What

We'll see if this person is more of a real FCC boss instead of some Telco asskisser (or was it cableco?) like Kevin Martin is.

What happened to "change"?

I guess it is too much to ask for an engineer instead of a lawyer.

Yes, just another Washington Insider lawyer at the FCC.

A reputation for being more of a deal maker and an executive than a pure technology expert, a criticism already circulating on Silicon Valley Web sites.

Early in the presidential campaign, Mr. Genachowski urged Mr. Obama to capitalize on the organizing power of the Internet. He was a prolific fund-raiser
So what we may get as the next FCC chair is a political payback for funneling millions of dollars to the winning candidate.

Absolutely. A truly smart engineer would run away from the position as fast as he/she could.

Not to either defend or dis him, since I know nothing about him, but just speaking generally, wouldn't an engineer be less likely to be able to manage all the wheeling and dealing this position seems to entail? As long as this guy knows what he DOESN'T know, and knows where to go to get that information, the choice would be miles ahead of Martin. At least he seems to have a better grasp of the possibilities of the internet - not just the ones the telcos and cablecos tell him exist.

Besides replacing Martin is great CHANGE.

Before anyone says things couldn't get worse at the FCC remember the same thing was said when Michael Powell left and things got worse.

Change, eh? Nah, just more of the same.

Obama is doing precisely what I expected him to do. He's filling all the positions with Clinton henc...er, loyalists.

You don't change things by throwing the same old pigs in the same old chairs. It's a shame the sheeple were so easily misled.

At the end of the day, he's just another politician. And that means lawyers and lobbyists. Meet the new boss, same as the old, folks.

So will it be Cable or Telco who will be getting the special treatment now?

Yes Obama should put in nothing but newbies so all the people who bitched about Obama's lack of experience can bitch about how his whole cabinet is full of newbies. great idea you have.

Who knows where he leans. But here was his past experience at the FCC:
Genachowski came to the Commission in 1994 as Special Counsel to General Counsel William E. Kennard. He became Counsel to Chairman Hundt in March 1995 and Chief Counsel to the Chairman in December 1996.

At the FCC, Genachowki was responsible at various times for mass media, cable, wireless and international issues.

If that was to happen, something would actually get done... we can't have that can we?

Sounds like he will be anti-telco/pro-CLEC/socialism/nationalizing/forfeiture, and will probably be bribed up by cable cos with a face of "supporting competition". I'm not sure if the Telecom Act 1996/what made CLECs, was Clinton's making, or Congress's making.

Uh, no, wise cracker.

What I'm saying is that he should not have appointed Mr. Clinton's cabinet as his own. One failure is enough.

They didn't do the coin toss yet to decide.

Re: Change, eh? Nah, just more of the same.

I don't think so. This guy went to Harvard law with Obama, as have a whole bunch of other appointees. They aren't Clinton cronies, THEY ARE OBAMA CRONIES!

And no, this isn't a gig for an engineer - it's for a wheeler dealer pol - especially now that tings are so diverse.

Anyhow, you need to wait and see what this guy says/does before deciding what his deal is. Generally Obama's IT policy is pretty good.

So relax. Wait a few weeks and see.

Unbundling worked everywhere else it's been tried but here--- because we refused to enforce it then scrapped it.

It wasn't a bad idea. It was just not supported.
