@rr.com 1 edit | Best news for WiMAX
This is the best news we've heard so far for the future of WiMAX technology. It will be interesting to see if the XOHM brand will remain or they will use the Clearwire name from now on. |

| Karl needs to take math class
The completion of the network will be gratly aided by a $2 billion investment Comcast ($1.05 billion), Intel ($1 billion), Time Warner Cable ($550 million), Google ($500 million), and Bright House Networks ($100 million.)
1.05 billion + 1 billion + 550 million + 500 million + 100 million = over 3 billion not 2 billion. 3.2 billion to be exact. |

1 edit | It's their own prediction and has repeatedly been doled out to the media (myself included)...it's also in FCC filings: New Clearwire will deploy an advanced mobile WiMAX broadband network that will cover up to 140 million people in the United States in thirty months. They also like to throw out the prediction of 60-80 million by 2009, 140 million by 2010 and 200 million by 2011. Whether they actually get anywhere near that is of course anybody's guess... |

That will be about 45% of the US population by 2010, which is at about 305 million right now. They may make noises about rural development of Wimax, but they will only get near those numbers if they are deploying mostly in metro areas. -- My BLOG .. .. Internet News .. .. They may make noises about rural development of Wimax, but they will only get near those numbers if they are deploying mostly in metro areas. Yeah, I think it's been pretty well established they plan to target major metro markets. I think the lip service to rural deployment is mostly lip service to get people all hot and bothered...Last month, Sprint launched its first WiMax urban deployment in Baltimore to generally favorable reviews. Clearwire has been testing a mobile WiMax deployment in Portland, Ore., and is preparing to go live with that network early next year. In a conference call following the release of Clearwire's financial report, Wolff indicated the company might be able to use so-called "white spaces" spectrum, which is unlicensed and was approved for free use by the FCC last week.
"We think of it as expanded Wi-Fi," Wolff said. "I think that presents some interesting opportunities for us, and will be looking at how we might leverage it in the rural areas." He noted that Google, its new investing partner, pushed hard for passage of the white-spaces spectrum. Not willing yet to say they won't succeed, but I think it's a pretty huge uphill battle any which way they make the assault on mount AT&T/Verizon. |

| said by Mike :140 million? Try 2 million. Max. I am sure that the 140 million mentioned was a homes reachable stat and not how many customers they expect. Unless you really meant that their coverage maps will only reach 2 million homes - but I think that would be way too low. -- My BLOG .. .. Internet News .. .. | Hoping it works out
I have heard a lot of impressive stuff regarding the capabilities of WiMax so I am hoping this venture is somewhat successful. I don't know if they will nab the numbers they claim but if the technology works as well as the trials are conducting now, they may get a good amount of people on board. I like the idea of sending a picture I took on a WiMax enabled camera to my computer at home. Of course the only device I have seen is a Nokia internet tablet which is supposed to utilize WiMax. Other toys may be a ways off. Anyway, I hope some success is achieved. |
