These may include detecting malicious traffic patterns and preventing the distribution of viruses or other malicious code, internet port monitoring and managing network resources through techniques such as limiting the aggregate bandwidth available for certain bandwidth intensive protocols such as peer-to-peer applications and newsgroups.

Uplink Not So Hot

Why would they offer 2MBps uplink speeds on the mobile plans, but limit home plans?

That's the same thing I was thinking. I would think it's easier to deliver MORE to a stationary site than a mobile site. Do they fear businesses using them to host web sites?

Because home service has no caps.

The advantage over Sprints Broadband

Is that they have not announced any caps on the mobile broadband so called "unlimited" »https://www.clear.com/shop/plans_wimax.php wheras Sprint has a 5GB limit?

I feel a cap is coming but it is just not being mentioned yet...

Even if there is a cap, I would think it'd probably be above 5GB... at least for the fixed, they're trying to go up against the wireline ISPs, so 5GB simply won't cut it.

portland (the burbs) is fios territory.

hmm. so i can spend $3 more a month and get 10/2 fios?

hope they're not relying on the home market.

Chasmn84

@comcast.net

They are relying on the home market because fios isnt everywhere... clear will be able to go (in the end) to places where DSL and cable dont even reach let alone Fios. between clear, LTE and the faster satellite connections i would be surprised if a fixed line doesnt start getting washed away just like Pots are with the Cell phones.

Re: Uplink Not So Hot

I'll take 4/2 over 6/512 for the same price any day of the week. Problem is that I'd then have to find a mobile router capable of the Clear WiMAX USB adapter, or figure out a way to use the regular WiMAX modem on mobile bband.

Sorry Clear

I wish they would stop sending me mailings about it. I get about one or two a week. Sorry Clear I'm happy enough with my 20 Mbps down 5 Mbps up with Verizon FiOS. Thanks for thinking of me.

Re: The advantage over Sprints Broadband

Don't think they're trying to go against cable. Not with a few billion from the cable companies.

Though if Clear and cable can coordinate their offerings, it'll make things a whole lot less painful for people out of range of cable but within range of WiMAX.

Re: Sorry Clear

It's not likely that Clear is trying to compete with Verizon FiOS. Besides, not everyone in the USA has Verizon or the remote possibility of seeing FiOS in their lifetime, in case you were not aware of that.

Is the "unlimited" tier?

Started Clear tonight

I just started Clear service tonight in a western suburb of Portland. The signal has been alternating between 3 and 4 out of 5 bars on the modem. I signed up for the 3Mbps service and so far, it has been going up on the speed tests but is still not what it is supposed to be. Fios is not currently available in my neighborhood although it is around the corner. Comcast is doubling their speed this month to 12Mbps although I am not sure if it has already happened.

The Clear modem signal actually goes down if I put it by the window (as recommended) and goes up in the middle of the room. It will be interesting to see how reliable the service is as time goes on.

Original Xohm combo deal sounds a ot better...

...for me: $60 for a home AND a mobile connection? Their 2Mbit uplink sounded a lot better to me...

Compared to my ~$50/mo 10Mb+ cable downlink's puny 512k upward bandwidth this WiMax 4-6Mbit down with 2Mbit up is a clear winner for me any day, especially when I'd get a second mobile connection for my nettablet, all inclusive for $60/mo...

...rbing it on, WiMax (Xohm, Clear, anyone), here, here!

Yeah, you gave someone an "oh shit" moment. I hope they're still reading, they need to get rid of it in the TOS as well.
