@Level3.net | Also be interesting to know what effect the economic crisis is having. There may be significant numbers of people with cable and satellite who are cutting cable to reduce costs and suddenly scrambling, deciding they might need converter boxes after all.

I can't even watch a Tv show without being constantly reminded about the digital transisition from every channel flashing reminders on the screen during programming. It is extremely annoying. I was ready for the change back in 2001. I just want it to be done with since I'm sick of hearing about it all the time.

They've been told that with this magic box they'll keep receiving TV. They haven't been told that what is a perfectly watchable analog signal is not a good enough signal for this magic box to work. I'm in the situation where I can get a good analog signal, but maybe 1 or 2 digital channels if I'm lucky (they come and go). Also keep in mind that the majority of the population aren't as picky about picture quality as we are - VHS was fine for them, and they don't mind a little show and ghosting.

| Yikes. Why not just send out a letter to ever home and give them information on how to obtain a coupon. I'd be willing to bet that most people who watch TV, don't use rabbit ears anymore. Maybe the government should focus on necessities. -- And if you go, furious angels will bring you back to me. | |

| Govt should know what coupons were not redeemed... They can then reissue those unused coupons (including expired ones). For people who did not get there's yet - well to bad. Our local stations have been running crawlers since the beginning of last year - unless you live under a rock there s no real excuse not to know. But then - if you live under a rock - you probably do not need a converter box.

I have been on dish Network for years I have all of the local channels, that I don't watch, so what do I need a conversion box for. I might set up a TV on a antenna to watch the analog signal go away. -- I am quite sure now that often, very often, in matters concerning religion and politics a man's reasoning powers are not above the monkey's. - Mark Twain in Eruption

I don't think it's a bad idea to have one available if really needed. What if something happens with Dish's uplink between your local stations and them ? In the past, you'd simply dig out an antenna and watch the analog channel(s). In two months, that won't be an option (with an older TV).
In our house, we have (2) TVs and (1) Dish receiver. Their receivers, especially the DVRs, do die. I'm not saying people will "die" without having television, but there's times you may want some channels available, even if it's just the local ones for news.

We have cable TV, but recently our line got knocked down due to an ice storm. TV, landline and internet was down for 3 days. It's a good thing we had that digital converter. Not only would we have gone nuts, we would have also missed important weather bulletins.

I think that (starting in about 2 weeks) all local stations in a given area should get together and, at some agreed upon time, shut down ALL analog signals for a half hour. As Feb 17th gets closer, do this for 1-2 hours on another day. Keep increasing the duration (no more than 2 hrs) and occurrences. (or just broadcast a fixed message explaining things instead of a complete shut-down.) This will get everyone's attention!

1 edit | Re: Govt should know what coupons were not redeemed... I believe a city in NC is all digital or they had a huge test and were the first ones to do said test. May have been an all day test to boot.
Actually - they have been digital since Sept 2008: »https://www.dtv2009.gov/Wilmington.aspx
So tests ARE proceeding in other markets as well...

| US Govt Lame use of money. With all the problems in the economy wtf did the US Government promise to 'pay' households to switch to digital. Hell if you want to own a TV and service changes, I'm sure that those affording a TV can afford a little to transition.
Why spend butt-loads of money that they DON'T have or can even spare so couch potatoes can enjoy themselves without lifting a finger. SERIOUSLY... this country's misuse of funds boggles my mind!
