It'll be interesting to see what speed tiers they offer. Hopefully this will also spur Verizon to accelerate their Fios deployments in the Bronx to snatch some of Cablevision's market share. -- A man must have a code -Bunk |

1 edit | DOCSIS 3 Ok, but reliability in general is what I want
Don't get me wrong, speeds are great. We had Optimum Online from late 1999 through the first half of 2005. Speeds and reliability were excellent through 2003. After then, the speeds started to decrease a bit, and the reliability became predictably worse.
After contacting CV, and having them insist my signal levels were fine, I had them change my outside splitter and I swapped out my modem. Things improved slightly, but I would still come home from time to time to the blinking cable modem indicative of no signal/connection.
In late 2004, Verizon brought Fios to the area, offering 15/2 service. I signed up in May 2005, and it's been great. Now, with my plan at 20/5, the speed is a nice thing, but not nearly as important (to me) as reliability of the connection. Fios has never been down for me when I needed it, short of a regional power outage, which of course is expected.
I have moved since (to an area where Fios is only lit in half of the area - and not in my half), so CV is my only choice. (I don't want DSL.) It remains to be seen how much better their reliability will be at my new address. I'm hoping for the best, but it'll give me a nice comparison to my last three years of Fios.
So while I congratulate CV on continung to upgrade their network, I would settle for increased reliability, or reliability similar to the stabiltiy of my Fios connection at my parent's place. Of course, YMMV and perhaps other CV subscribes have had better results with them than I had in the 2 years before I switched providers. -- "Honesty may be the best policy, but it's important to remember that apparently, by elimination, dishonesty is the second-best policy." - George Carlin

| I'm a non-Boost subscriber and I'm capped at 16.5/2. I get pretty damn near close to the caps.
When DOCSIS 3.0 comes out, I'll have to upgrade to 802.11n or wire up some GigE so I can take advantage of the ridiculous speeds. 802.11g just won't cut it. -- QUAD!!!! |

Indicative of a bad drop or bad line inside. I know....signal was within specs....I've had it happen and would have SWORN against everything, but it happened with a two month old install. I had actually fallen onto the coax in my crawlspace and apparently it was enough to damage the cable. The iO box was 50/50 working, and when I switched the line to the modem it would sporadically drop out. All the time my signal was excellent.
I got a tech out here and he actually made around a 200' cable and ran it to the pole. The sporadic channels on the iO box stopped. I had ran the lines very nice and had a crawlspace that was easy enough to maneuver so he actually ripped every line out and ran me new ones - including a brand new drop from the street. |

Well, he went above and beyond I guess. They replaced the coax line from the modem to the main line on my house, but not the line from the house to the road. Guess there is where the problem was. -- "Honesty may be the best policy, but it's important to remember that apparently, by elimination, dishonesty is the second-best policy." - George Carlin

Sir - we in OOL-land with the BOOST option, have, as noted in the original article, service that is 'uncapped in the truest sense of the word'. No monthly limits. No speed caps upload or download. Whatever the local network infrastructure can handle is what we get. This is easily confirmed by DOCSDIAG output.
Those on the 'standard tier' are speed capped at 16.5 down/2 up (again confirmed by DOCSDIAG) - but have no monthly usage/download maximums/caps. |

Optimum Online service was $39.95 for cable subscribers in 2002 ... Here, in 2008, it's $44.95. And that's IF you don't have the Triple Play.
I wouldn't call that excessive at all... a $5 rate hike in 6+ years? Not bad at all. |

Not to split hairs ..but according to the original article: "..reports from our Optimum Online forum (also see here) indicate the company has completely removed downstream modem caps.."..."Boost users are being allowed to go just about as fast as local network conditions allow via DOCSIS 2.0 (upload configs remain intact)" -- Block Accounts | UseNet Now |

Maybe. but not beating fios on upload speeds. even if they came up with a 50000 / 50000 tier and both fios and CV were even in terms of speed OFFERINGS, i'd prefer the company that only loads 32 subs on a node as opposed to the one that has 500+ -- When I gez aju zavateh na nalechoo more new yonooz tonigh molinigh - Ken Lee |

said by dvd536 : i'd prefer the company that only loads 32 subs on a node as opposed to the one that has 500+ I doubt cablevision has 500 houses per node anywhere. Real statistics are very hard to find, but I think Cablevision is 50% or 25% of the houses that TWC and Comcast has per node. Cablevision recently has been installing "split 1 node into 4" fiber nodes around its service territory (4 unique outputs/upload bandwidth pools). They could also be doing a mhz plant upgrade. I would guess Cablevision keeps it at 50-100 houses passed per node, and 60% penetration (TV), and 50% OOL subscribing (not everyone uses computers) so its really like 25-60 OOL customers per node, and not everyone floors their connections all the time. |
