AOL Loss = RoadRunner gains?

I wonder if the AOL losses are providing gains for Road Runner?

Considering the only subscribers who use AOhell are the elderly and/or clueless and/or hillbillies out in the sticks, I'd say the piddling 7% drop was probably due to mortality rates. Of course, upon the death of Uncle Albert, AOhell will continue to bill his account no matter how many times the family attempts to stop service.

Re: AOL Loss = RoadRunner gains?

That happened to a relative of mine. It took months of fighting with AOL until they stopped billing, at which time they had gotten Cable Internet.

I'm sure they lie about their numbers. They count customers as cds sent to people. I figure they are running out of money as people are switching to cable and not paying their overpriced dial-up service, so you see the massive drop of "Customers" as cds not sent out.

Odd figures

From the chart...
Road Runner 8.4m 8.4%
Verizon 8.3m 8.7%
AOL 8.1m 8.9%

why is 8.1m 8.9%
and 8.4m only 8.4%?

Re: Odd figures

In the chart, I see that they show different sources for the data on market share: "Trending Schedules," "SEC 10-Q," and "Press Release." The SEC 10-Q should be more authoritative than a press release, but it may also reflect a different period of time and that could be a cause for the discrepancy in the values for market share. Also, only RoadRunner and AOL are shown with "Trending Schedules" as the source of data (because both come from Time Warner). All this makes me not very trustful of the information.

Hows this for a laugh?

Comcast should pass AT&T next quarter to become the nation's largest broadband ISP.
Thats great, and AT&T's solution, implement more draconian caps than the market leader.

So AT&T hows that working for ya? The market leader has faster speeds lower caps...oh and more market share..

Niiiiiceee I smell a CEO roast coming.

Re: Hows this for a laugh?

Do you suppose that the feds will allow Comcast and Time Warner Cable to merge? Then those Comcast caps could be given to TWC customers, assuning that they are reaslistic and the infrastructure can support them. I remember when the territory I was in was owned by Comcast, and then was sold to Adelphia. When the opportunity to get it back from Adelphia came along, Comcast didn't bite.

they wouldn't be allowed to merge. Even if the Republicans would still be in office Jan 20th that type of merger would not be allowed.

Re: Hows this for a laugh?

That would not keep TWC from going bankrupt, so far as I know, because if the Republicans were still in office on January 21 or later, a bailout of TWC would not be likely.
Once TWC went bankrupt, the assets would be available to whatever entities were still around.

I have C-Span on now and Sen Bennett asked the CEOs of Chrysler and GM whether they would be willing to accept a requirement to merge their companies if that were included in a deal from Congress to give them money to stay alive. So, the idea of allowing a merger in another industry, even if it were non-competitive to some extent, isn't really out of the question, I think. Besides that, there's no real competition in cable due to the franchise arrangements. I can't get Comcast if I'm in TWC territory.

AOL cease to exist?

If they lose 7% of their subscriber base every quarter, how long until they are gone?

Re: AOL cease to exist?

None. While the percentage says relatively even, the absolute numbers are declining.

AOL's subscriber losses the past several quarters.
3Q06 -2,502,000 (14%)
4Q06 -2,015,000 (13.3%)
1Q07 -1,184,000 (9.0%)
2Q07 -1,071,000 (8.9%)
3Q07 -851,000 (7.8%)
4Q07 -740,000 (7.3%)
1Q08 -647,000 (6.9%)
2Q08 -604,000 (7.0%)

Still, that's an incredible subscriber loss. From 17,700,000 at June 30, 2006 to 8,086,000 two years later.

Just 6 years ago AOL had 26.7 million subscribers.

It would take 7 more years for them to drop to 1 million subscribers. 12 years to drop to 250K, 15 years to drop to 100K. Of course that's assuming once they get that low AOL would care to still be an ISP.

I thought they were gone. I mean its been ages since I've gotten an AOL CD in the mail.
Is it just a coincidence that AT&T and Comcast have nearly an identical market share and # of subscribers?:tinfoilhat:

Sprint mobile broadband

I wonder why Sprint mobile broadband card users (EVDO laptop cards) are not included. They have over 2 million subs. If Clearwire is included, why not EVDO users?

The survey included no Mobile Wireless customers at all. Even the mobile wireless customers from Verizon & AT&T were not included. Clearwire was included for their FIXED wireless customers.

Look at the bottom

"24 Other U.S. ISPs 23.2 24.1% "

Not everyone reports their subscrinbers. Since Cox went private they don't. Notice they aren't listed but they should be in the top 5.

Conversion Needed

Could somebody make this into a chart of some sort. My head hurts from all the numbers.
