Verizon would maybe give Cox some competition in Arizona.

Who wants Qwest?

I would think that neither Verizon nor AT&T would want all of Qwest. A lot of Qwest is miles and miles of unpopulated areas leading to a ranch. Really not much of a good business deal. The cities might have some good points, but the majority of Qwest's territory is a real low performer from a business standpoint.

It would be great

While it would be nice if VZ or ATT scooped up Qwest, I don't really see it happening in the near future (2-3 years) because of the current state of the economy. In my opinion, Qwest does not have much to offer to those two anyway. Qwest only has a few large markets to tap into, and the rest of their footprint is fairly rural.

Please, someone buy them out

Someone halfway competent that is willing to deploy some actual competition to Comcast.

Qwest has been touting FTTN in the Twin Cities for the last 6 months are so, but maybe a handful of regions have access to it. So that means at best most areas in MN get the $43 1.5/768 compared to a similarly priced 12/2 blast tier from Comcast.

Re: I Wouldn't Mind...

Cox serves hardly anyone in Arizona. In the Phoenix area alone, they probably reach less than 50% of population. In most of the rural areas, other cable companies serve the population.

Happens every year...

Someone has been pushing a 'Qwest sale/merger' story for 3-4 years now, never happens, can't really see it happening. Qwest DOES make around $600 million a year profit, but has to many issues (FCC, territory, landlines, wireless, management, etc.) for anyone with the kind of money necessary to do a deal, IMHO.

VZ no way.

Verizon just sold off its rural areas and I can't see a real telephone company wanting all of Quest.

The people demanded Ma Bell be dismembered and yet the people bitch.

Hooray!

The re-formation of the old AT&T monopoly is almost complete! Does anyone remember why the government ever broke up this corporation anyway?

Oh please please Verizon buy my local Qwest

I am in a small Qwest town surrounded by Verizon.

I would love to see Verizon buy Qwest and bring FiOS to our area.

Sounds just like AT$T so you wouldn't have anything new with them.

And VZ would take forever to build out the Twin Cities.

If it comes down to AT&T or Verizon I say....

... take the Foreign Country or Company! Then maybe one day we'd get some real competition going....

"Merger" hmmm!!!

I, actually think that AT&T will strike on this one, and buyout Quest Communcations International in full. I think the N.S.A will really benefit from this for homeland security issues, and with AT&T throwing 2 million dollars in every political party members campaign, in Washington D.C. and Kissing A%% with the government. I think the new Democratic FCC Chief whoever Mister, Obama chooses will see this as a great benefit to homeland Security, and the Department of Justice, will have no problem along with the Federal Trade Commission, both of them will have no problems getting this merger approved in a heart beat that is just my opinion. I maybe wrong and I dont know for sure.

It's an FiOS freakout

You folks do realize that Verizon is only deploying FiOS to about half their current customers, right? Were Verizon to serve your area by means of buying Qwest, it doesn't follow that everyone gets FiOS and a free unicorn. Especially if you're in a rural area or small town. Even if they did, it would take years.

Qwest does have a lot of sparcely populated territory, but let's not assume that their entire territory is rural.

Phoenix metro- 4 million
Seattle metro- 3 million
Denver metro- 2.5 million
Minneapolis metro- 3 million
Portland metro- 2 million
Tucson metro- 1 million
Salt Lake City metro- 1 million

Throw in Omaha, Eugene, Yuma, Boise and other mid-sized cities and there's more than a few desireable markets there.

Some rural areas are served by ILECs (some were sold off by Qwest), but add up the population of the 14 states in Qwest's territory and you get 40 million people.

Not years-decades if not centuries with VZ

Re: Who wants Qwest?

Qwest has a good backbone (not that ATT or VZ need that), but they have a considerable long distance business and the bigger cities in the west. Regulators I doubt would approve a sale to ATT, based on anti-competitive issues. So, VZ would seem to be the logical suitor, if they have any cash left in the coffers.
