC. What I would look at instead is what kind of ties do the board members have with the industary they are supposed to regulate. -- I am quite sure now that often, very often, in matters concerning religion and politics a man's reasoning powers are not above the monkey's. - Mark Twain in Eruption

Good luck with that since people in Canada feel that they're owed unlimited and uncapped/throttled internet access. The US makes ISPs build out their network now if the Bell's don't want to play Canada should be the same.

Forcing American ILECs to lease out their DSLAM ports and transport DSL traffic to the ISP's datacenter is unheard of in the USA. Even RT customers can get competitor DSL. In the USA you have to install your own RT/DSLAM to get competitor DSL, no exceptions, and ISPs must figure out how to transport traffic from the CO to their data center.

| Bell sucks What doesn't really make sense here if they are worried about network congestion wouldn't they filter between the hours of 9-5 to ensure no issues? Why would they filter after work hours which is something that is really strange.
Funny how with the increased bandwidth Bell did not upgrade. Bell is 10 years behind.

Bell's throttling preceded (more or less) the opening of their own on-demand video store. The throttle hours are 4pm - 2am, which corresponds to peak video watching time.
This is the problem with a combined common carrier and value-added provider.

| david vs goliath This could be the beginning of the end. Bell will lose their indirect customer (through wholesale competitors) to local competitors (if existent) or cable companies.
Small ISP will have to start local alternative at the size they can financially support. On the short run it could mean that a lot of user will be stuck with a no-flavor internet service. On the long run, if done well, it could mean more competitions and better services for consumers.
Bell might enforce caps like we see in the wholesale cable industry (TPIA). -- Electronic Box Inc.

1 edit | The Big Question - How do we get around this? Can Teksavvy et al install some co-located equipment to get past the throttling points?
How much would it add to the service cost? I'd happily pay more for more speed and no Bell/CRTC crap.
Update1: What can we do to Bell Canada to make them pay for this?

1 edit | Re: The Big Question - How do we get around this? That's pretty close BellNoWay, but there must be a buyer or someone to take it over. The only ones are us, the users.
Teksavvy has one option and one option only to stay in biz: Bill Bell for their [Teksavvy] losses x 100 to x 1000 and for all the troubles and aggravations wait 30 days if Bell don't pay send 'em Notice of Intent and Understanding wait 3 working days, 4 days there and 4 days back = 11 days if bell still don't remedy then take it to courts since Teksavvy will automatically win
Teksavvy users can put in their own Notices since they lost out on work, bandwidth, hydro, equipment, etc. Bell users can do same, even if u're a past Bell user.
Or Teksavvy can start lookin' for other biz and or jobs, cause Bell is gonna squeeze everyone, and bad.
One more thing: force CRTC to pay for losses due to their decision as well

| Wholesale pricing Not sure I understand. If I was selling to a wholesaler I would charge them 95%ile usage billing. The more they use the more the spend (re-cooping cost). Throttling on large cap wholesale services does not make any sense if you get more revenue from more traffic.
Am I missing something?
|
| mton
@gc.ca
| Re: Wholesale pricing That might be an isolated case, but Look Communications have posted information on their site mentionning a fee of 360,000 per month. (Context: After Bell tried to disconnect Look from DSL, the Ontario Court of Justice forced Bell to continue the carrier service for this monthly amount)
However, shortly after in November 2007 Look was claiming that Bell would "excessively and incorrectly invoice Look for more than double the terms of the July 31 Order of $360,000 per month". »www.look.ca/en/files/Look_grante···0731.pdf
So at this point, I'm still unsure whether Bell sells its DSL on a flat rate, per 'box', per connection, per subscriber, or per GB. If anyone knows, that would be interesting.
