TWC would pick up OH, WI and or MN too. That would cover this area. Especially in Ohio they're the largest provider of TV.
Comcast could pick up MI to complete that. BrightHouse also could pick up MI to pull in more since they're in Upper MI.

| en102Canadian, eh? join:2001-01-26 Valencia, CA | Lets see... the past 10 years (except probably just after 911) has been decent on the economy as a whole. The past year (and forecast to the end of next year), will be pretty bad.
Almost all companies are taking a hit. Those that are (or were already) deep in debt will most likely file. I don't see much 'growth' in TV or Phone service, and many that are keeping their service, will likely scale back (i.e. why do I need a 20Mbps Internet package? I can save +$15/month by using a 6Mbps or less). Cut phone service and go wireless. TV - OTA should work, or cut back to a lower tier.
I gave TWC their chance - the $89.99/month isn't bad - however, I've had more outages (at least on significant/month) on cable, interrupting Internet, and in some cases, Phone and TV as well.
Next year - when the rate increases hit - its OTA all the way, cellular + Skype for phone, and a toss between DSL or cable for Internet (DSL is more reliable here).

Their stock has been below the $1.00 minimum threshold for three months now and closed on Friday at $0.13 a share. Once NASDAQ reinstates the suspended delisting rules, Charter will have to slide down to the OTCBB, making it more likely that the bondholders will push to get pennies on the dollar in a bankruptcy filing. The company has needed to sell off a large chunk of systems for years, but as usual, they have sat on their hands. IMHO, if they were a proactive company instead of a reactive at the last moment one, they would be in decent shape at this point.

| Charter Good and Bad I have Charter video and internet in Newport, Oregon and our experience has been interesting and overall better than satisfactory. The local staff are outstanding: friendly, knowledgeable and responsive. The online and telephone people are among the worst in the world. They even make Cox look good.
Internet service has been fast and reliable. Speeds have remained consistent at the high end of the purchased tier. Yes some occasional slowing, but not bigtime or for long.
Video at the basic level is fine. We started with HD but dropped it because quality was poor and offerings were few. It might have been the box they gave us, but when I connected directly to the TV antenna input we were satisfied with quality and the network stations were much better.
If they sell off any parts I hope it isn't us as Comcast, logical purchaser, is such a shitty organization. -- My perception is REALITY

| Ha, not a suprise I've had their service for 10 years and they are without doubt the worst company I have ever had to do business with. They are completely non-responsive to problems, they offer terrible service and they have no customer service whatsoever. Our local government is bombarded with complaints about their service every year. Their answer is raise their prices every year, while cutting basic services and channels and moving them to a higher tier. | |

MLouPremium join:2007-05-01 Madison, WI | Noooo! I love Charter. I have the triple play. My internet has been rock solid for years. When I've had a problem, they send a tech the next day. They won't turn over your personal info to law enforcement without a subpoena. They don't throttle. Doesn't feel like a long wait for upgrades to speed or TV services. Always get a new deal when the old deal is up. The only major problem I've had was when their phone service first came to Madison, WI.
After reading about all the complaints with other providers, I can't stand the thought of using any other company. I refuse to ever deal with ATT (bleep them!) again.
If I had the $, I would buy Charter, streamline the offerings, simplify the billing, and give more power to the engineers.
This is not news I enjoy waking up to.

| | o well.... i won't mind if charter goes under at all, as long as comcast doesn't take over. all i've gotten out of charter was OK cable service and a steady stream of small gradual price hikes (~$10-15 over 3 years). maybe verizon will gobble up lots of customers where fiber is available, or if puff on the crack pipe long enough, i'll come up with the idea that worcester will get fiber sooner.
i suppose this is why 2+ advertisement notices from charter every month, the bill comes with advertisements, the return envelope has a detachable advertisement and the back of the return envelope is an advertisement.

Lazlow join:2006-08-07 Saint Louis, MO | Mixed bag Charter is a real mixed bag. IF you can get through all the dead wood, they have some really smart, helpful, and knowledgeable people working for them. But their system is set up in a manner to make it as difficult as possible to get a hold of those people. An easy example of this is that they no longer give out the number of the local offices. 99.9% of the time the front line reps do not know about an outage until after it has been fixed. Fortunately I live in St. Louis (Charter's Corporate home) and rather than seeing me down at the corp offices(again) they have given me a list of people to call. Prior to getting this list, getting a problem fixed (seems to happen about once a year) took about three months, now I can USUALLY get things straightened out in a few of days.
Now all that being said, when it works it works well. They do not cap, throttle, or generally cause me any (day in day out) issues. While I think all ISPs in the US massively overcharge for what they provide, Charter is no worse than the rest. Personally, I hope they do not have to sell out. Mostly becuase I do not want to see a cap come in and our only other choice is ATT (which has all but said that a cap will be in place by mid year).

| Not surprised at all... Here is a company that allows its construction managers to run .5 miles of cable from both ends of a short road towards the middle. BOTH cables go past empty fields right up to where the houses start....then BOTH cables END.
Yep, these morons left ALL of the homes in the middle without service, get provided service to several corn fields along the way.
In my opinion, this company deserves to go bankrupt and hopefully PURCHASED by some company who knows how to actually provide service....
Good ridance Charter...don't let the door hit you....

| | Charter server I've been a Charter off and on since moving to southern Illinois four years ago. I use both their analog cable and high-speed Internet and I'm usually satisfied. They sometimes have good deals to keep customers (I once paid $68/month for a year for Internet and full digital service with all premium channels).
Their video is very reliable, but their Internet goes out about 3 or 4 times a year, usually on a Friday evening or Saturday morning. It seems like they only have techs on duty during normal business hours since once it goes out, it stays out until Monday morning. When you call their tech support, you get a call center in the Philippines (I think) that simply read from a script and can't really resolve any issues.
I don't believe their service is any better or worse than any other cable company. I would hate to see them be bought out since rates would then increase faster than they already do.
|
| | charter sucks please god, let them fall. where i live they have a contract with the city to be the only provider in the area and the service works about 50% of the time. | |
|
| Lazlow join:2006-08-07 Saint Louis, MO | Re: charter sucks You should be taking this to the city. They usually have much more power (than any individual) to get things straightened out. Feel lucky that your city still has the power to do this. In a lot of states the controlling authority in now at the state level and when this happens you are really screwed.
Before you say goodbye to Charter, think about who will be replacing them. While Charter has it's issues I cannot think of any of the cable companies (that have the money to expand) that I would want to take over my area. Who would you like to see in their place? What area are you in?

| any company that buys them out would likely be just as bad I have charter in Northern MN and I love their internet... solid 10meg down no matter what time of the day.
Their HD offerings however suck and when their encoder goes down on a Friday it's not fixed until Monday afternoon (leaving me with 60% fewer HD channels.)
I have all of the premium channels... if I had DirecTV I would get 5 HD channels for Showtime, 2 For HBO, 2 for Cinemax, 4 for Starz, and 2 for TMC (15 HD channels) and with charter I have only 5... one HD channel per premium network. That's horrible in my opinion.
Also, they charge $20 for a DVR... if you want 3 DVR's you pay $60 a month as they give absolutely NO DISCOUNTS. How they are in debt when they charge that much for DVR's is beyond me.
|
| 1 edit | Re: any company that buys them out would likely be just as bad I just want to voice my opinion about Charter. I have been a dissatisfied customer for 5 years now in Arkansas. Charter is the only option around. In the 5 years of bs, I have been told every month that cable internet is coming which has never came. Also, on the video side, I was so happy to buy my first Big Screen Hd 1080i tv, one call to Charter ruined that. Charter in my area only offers there so called "Digital Cable" Which does not include HD. I also can't get a dvr. The really funny thing about the situation, is that I can hook a set of hd rabbit ears to my nice big hd tv, and get a better pitcher than what comes off my cable box. HA WHAT A JOKE! Then, as if all this was not enough for me to stand, I get a nice letter from charter a month ago, that stated I will have a rate increase of 11.00/month more. The service I have costs 81.00 its now 92.00 and for what? They raise my rates, with no apparant intentions of doing anything good for the extra money I will be giving them. WOW! Mr. CEO of Charter you are a true a$$hole.
Anybody with Charter in Arkansas, I feel your pain. Comcast please hurry up and buy them out!
